thanks a lot for the precaution - I just got a kelly wallet in epson and will be very careful...

While epsom is supposed to be very durable please do be careful about not getting it wet. My lovely kelly wallet blistered when condensation from a closed water bottle leaked on it. It is ruined and can't be repaired because of the embossed nature of epsom.
One of the (several) reasons I will never accept a bag in this leather.

my clemence birkin was once caught in the rain. i tried my best to protect it and wiped off rain immediately. the leather is OK but the glue on the handle is open on the 2 top spots. so i will avoid the rain when i use clemence.
also, my chevre mysore kelly was once caught in the rain and the color on the spot darkened. i immediately wiped off the rain and let it dry and the color went back to normal.
from what i experience, epsom performs much better in the situation of rain/water and food spill.

Thanks for the advice. I'll definitely be more careful, I just worry that I'll be caught in the rain unexpectedly and the leather will be ruin. It's glad to know that clemence is not so vulnerable and a quick wipe dry will prevent permanent damage

Good point the leathers might survive a good soaking but it's doubtful that glue and liner will come though a soaking quite so well.

I'm fan of Clemence but prefer it unlined as in an evie.

My little ostrich Berlingot was soaked recently and the ostrich, except for one feather hole, please help me with the technical name for the bump someone if you know, came through beautifully. However there is a subtle but distinct difference at the top where the edging, zipper and cheve lining are attached.

they're called quill follicles. :smile1:

Haha! Thank you so much fineprint. Greatly appreciated, was racking my brain this morning trying to come up with just the right word. We might have used a Gaelic or slang word plucking chickens.

Here is a pic you can make out the little floppy tube. I have no doubt H will do a great job repairing this waiting until the corners have a bit more wear.

so other leathers, given the same situation, can be repaired? i just want to clarify before choosing my next bag. i actually did not check about rain and stuff (as i always carry an umbrella)...but i guess you never know.

thanks!! and thanks everyone for the wealth of info :)

It's not an issue with togo or clemence.
Box leather...WILL blister. Never get it wet.
Epsom, because it is pressed/embossed leather, if it gets wet can yield a weird raised area where the leather expands due to the water and will never go back to normal. It is difficult to explain unless you see it. Just be careful.

my boxcalf bags have been soaked in rain many times - they survived without any damage. i do polish them at least once a year...with ice water!

also never had problems with epsom togo clemence swift evercolour in rain...i don't put anything to protect these bags or wallets

my leather bracelets and watch straps in tadelakt and crocodile all survived intact with water. no damage or water drops. i wash my hands quite frequently and i never take them off..

Ditto on box leather, they can survive the rain if the leather was treated.

Interesting point about Epsom, mine has gotten wet and I didn't relate it to the leather expansion.

I had a black box leather 35 kelly that got wet and blistered beyond belief. I blotted the blisters with a towel and then held a hand dryer to them to try to get them to completely dry, which they did not. It took a week for the leather to lay flat again but there were very slight shadows where it had blistered. I told Claude this story and he had never heard of this method and was amazed when I showed him the bag.

I personally would never use box leather in the rain.

I think epsom is more durable than people think... Mine went through a huge snowstorm while I was running around. After wiping it dry, i didn't really notice anything change with the leather.. that said, i'm not encouraging anyone to put their bags through this :D

I used the same technique!!
One year I got caught in the rain on Christmas Eve with my chocolate box Kelly. When I got home and saw the blisters I nearly fainted.
It's been 8 years now and you really can't see the damage ( thank goodness).

Hello ladies, I need to know if anyone owns Clemence and have you had any problem with the rain or water? I just got a Birkin in Clemence and I heard that this type of leather will become blister when it touch the water. I only have Togo and Epsom and never have Clemence before.

Also I normally clean my bag with baby wipe. Can I use this with Clemence?

Thank you for your help.

Sorry ladies. I just found the info about the rain. It seems to be ok with rain if I immediately wipe it out.

Now only question about baby wipe. I normally use with togo because of the color stain of my clothes and they are gone. Because Clemence is not advisable with the water so I wonder if baby wipe will affect to the leather? [emoji848]
