I just had to return my DB large Florentine Satchel in Natural because the leather was too prone to spotting and dye transfer. I really thought that DB was going to be an 'it' bag for me after drooling over it for a year. Sad to see it go but can't deal with leather that is that fussy.

I'm looking for your help in finding a bag of similar carrying capacity that looks saddle-baggy or like a Indiana Jones satchel. It has to be real leather and earth tone colors, though I'd consider a true, deep red or a dark blue. I want to stay away from unfinished leather. Looking for a bag about 14-18 inches wide, 9-11 inches high and around 5-6 inches deep, depending on the other dimensions I might be able to get away with 4" deep. I could consider a N-S bag as well as an E-W orientation.

I like beat up looking bags but don't mind aging them myself. I have been looking at the Frye Cameron Satchel, not sure of the depth as different stores give different measurements and torn between Cognac and Taupe.

I'm on a limited budget, I really can't go over $450. This will be a daily-use bag, I don't change my bags often.

I read tPF avidly and I know folks here can help me out! Thanks a bunch.

Check out Roots. They have several styles that would qualify.

Thanks ,Pinkhamsterfeet, I have checked out Roots (I have a Lauren tote) and the only bag they have that I like right now is the Londoner bag, but it's not the satchel I am looking for. The black Prince leather just doesn't have that 'Indiana Jones' vibe.

I have religiously checked Fossil too, but nothing there is exciting me.

Have you looked at any of the other Dooney lines? Like Dillen. They sell bags in the "Florentine satchel" style in Dillen leather:

I have several Dillen bags and the treated leather is pretty tough and hardy, even the "natural" color.

The All Weather Leather bags are also pretty tough.

Hey Sue,
Thought about getting the Florentine Satchel in a Dillen leather, I have 4 Dillen bags and they are tough as iron. And I've got several vintage AWL bags. But, to me, the Dillen version of this bag doesn't give me that used/Distressed/yee-haw cowgirl look I'm looking for. It's just a big purse (but pretty, I'll admit).
It's kinda hard to describe what I want. It's sort of the Frye Cameron Satchel but bigger, a bit slouchier, would prefer outside pockets. And I don't want it to look like a briefcase. (many of the Roots bags are just too briefcasey, if I wanted that look I'd order a satchel from The Leather Satchel Co. in the UK).

I know just the sort of bag you mean. I was in love with Mulberry for a while. I loved the semi-slouchy Bayswater, but the oak Darwin leather was just too sensitive to rain and snow, especially for the price, and they stopped making the Rosemary.

Sometimes LL.Bean sells leather messenger-style bags. If you keep an eye on ebay they sometimes pop up for around $100. They tend to be very basic bags with simple rough-looking leather, but they hold up well.

Thanks for your help, Sue. I had an old leather LLBean backpack, weighed a ton but would last beyond the apocalypse!

Heck, I probably don't even belong on these forums: I own no LV, no Bal, no Chloe....nothing over $500. I just appreciate a well-designed bag made of quality materials. I'd rather have a two dozen of the afore-mentioned than 2 LV monogrammed bags. And I'm a leather junkie, pretty leather, thick and sturdy leather. The only bag I learned about here on tPF that I truly lust after is the Proenza Schouler PS1. But I'll never buy it. But I love the style. Low key, minimal hardware, good leather: right up my alley.

My first thought was a Fossil messenger, but I see they didn't grab you. How about the Coach classic field bag? Also the J. Crew darlington might work?

I like this Coach a lot. Thanks! I only have one Coach bag and never carry it but the Field bag is nice.

Isabellam, I really appreciate you taking the time to search, and I like a couple of the bags you found, but I don't eBay....ever. Had some CC fraud issues with PayPal and won't EVER use it again. Bought about $10 worth of yarns to weave with and got hit up with over $1500 of fraudulent charges. Got resolved but never again. My first, and last, eBay/ PayPal transaction.

Hey, Elliespurse, thank you. I love Saddleback and I keep an eye on their website. For what I want right now, I guess I'm looking for a less stiff bag than Saddleback, though seriously eyeing an iPad cover... But the bag must come first...limited budget.

The Libaire site....bookmarked that....definitely worth revisiting though nothing there scratching this particular itch....you know how it is when ya got something in your mind that you want, and you know it's out there....somewhere.

Wish I knew how to post pix, then I could give some ideas on what's floating my boat....doing this from an iPad so not quite sure how/ if I can post pix...

^Yes keep looking and asking here, you'll find the one you're looking for.

Thought I'd explain a little. Got the DB Florentine Satchel as a gift. The giver now understands that the leather is not something I can work with. I returned the bag with her knowledge. She has no problem with me finding another bag to replace her gift, but I need to spend close to the $427 she spent on the original gift. She'll feel insulted if I replace her gift with a bag much more expensive, as if she gave an 'inadequate' gift. I don't want to hurt her feelings, she wants to know what I ultimately get, and I know she'll check prices.

So far, I like the suggested Coach Field Bag and I am hoping someone will weigh in about the dimensions of the Frye Cameron Satchel. I posted a question on the Frye thread, too.

Thank you all for you suggestions, I've gotten one great bag to consider and several great bag lines to look for future bags. I really appreciate all your help.
I hope to get some more suggestions.
