It sounds like you have healthy shopping habits. As long as you aren’t spending beyond what you can afford then I wouldn’t consider it an issue.I searched out this topic, as sometimes I feel I also have a problem with purchasing bags. I used to use one bag - have my favourite and use it until it needed to retire, and then buy the next one and use it exclusively. Something happened! I’m not sure what. I think I started to appreciate bags - the leather, the design, the structure and the function of them. I started to buy more bags, that had a different function, a different configuration. I found contemporary designs and thought I was the bees knees purchasing a ‘designer’ bag. When I bought my LV I thought that would be it - I had my holy grail, and didnt need anything else. But it wasnt my perfect bag - its a tote, and I love totes, but it was a GM Neverfull, and I soon felt a bit ridiculous popping to the shops to get a few things, carrying this ginormous tote. So then I downsized to a smaller tote, then saw a different size in canvas that was really cute, and then wanted it to be a bit more upmarket in leather and purchase a Michael Kors, then bought the mini version. Ive gotten to the point where I try not to duplicate designs/colours, as I feel I have a bag for every occasion and colours to go with most outfits. It slowed me down ( a little) and I’m pretty happy with my current selection. Will see how that goes. I felt a bit bad as today I purchased a bag which is quite different to my normal tastes. I’m hesitant, but I fell in love with it in the store a few weeks ago and patiently waited for a sale. I’m pretty strategic with my purchases and try not to pay full price if I dont have to. I love bags and they do bring me happiness (but not the only thing!). I feel it is the one thing that I love spending my money on, love carrying, and spend time appreciating my collection.
I’ve weighed in on this thread a long ago, but my thoughts have changed over time. Most people have collections or hobbies they enjoy and spend money on, whether they collect teacups, coins, comic books, play video games, etc… My husband restores classic hot rods. He purchased a property and built a huge warehouse on it just to store and work on them. I don’t spend a fraction of what he spends on my hobbies or bag collection.
I don’t ‘need’ more than one bag, and having special bags for different outfits is a first world issue. But I enjoy putting outfits, jewelry, bags, and shoes together. It’s a form of creative expression. My bag collection doesn’t define me or come first in my life. I can do this and still give back to others in need.
At this point I’ve slowed way down and am very careful about bag purchases. I suppose I feel like I have most of the bags I want. Also, I now need a special room to hold my bag collection, and it’s getting crowded in there. There are a few more I’d like to add over time, but I don’t feel a burning need to shop for them at the moment. The only bag I’m picking up soon is a black Saint Laurent Lou camera bag to replace the one I’ve been beating up for two years (my go to, most beloved every day bag). I’ve used and abused it, overstuffed it, carried it in the rain, thrown it around, and recently detected some exterior red pen marks only visible in certain lighting. It’s okay for now, but I want one waiting in the wings for the day I have to retire it.
