Hermes store purchase vs. new from reseller

TPF may earn a commission from merchant affiliate
links, including eBay, Amazon, and others

I have no experience with this but I think $2,000-$3,000 (for new togo or similar- more for croc but maybe less for pre-owned) is a reasonable markuup for these reasons:

1. generally not paying sales tx to reseller, who may have had to pay sales tax when purchasing- this adds about $500-$700 to purchase price

2. both supplier of bag and reseller each have to make a proft- and for reseller there is the cash outlay and risk of laying out the $$ and having to wait several weeks or months or longer until the bag sells.

3. supply and demand- resellers are selling products which it is difficult to get in the marketplace and therefore are entitled to a premium for providing hard to get goods.

I agree with taxvixen. 2K to 3K is probably considered reasonable. See, with the sales tax, that typically adds $500 to $1000 onto the bag already. Then the seller has to pay the bag finder a fee, which I'm assuming is probably $500 to 1K (or even more if it's a hard to find bag), then the cost associated with selling (listing on eBay - the FVF will kill, PP fee - if they're nice enough to take credit card).

I don't think I can ever be the reseller. Just the stressing over whether my bag will sell and having to make sure that all the incoming bags are authentic as well as dealing with scamming buyers are enough to make me lose sleep.

Hi I live in Washington State too. Could you recommend a reseller for me? I an dying to buy a birkin bag. Thanks!

luxe, view the recommended ebay sellers on the Hermes Shopping subforum, there's a list there.... if you want to go to a real store in WA, hmm the consignment stores are a good option but when I went to one of them, they didn't really have much... I saw a black picotin (found out the name after I ventured into the hermes subforum.. hehe)... it's the one in downtown seattle, alexandra's is the name of the store.. maybe lefrock may have it too...

Bluxcape,
Thank you!!!

Yeah, pretty much - which makes it hard for me since I don't really want anything other than Birkins and Kellys, and I also don't live anywhere near an H store!!

If you're not as fussy about color/leather as I am, you can sometimes buy one just by walking in when you're travelling. Since I started looking for a Birkin 2 months ago, DH has been to Chicago and was offered one (and there was a Kelly as well), and my boss was recently offered 2 in Paris without buying anything. Unfortunately, none were the colors I wanted.

If you really want one and aren't fussy, definitely try your luck when travelling.

I have purchased bags both ways. The store can be a little intimidating to me. I always seem to feel presured to buy more things . The reseller allows me to get what I want more than what they have in stock. It has been easier for me to find things that way. I had to wait a while for my birkin but it was worth the wait.

Which reseller would you recomend?

Hi I'm sorry this is my first time using this... I was offered a constance for 10100 usd. It's brand new. But I've never bought a bag from a reseller before so I'm a bit worried ... Can anybody help me and see if that's an okay price?? Thank you!!!

It's a 23/24 cm one I think...

Thanks so much

Wonder if I am the loner thinking as production ramps up as it seems to be doing of late, then the availability of purses in the stores will increasel. My basis for this line of thinking is my SO arrived in less than 3 months. The previous arrival was 6 months and before that a year or more. Production has definitely ramped up, and whether it is solely for SOs is a wait and see thing.

As for paying $2K to $3K more for a purse than in boutique, I can't bring myself to go there. If it is less than retail but not new, I have done that before with no regrets. I live in a state where I don't have to pay sales tax, so another save money element and not just for Hermes.

I'm about saving money. I'd rather take that $2K to $3K and buy stocks. (To each their own, no wrong, no right; just is.)

I bought my last bag from a reseller slightly above retail since I am 99% sure that my local store would never had gotten this bag in stock. It seems like most of their clients like big bags (K and B 35), which is what they get the most, but I am trying to add a couple of smaller bags to round out my collection. Also, if they get smaller bags they are often in the latest pop color, but I am looking for neutral/classic colors. :nogood:

I don't mind paying a bit more for a new bag if I can get the size, color, and leather combination I want. I also don't mind the bag being pre-owned if it's in good condition and sold below retail. Otherwise, I am at the mercy of whatever my store gets (I have not been offered an SO).

Bumping an old thread..
Just wondering - for those who have a good relationship with your H boutique and can get B/K twice year from your SA, do you ever buy bags from resellers just because you really want a particular combo and don't want to wait? And if so, do you ever feel that these bags are less "special" than those you purchased directly from your sA at the H boutique?
