How to walk in high heels?

I tried insolia for my 4 inch, but it was still hard to walk and I was surprised because I normally wear heels so I thought I would be used to it. Or maybe I just didn't quite stick them right? :shrugs:

I used keel over by the end of an 8 hour day at work, but it's not so bad if I layer one long pad that spans the entire length of the shoe, and then put one more on top of it that is for the ball of the foot

sometimes I wonder if I really do know how to walk in heels or not XD

Platforms make heels more bearable but the truth is that the only thing that really helps is practice. I recommend that instead of going from the proverbial crawling to running, you get used to lower heels first then try to walk in 4 or 5 inch heels. It's nearly impossible to go from flip flops to say Pigalles without serious difficulty. I've been wearing heels for over a decade and I still can't walk in Pigalles!

agree with junehawk

i remember wearing slippers for 2 months straight and there was this party i had to go to and i wore 4.5 inch heels...holy moly...my feet hurt so bad coz i wasnt used to it anymore..so i had to start practicing again

although the sole cushions do help...ive tried the dr scholl's version..i think i should give the insolia a try

i stopped wearing high heels on the street if i had to walk a long way. esp those 4" heels...they are too high to walk in. i can wear 3-inch heels w/out problem. there's this older lady in my office and kept having problem w/ her foot. she said it's due to her high heel walking in her younger days. so i tried not to wear too much high heels these days.

I agree with many of the other posters that I often carry a backup pair of flats to put on if my feet start to hurt. Also it does take a little practice, you need to condition your feet if you will so I would start with a mid-level heel and work your way up.

Honestly, I'm just used to it now. I remember my first heels worn at homecoming (in HS) and i couldn't last even for 1 hour, but now... even if they're 4inch+... they don't really bother me as much (unless i'm walking up a hill-rarely). But i have to agree with lark_lulu that some brands are more comfortable vs. others. For practice i would wear wedges/pumps/sandals that have platforms at the bottom- they're way more easier to work with.

Agree w/ PP's practice ideas. I started with heeled clogs when I was in 7th grade, moved on to MIAs (anyone remember those), then on to wedges and progressively higher heels. I can walk in *anything* now.

Practice is key, and you have to land with your heel first, then the toes to reduce the impact on your knees and ankles. I refuse to give up heels, and most of my heels are 4". I end up alternating high heels with lower heels with flats throughout the week. I wear the high high heels when I know it's just a dinner and movie, and shorter heels for dancing. My chiropractor also told me to massage the patella area after wearing heels to relieve the knees of future pain and injury. Good luck--- heels are fun and I love my Louboutins!

Chunky heels are easier to walk in. And practice, practice, practice! I used to do character dancing and most of my shoes were 1"-2". Nothing like doing Russian folk dancing in 2" heels when you're 9!

I am a tall girl, 5'9" and have never mastered heels. I have spindly little ankles, and my feet are super narrow...size 8.

It is almost like when I wear heels, my ankles can't handle it. I can wear 3" without too much problem, but it must be a very stable heel...not a sexy stilleto or anything fun.

I long to wear a pair of 4" heels, but am completely and rightfully afraid of tripping down stairs and breaking my neck. Even if I can't wear 4"...i'd love to feel comfortable in stilettos...how do i do this???

Tips???

Does the brand of shoes make a difference? If I paid for a pair of Manolos or CL's...would it be easier for me to walk in heels? I am just a klutz in general, but want to look good.

What I did was I started off with 2 - 2.5 inch heels and then went up to 3 inch and then 4 inch. IMO, you can't just jump straight to 4 inches or higher. My advice would be to start off with a stilleto that is shorter (say 2.5 inch or 3 inch) and get used to walking in those before you try anything higher.

I am ALWAYS walking around the house in heels (I know weird). I started this about 6 years ago when I wanted to really wear stilletos. I use to only wear thicker highs because I was afraid to wear others, but I think walking around the house for practice helped me a bunch. Now I wear heels around the house just for fun and I barely leave the house without heels on. Good luck!

I have the same issue, but I started wearing heels at home so my feet would get used to them. I am a fast walker, when i wear heels i always feel like i'm gonna fall, especially when the floor is slippery. I had few attempted falls in the mall last week because i was in a hurry. It was embarrassing, haha.
