Hi everyone
Bit of an Hermes newbies here
I am thinking of buying my first H bag - a black b25 in VGL (veau grain lisse, similar to Epsom but less shiny) in Japan for my 30th birthday / honeymoon.
Long story short - its handles and clochette probably need to be completely replaced due to wear and cracks / splitting. I know Hermes has a great bag policy (bag is in original condition thankfully) but would they accept a bag for spa as VGL leather is discontinued ?

I am nervous to invest so much in a bag that can get the work it needs done. Hoping someone out there is an Hermes expert and can give a newbie some insight. Thanks all!

More likely than not the leathers for the handle & clochette that need to be redone would
not exactly match the body of the rest of the bag in spite of it being black JMO
Since that particular leather is discontinued, perhaps someone else that has more experience
with leathers than I do, can share a thought or two
I had a bag handle replaced on an exotic bag & Claude ( Hermes Maison)told me the color would
not be an exact match) but went ahead with it anyway
Not knowing what the cost of the bag that you considering is, spa repairs are not inexpensive, JMO

Good point , ty
If the black is brand new maybe it won’t match as much

Would they even be able to do it though you think ? Since the leather is discontinued they may not even have it in stock anymore sadly

Hermes spa is known to work miracles on bags, but if you are that positive that this leather is
discontinued, there is a fair amount of risk both for getting a close match to the leather
as well as the cost involved.
Hopefully someone who has leather experience will chime in..Your call as to what will work for you

Did your bag end up looking good even though it was not an exact match with the new leather?

Yes it did.. Claude was wonderful at Hermes when he was there. The skins were ordered from
Paris, he made a new handle, I understood that the color would not be 100% perfect match,
but it was more than acceptable & was pleased that I made the decision to have the handle replaced.
I still use this bag to this day & despite that it is a vintage 35 Kelly that shows wear & tear, the patina
is wonderful, IMO, would not trade it for the world, in manner of speaking

That is great to hear; and what a gift to work with a true craftsman

I would not do this. There is no guarantee and another TPFer recently had handles done which were not a match. And that was not a discontinued or complicated leather. I would run a search on the spa thread

Hermès keeps stocks of discontinued leathers for these repairs, and will tell you if there is no stock to match your bag. However there is no guarantee that you will get a perfect match, and as @880 noted there is a rather alarming story in the spa thread which, if accurate (and there are photos), would honestly scare me from getting any difficult handle replacement done on any bag.

Given that you are looking at a fairly uncommon leather, and that you will not see your bag for several months if this repair can even be done, personally I would reconsider this investment unless the price is just staggeringly low. There are many, many amazing vintage Hermès bags findable in Japan, it is a bit of a playground for collectors, perhaps look around some more :flowers:

I dropped off my bag at the Madison Ave store in the beginning of June, with an estimated complete date in October. When I asked for an update, they told me that basic cleanings didn't get status updates, and I would only be notified when the job was done.
Got an email this morning letting me know that my bag was ready for pickup. This is in-line with the original time estimate of 10/25.

Has anyone had an Hermes bag with threads missing? I purchased a pre loved elan and noticed it has no threads about 1/4th of the way down… just holes from the needle. The previous owner says they sent it to the H spa but would they really send back a bag like that!? I’m wondering if I can send it back to the spa and have them add threads?

If you look closely you can see they’re just empty holes, the white leather between each hole makes it look like a thread..

You need to look really closely as the white leather between the holes looks like thread but they’re just empty holes.

Has anyone had luck having threads redone?
Why would a style this new be sent to the spa already? There’s no way I would keep this bag. Send it back to the reseller and ask your SA for one. With your purchase history it should be an easy request.
