How to dodge the "how much did that purse cost" question?

It's a good answer if you want to come off as arrogant and rude.

I usually just ignore the specific question overall, and reply with where I got it; implying they can check the price at the store if they'd like.

Perhaps it does. I do believe tone of voice has a lot to do with how it comes off. I've had people laugh when I say it because I say it with a Thurston Howell kind of tone. It works. But it also depends on who is asking. I don't care for strangers asking me how much I spend on a handbag, it's none of their business and yes I think it's a rude question. So I don't particularly care how I come off when a total stranger asks that question.

My friends are a different story. With them I just answer the question and go on. We all have things we shell out money on. One of my friends is a shoe fiend. I do computers and handbags. Another is into jewelry. So yeah we talk price but usually over coffee at home.

I have three standard answers:

1. Wow. I can't even believe you asked me that.

2. I don't remember.

3. You're so...kind to ask about my finances. If I ever need a loan, you'll be the first person I call.

I've never been asked but I would probably claim that I couldn't remember. What gets me is why anyone would ask that question about any product if they are fully expecting to slag the other person off when they tell them the price. It's alienating and almost equal to insulting the other person to their face, IMO.

LOL, love #3! I don't generally have a lot of women ask me what my bag(s) cost; most just say they like it or whatever. When someone does ask me, I usually say it's a bag I've had for awhile but haven't used much...and I don't recall how much I paid for it.

This question comes up from time to time here and I don't really understand why people are so hesitant to tell people how much it costs. Perhaps they're actually curious and want to know? Perhaps they like it and want to get one for themselves? The price range for bags are so wide that even us whom are well into bags guess totally wrong sometimes.

Many of us ask the same question ourselves, just that we do it here instead. You see someone do a reveal of a beautiful bag and you want to know the price. It's not that different in my opinion.

1. I don't remember

2. I don't dare remember

3. I don't care to remember

4. What this ol' thing? (saved for when I am with someone esp BF)

5. A fan gave it to me, why how much are they? (for the really pushy type)

6. I swapped it for my house (said whist walking past)

7. Don't reply - not everyone speaks English, just smile sweetly and say a few words of Russian to whoever you're with.

8. Shout it's fake and run - saved for some areas

9. Just run - save for the worst neighbourhoods

10. Say 'none of your business' to rude people. Since they are so rude why shouldn't you be back!

If it's a good friend who's asking I'll usually just say "oh around 1K, 2K, 3K" etc depending on which bag it is. If it's someone I don't know very well that says "How much did your bag cost?", I'll just say, "Enough!" and just smile.

If it's a stranger, or even an acquaintance, it might be unsafe to tell them.

If it's a friend, or a coworker, it leads to negative judgments about you for carrying something so expensive.

I've always wanted to do that, Russian language included, haha! :D

I usually go with:

1. Why do you want to know?
2. Don't remember...
3. Got it second hand/ It's vintage...
4. Got it on sale...
5. Was a gift...
6. It's not mine, it's my mother's: ask her...
7. Well, it wasn't cheap...
8. Enough...

I use the "It was a gift" excuse so often - unless it's a fellow fashionista girl - that one of my coworkers said, kinda' snottily, that I must get a lot of gifts. So I said I felt like every day was Christmas or something equally vague.

Nothing wrong with telling someone who honestly wants to know because they might be interested in one as well. But a lot of people are looking to rank you or feel you out or even find reasons to judge - and if you don't know what the reason it, best not to say anything. It's too easy to offend.

I feel that if a person really is interested in buying the same or a similar bag, then they can go online and look up the price instead of being tacky enough to outright ask someone the price.

That is not always so easy as I'm sure a lot of us here know. Not all brands have prices online.
