Hello marietouchet, forgive the digression....do you know of any scarves with a German shepherd dog or something similar. Any color GS...Tri color, whit, black...THANK YOU

I cannot recall any German shepherds & that does not surprise me because

1. Almost all the dogs on HS are hunting dogs & the GS is not a hunter it is a working dog, if memory serves. Ev en a Doxie - done by Poret - is a hunter (terrier)

2.The French version of a GS is an Alsatian - from the northeast of France - the area that was part of Germany ca 1870 - 1920. So, all in all, a GS is a very German dog, not French.

If you think about there are like almost no German themed scarves, Austrian - yes a couple, but German I come up with one that is arguably German

So I cam up with a blank on GS scarves

Sans Soucy (Voltaire) is a German themed scarf either.

Acttually I was thinking of that one when I said there are almost no German themed scarves ... but is it a German themed scarf ?

The title according to Hermes is Voltaire - not Sans Souci, even though the words Sans Souci take up more of the silk than the tiny signature of Voltaire. And just a small portion of the silk shows the writer - center and corner bottom vignettes. So, Hermes chose to emphasize the Frenchness of the design by its choice of title. Certainly the design is about Voltaire in Germany, not about his life general.

But, the vast portion of the silk shows the palace of Sans Souci - Potsdam, Frederick II of Prussia and various monuments to Frederick in Berlin. So, the actual design shows more German monuments/buildings/palaces etc than items about Voltaire.

So, yes, the silk is German themed, but, I have never quite understood why Hermes chose Voltaire as the title, that is not what the design is about.

Marietouchet, I completely agree. I do not understand why they named it "Voltaire". Well, at least "Sans Soucy" is French, too. Sounds so much better than "sorgenfrei". It is a lovely scarf, I own it in the pink colorway. BTW, the castle is lovely and Potsdam is really beautiful.

My Voltaire is in the green and peach . Btw I think the Voltaire vignettes in the corners are a bit silly , they make light of the great philosopher - he is kicked by a horse in the one . I guess they were picked either for the horse theme in each or because the originals or copies are at the palace . I do love this design because of the depth of the design , there are all sorts of items to chat about , Berlin and Potsdam are on my list of places to visit

While I was at it, I uploaded the photo of mine, I do like green .. I may be the only person in the word to do so LOL

Another bit of Voltaire trivia:

The palace name is written Sanssoucy on the silk - kind of an antiquated French spelling, but kinda wrong - it should be 2 words, even in French of the 1700s. No French person would use THAT spelling by mistake. Somebody used that weird spelling on purpose

The actual building is titled Sans Souci - engraved on the facade - - ahhh! the correct French spelling

So, I have always wondered why they had the weird spelling on the silk , it is as if Hermes were trying deliberately to distance themselves from the building/palace, and downplay the German-ness of the design

So sorry, I haven't been able to check TPF in awhile marietouchet! I so appreciate your reply and info. I knew it was a VERY long shot. But, I knew if there was a GS scarf you would know of it.

I was hoping Hermes made one exception for a working dog;(. DH and my first dog was a white Alsatian from Europe. And, I would love to combine two of my loves....my dogs and Hermes;)

Thanks again! XO

Do you have a mystery Hermes scarf that needs to be identified?
Need to know the date of your Hermes scarf?
Is something bothering you about a scarf that you own that you want answered?

Dear Seton,

Thank you once again for your feedback on the first issue of Astrologie =) I am again in huge need of your expertise on "Astrologie". I have been trying to make a classification of Astrologie attributes in 50 years, but the math just doesn't add up =( Sorry for my chaotic thoughts I hope I make sense.

So according to different databases (I also used your website for references) there are the following re-issues of Astrologie

- 1963 - first issue, no copyright, author's signature under the rim
- 1970s (Hermesology) - vintage copyright (next to Hermes Paris), vintage tag (the short one with 100% soie), author's signature under the rim
- 1980 (Luxury Scarves, Hermesology) - vintage copyright, folded long tag, author's signature below the rim.
- 1986/87 (Luxury Scarves) - vintage copyright, folded long tag (?), authors signature under the rim
- 1988 (Carrés d'Art, (Luxury Scarves, Hermesology) - vintage copyright, long tag, authors signature under the rim
- 1989/90 (catalogue) - vintage copyright, long tag, authors signature under the rim
- 1999 (Luxury Scarves, Hermesology) - modern copyright, long tag, authors signature under the rim, the appearance of silver zodiac signs (?)
- 2003 (Luxury Scarves, Hermesology) - modern copyright, modern tag, authors signature under the rim, the appearance of silver zodiac signs
- 2005 (Carrés d'Art) - modern copyright, modern tag, authors signature on the rim, no shadows of the zodiac signs (?)
- 2008 (scarf booklet) - modern copyright, modern tag, authors signature on the rim, the appearance of the green zodiac signs.

My biggest question I guess in the 1988 re-issue, the one that everyone agrees on. I know there is the 1988 booklet (the one with a satchel made of Les Plumes on the cover) that also features Astrologie, but I know this sounds very silly, I sometimes have a feeling that that catalogue is kind of a preview for the future collections. I guess my biggest hint is that it features Les Plumes which is said to be reissued only a year later. I realize that that sounds stupid, there could have been a re-issue of course in 89/90, but that thought crossed my mind =))) And thank you sooo much for your help!
