How many bags do we really need?

Yes, true. It gets a little dangerous. I've gone through throwing everything/selling everything spurts and then I've been pretty unhappy with myself for dumping things I really loved. Throwing stuff out can get frighteningly invigorating and then before you know it, you're sitting on a crate in the living room and your husband is saying "But I kind of liked our sofa"...

Just a warning...be sure before you start dumping.

Yes, this is good advice! I've been on a bit of a tear as of late, selling several bags including a couple I thought I'd originally keep. I don't regret it, but I have decided to stop and take a breath because I'm getting down to the ones I love the most and am trying to remind myself that I can have more than 2 bags! I get like this with spring cleaning--I get started and before long, the dog is looking at me with suspicion, praying I don't tote him off to Goodwill as well!:D

Tejas, what did you sell and why? I never used to be a bag person but once I got into it, I started to buy things that I thought looked nice and that were not going to bankrupt me overnight. I never really thought about how I carried bags, what my preferences were etc.

It has now finally sunk in that I like mid sized bags on me although when I look at bags I am drawn to big bags even though they just don't look right on me.

I am not really a hand held or crook of the elbow girl, so if a style can only be carried that way, then it probably isn't really for me. Now I just need to keep that in mind before parting with my cash!

This is a great thread....

I have sold all of my bags except 2...it was half forced because I have a shoulder issue and the shoulder bags made it worse....and once I decided to part with a few...I realized that the most comfortable and suited to me were the 2...so I let go of the rest...and it was the right thing to do...

If you are truely using all of the bags and enjoy your collection, meaning using them often...its just right..but if you have some just sitting there or your keeping it for the sake of just having it...its time to purge it out!!! The right number will come to you!!!!

I don't think it's a 'need' thing with bags, nor do I think that there is any particular cut-off after which the number of bags can be deemed 'excessive'. It differs from person to person according to taste and lifestyle.

Personally, as long as everything I have gets plenty of use, then I don't find it excessive. I would feel bad if I had a bag that didn't get used - that would be wasteful to me. Fortunately, I've refined my consumer behaviour over enough years to have it down to a reasonable form - I'm not buying anything that isn't getting great use.

I like this.

I've also come to realize (and embrace) that my bag assortment is not static. I definitely don't go for trends and I have a small collection, but I do outgrow my old favorites and replace them with new ones. I definitely have bags that I don't use very often but I'm not ready to give them up because I kind of like having them around, as well as the option to use them. When I've 'lost that lovin' feeling' for a bag I know it's time to pass it along.

That is a charged question but a good one..

Need - One and if the quality is good it will last a long time

Want - now that is the question - Personal I do not know I am upto over 70 and still looking I want to reduce my amount but love them all.. & SO want is the real issues and question...

Tejas, what did you sell and why? QUOTE]

Hi Van,

I sold an RM Black Basketweave Morning after Bag (larger one) and it was TOUGH because that bag is stinkin' gorgeous but it always looked like luggage on me...it was just too big, and I often chose other bags when needing to carry more (due to ongoing back pain issues, etc). This thread really helped me in my decision and I felt a little twinge of pain because I loved it but it wasn't being used. I know it was the right choice for me because I always felt guilty whenever I saw it tucked away in its dust bag. Now someone else has it and is thrilled. It was a win/win.

This is a very good point. Our preferences will change over time, so there will be times when selling off bags and replacing make perfect sense based upon where we are in life. That said, I know I got in a pattern of buy/sell because I wasn't thinking things through well or I couldn't try a bag on in person and then realized afterward that it wasn't a fit. It's just a matter of knowing the difference between the two situations, and for me, that took a bit of work.:D

I don't include travel bags or luggage in my count because it seves an entirely different purpose.

Contessa-- how have you been doing on this journey? Have you contemplated any changes or taken any actions? It seems this thread has struck a chord with many people!

I totally agree. Of course we only NEED one! But as most of the purse lovers on here would readily admit, we love bags! Therefore we add to our collection on a regular basis.
I mean, I could ask my husband, "how many TVs do we need?" or "how many cars do we need?" The answer to both of those questions is one. But because owning multiples of luxury items will always bring us joy, we'll continue to buy them.

2 colors and styles of clutches, handles, shoulders and one luggage so its... 7!!! AND THATS THE END!

oh my... dont think am I crazy!

I dont understand when someone has for example 10 speedies or 5 the same style purses in the same one color! yes each one in blue- lighter and darker...
