How many bags do we really need?

I don't include travel bags or luggage in my count because it seves an entirely different purpose.

Contessa-- how have you been doing on this journey? Have you contemplated any changes or taken any actions? It seems this thread has struck a chord with many people!

I've downsized quite a bit TejasMama. Find I don't really need or want what I once thought I did.

I'm also finding that FUNCTION is HUGE with me. My handbag has to be functional.......especially during the week when I need it most. I've gotten SO used to outer zippered compartments, hidden inner ones.......a slot for my iPhone......key strap.......outer pocket to find essentials in a pinch.........for everyday, my handbag MUST have outer pockets or it's a no-go.

Weekends or evenings, I might find myself grabbing for a clutch, but it's not a given....although my LV Lexington Fleur is begging for an excuse to party! ;)

So glad to hear that it's going well! I know I felt a lot lighter after selling some bags that were lovely-- but as you pointed out-- not functional. I agree on the outside pocket as an absolute must.

I am realizing how little patience I have for fussy bags. Just can't do it. Give me great lines, lovely leather and comfort any day of the week.

Now that I've sold a few bags/accessories recently, I'm contemplating buying a non-leather bag like the longchamp pliage! :graucho: I'm going to research them on tpf first though!

I think I could live with one brown, one black, and one light colored bag. Plus a black and a light colored clutch. I have a lot of bags, but have noticed I really only use a black one in the winter and a brown one in the summer. I just can't seem to part with the ones I don't use because I love them so much!

So based on the responses given here, what motivates us to buy more, more MORE???!!!

You're too funny! Your question was "How many bags does a woman NEED?" The key word: "need"!

The answer to your second question is "WANT"!!! We don't need more than a couple of bags but want is a whole other story! :p

True.

Then it's all about the "want"...........and that could be limitless!

Question answered!

Interesting thread.

Of course it depends on your lifestyle, what you do for a living, etc.

It really got me thinking though, how many bags do we need, how many should we feel comfortable with.

I think these are the bags an average woman may need (in the natural colour that fits all of her outfits, for most people this would be grey/taupe, brown, or black):
- Small bag
- Medium bag
- Large bag

But these would be really limited. So I would say:
- shoulder bag (that can also extend to a cross body)
- hobo
- satchel with a cross body strap
- tote
- office bag
- Maybe a larger office bag for your laptop, more files than usually, etc, but this really depends on what you do
- evening bag/ clutch (this could be the shoulder bag mentioned above, really depends on your lifestyle)
- large weekender/ gym bag
- fun pop of colour bag
- one or two really cheap bag for clubbing, or going to places where a nice bag could get damaged/stolen/lost/ judged with consequences (it seems slightly unreasonable to help out at a homeless shelter while carrying a Birkin)
- one chic yet very lightweight bag for shopping/ walks

Considering one could like to have multiple of each, I would say… 12-15 bags.

This seems reasonable to me.
