Were you flying domestic? I’m just curious as I’ll be going to SFO in Jan but flying domestic - Delta. So I’m not sure if I could (a) access the international terminal to shop at H, ans (b) allowed to make purchase at the store since I’m not flying international. I mean, I don’t mind paying the taxes!
I believe you won’t be able to since the Hermes in SFO belongs to a duty free group. They scan passport and boarding pass for every purchase. The goods are going to picked up at your gate, not given to you in person. You can try and ask them but to my understanding, you must fly international to shop.
Yeah they are super strict on this. I tried to access the DUFREE store at JFK, but they wouldn't even let me in the terminal because a) I wasn't flying an international airline; and b) they said it was my return trip home & not a trip out of the country. :sad: :mad:

@SHFBudget ,
Agree with @anonymousbirkin and above. All duty free goods are sold to travelers who will take them out of the country of purchase. They are exempt from local taxes bc they are not intended for domestic customers. Duty free is a Misnomer in the sense that they are presumed to be taxed at the rate of the travelers home country. I read somewhere that within the EU, some duty free goods might be sold to EU residents with applicable taxes, but I am not sure.
(The same applies for VAT refund. You have to hold a foreign passport AND be taking the goods out of the country to qualify; that’s why they check boarding passes and tickets at detax)

I was in Kansai Airport (Osaka) a week ago & the boutique had virtually nothing. Didn't ask about bags but they had only 70 scarfs & no horn jewelry. Seriously, JMO, I don't know why Hermes even bothered to lease the space since their offerings were so pitiful.

You pay duty when you return to the US, assuming you spend over the exemption.

Duty free refers to VAT charged in the country where the item is purchased. You're still obligated to pay US import duty if applicable.

here's the thread with all of the info:

Went through GVA last week. They had some silks, some shoes (no Chypre), no bags. SA said stock is starting to improve though.

Also went to LHR T3 - since its no longer duty free I didn't shop extensively. No Chypre there either. I did buy a CDC that I've had a hard time finding anywhere else.
