I got a Cape Cod watch (barenia strap) about 7 months ago!

Some comments and questions:
1. The watch constantly runs 1-3 minutes slow! Has this happened to anyone else? Every couple of weeks it falls two minutes behind and I have to adjust the time. It's not a dealbreaker for me but for the prices you pay for these watches, having it tell the time accurately is not an unreasonable expectation, no?

2. I also bought another strap in jaune de naples. It will be perfect for summer! I love yellow and fell in love with the stock picture:

Sadly, when I asked the SA to show me how to change the strap, she told me I have to come in to the store and have them do it for me??? She said they have to use a special tool (I saw it, is just a small metal thing) to change over the buckle. What a scam - if I buy interchangeable straps, I should be able to change them as often as I want, twice a day if I want, without having to trek to the store every time, no???

3. The barenia strap has aged A LOT in seven months. I knew barenia would patina but mine has become darker very unevenly. I'll post more about this in the barenia clubhouse thread.

Now, all that said, I LOVE the watch and am very happy I bought it. It's classic and elegant yet modern, it goes with everything and I constantly get compliments on it.

Love your watch!

I have had mine for 10 years now and still love it and receive compliments on it all the time.

The tool should only be needed if they have to change or move the clasp from one strap to another. The newer straps have the little click mechanism that allows you to change straps easily. I had my SA change to full metal strap and then to my new croc strap in front of me and no tool needed for just changing the strap. It’s a little fiddly but not difficult. I struggle as have long nails…

Thank you for your reply! I do need to move the buckle from one strap to the other, the yellow strap i bought is just the leather without any metal parts. So I guess the tool is necessary?

Yes the tool is necessary. It’s called a jewelers bench knife, costs no more than a few bucks and is easily found online, it’s basically a blunt knife.
You should ask your SA to show you how to use it on the buckle. It’s really easy, but you just need to know how. I change my straps all the time and it takes less than a minute.
Alternative is to buy straps where the buckle is included (like online, they are included), but of course you pay extra.
Jumping to the conclusion it is a scam is a bit much no?

Also, never had my watch run slow (have owned it for five years now), would take it to the store to be checked over.

Thanks for the inputs Angelian, this is so helpful! I just searched for a jewelers bench knife online and indeed found one for 9 bucks!
Scam was maybe indeed not the right word to use, more annoyance... I just checked and the difference between the strap I bought in the store (without buckle) and the strap sold online with buckle is the equivalent of 110 USD in my country. Obviously in Hermes-land 110 USD is not a lot of money. But it annoys me that they push you to pay that extra amount to buy the strap with buckle - or else you have to come in to the store to change the strap because they don't sell the tool to switch the buckle between straps. In any case I could not have bought a strap with buckle because the color I wanted was no longer available online. The store ordered my color and it came without buckle. And they don't sell just the buckle by itself, even though they sell just the strap by itself. (Why?) I would have been willing to buy a second buckle to attach to my yellow strap but it's not even possible.
Anyway, it's not so important, mostly me venting about first world problems. I will get a jewelers knife and learn to do it  Thank you again for this useful tip!

Not sure which country you are in but I was able to order just the buckle for a second strap I wanted for my watch. I had special ordered the second strap and when it came in I asked if I could get a second buckle for it. They didn’t have one in the metal I wanted so they ordered the buckle for me and put it on the second strap when the buckle came in. I’m in the U.S.

Thank you for the feedback! I'm in Europe, the SA said it was not possible to order just the buckle.

I’m interested in a double tour strap in alligator framboise for my Cape Cod, but it’s only available in the longer length. When I tried on the longer length, it was at the smallest hole, and the SA thought it was still too loose. Should I buy it anyway and get additional holes punched, or will the extra strap length look odd?

Hello, I buy the shorter length double tour straps for my PM Cape Cod. I could tell that I'd be unhappy with the look of the excess length of strap. Trying to remember, but I think I was going to need at least one extra hole, possibly two, in the regular length straps. For reference my wrist measures 5 3/4" - 14.5cm. The shorter length straps don't seem to be as readily available, but can be ordered. Hope that helps!

I'm in the US. I've bought an extra buckle each time I've bought a strap. I don't want to be fiddling with swapping buckles each time I want to wear a different strap. My store doesn't tend to have these in stock, and they need to order them. I'm wondering if they will only sell a buckle along with a strap purchase (just like the belt kits). Maybe remind them that you just bought the yellow strap, and had they told you, you'd have ordered the buckle at the same time! Seems like possibly a silly interpretation of the rules? Gosh, having to plead to buy a buckle! Best wishes!

Thank you, that’s very helpful! The SA did mention that the longer length is the more standard, common one. She didn’t offer to place an order. Is that a custom order?

Hello! I'd ask your SA to do a search for the strap combo you are wanting (leather/color/length). The short double-tour length for my PM size is (at least previously) a regular offering, so not a "custom" order. But, 2 of my straps are Barenia (natural and black) and at the time they were out of stock and had to be ordered. My other strap is white Epsom and was readily available. Best wishes!

I have 2 cape cod watches, An automatic and a quartz one-
The Quartz keeps perfect time, The Automatic probably loses about 3 miniutes a month.
That said I've never had it serviced and owned it about 8 years or so.
They're fantastic watches however and much more reliable for timekeeping than my Rolex (which I have had serviced!)
