Thank you for taking time out to answer marietouchet and Seton!

I know I've searched for info on when the 45cm mousses stopped being made, but it was yet another thing I came up with nada.

re: mous 45cm

They stopped production in mid 2000s.
2003 was the last time I actually bought one in store. It was La Rosee.

I got the Festival des couleurs in summer 2009. But it was a special edition, so maybe the rules didn't apply? (and even then, 80€ for a gavroche seemed like a pretty good price!)

I am still pretty sure H was not offering mous 45s regularly in 2009.
2009 was the last yr H offered 90cm mous I think and they stopped offering 45s before that time.

So, yes, it was really a special edition ;)
Just a definition. We were talking of mousse 45s in general ...

(I dont know about the Festival gavroche...)

The term special issue usually (there are no absolutes at Hermes) refers to a scarf with a commemorative inscription issue for some special occaision (or order) eg boutique opening. Think of the 140cm mousse for Beverly Hills for example.

Most mousse 45s, in general, are not commemorative in nature so IMHO they qualify as rare/HTF issues, not special issues

Also the fabric used for mousses has changed over the years, there have been fabrics like crepe de chine, very thin twill, cheeseclothy silk/cotton bland - and these are often called mousses

But that is MY definition of special issue

My definition of a special edition would be: something that came with a card explaining what it is made for ;)

Although I consider my Beverly Hills to be a special edition, even though there was no card included.

(sorry about the upside down picture)

Hmm yes, yet another definition of a SI - one that has a card ... a perfectly valid definition ... And furthermore if a scarf is special to YOU, then it is a SPECIAL ISSUE

I do make the following observations about the cards - most SIs lack them, eg the Beverly Hills mosaic palm trees - was shipped without cards - cards may have existed, but none were sent to me when I opened the box . It is like the booklets, they often run out

And it is easy to separate the card and scarf, and, 20 years from now, it may be difficult to prove which card corresponded to which silk

Ps on the ombre mousse - for lack of a better title , I remember it now .. I borrowed your photo and righted it so I could read it

The card says it was issued in conjunction with the Festival of Color. Gosh I wish the card stated what year .. The scarf benefitted Unicef schools in Casamanca - not sure where that is .

So, the ombre mousse was likely sold in places other than Beverly Hills

Hermes used to designate the proceeds from one scarf a year for charity. Offrances d un Jour & Monde est Vaste were two of those - neither had inscriptions, I dont remember if all cws benefitted charity or just one . There was no difference on the silk to indicate which cw miight have been designated for donation.

There may have been cards, there certainly were special internet notices eg on www, hermes about the dontations.

I know exactly when: I found it on the French website, in the category "Surprise", in Spring 2009, when I was looking for my birthday gift (in July). I was living in France then ;)

Casamance is a region of Senegal, in Africa.

The other special edition I have is the Air France Cosmos, and it also has a card stating that the scarf cannot be returned or exchanged.
My "oldest" scarves, around 1995-2000, all came with a card stating that they could be exchanged.

Maybe this exchange policy is the reason for the card. I heard the policy has changed (I don't buy enough scarves to know about that)

Cards ...
There was one variant - 20 years ago ? It said Hermes would be pleased to exchange the scarf . They no longer do «easy» exchanges (no questions asked) any more and those cards were with most (if not all) 90cm sold, nothing special there. Yes, the exchange policy was the reason for those cards.

Fete de la couleur ca 2009
Found a tiny bit on that. The article alludes to a Unicef promotion ca 2008, but also one for AIDS

This one says there was a party at 24 Fbg in Nov 2009

To add to the confusion... Hermes did other ombre / clock block scarves around time (Albers, Sugimoto) - massively different from the screened 90cm designs but those look a lot like the ombre gavroche ...

I can see Hermes promoting the Albers/ Sugimoto / AIDS/ Unicef stuff all together - a similar artistic spirit. They used to do promotions - pop up stores / exhibitions that would move from town to town for about a year.

The pitfalls of dating scarves
-----
Finally a good example

Curious example of a special issue sold on the site.

The blurb on the website says : Hermes a Beverly Hills Hermes silk twill scarf, hand rolled, 36" x 36". Original design created especially for the reopening of the Beverly Hills store in September 2013. Limited edition.

The design was 1rst avail in 2013 but it is still on the web site almost two years later, so 20 years from now, people will say (and correctly I might add) «I bought the scarf in 2013, 2014, 2015». Dating a silk to a SINGLE year is perilous.

There is a title on the silk - very hard to see - bottom center - but no date on the silk. This was probably done deliberately so that it could be sold over a multi year period.

And the bit about being a limited edition... Arent they all ???

IMHO anything for sale on the web site must have been produced in LARGER quantities. This is the business person speaking here. There is overhead in putting something on the web - the labor for the webmaster & photographer. It makes no sense to incur the overhead if there is only a quantity of 5 (LOL) to sell.

I dont know how many of these BH 90s were done. A run of 100 used to be quoted for special issues, but that number makes no sense. I would bet at least 5000 were produced based on what I know about manufacturing

It was officially launched on 20/11/08 - I have some press clippings with the full explanation if anyone is interested. I think I may have posted info when the special edition thread launched.

Thank you all for all the extra information! (I've been quietly following along!)

As a side question to releases and interesting additions, I've recently seen a few dip dye twillies show up on eBay (stuff seems to crop up in multiples one after the other there). Does anyone have any information about these they might share?
