I've had both offices and cubicles and it all depends...in some places I was able to get the office repainted and cleaned up prior to moving in (old marks and holes from picture hangings plugged up, etc). And...sometimes not.
I have fun with my cubicle decor but I never go OTT. I have a few books, pics, a fun calendar and a few knick knacks but that's about it. If my cube gets too cutesy that detracts my colleagues from my work, KWIM? I want to be known for my work, not for my cube decor!
