^^^ hahahaaa! I'm sorry, Jenn, that IS bogus.

I was disappointed w my college peers when I was in the grind... we had this great (sEXay!!!) Romantic Lit prof (swoooooon!) who was so intelligent and really pushed us to have these great discussions, but w so few reading the material and giving a damn and being prepared, so many of them just fell by the wayside. And this was a senior-level 300-something English-major class.

And, wth? MLA has changed?! I feel so out-of-date.

I'm super-scrrred for my boys, since we'll be fighting a million peeps for the few public school slots that are actually good. Just the pre-k slots are brutal. If you loved the mockumentaries of a few years ago... there's a hysterical real doc--Nursery Universary... http://www.nydailynews.com/lifestyle/2009/04/19/2009-04-19_parents_learn_that_preschools_can_be_as_competitive_as_harvard_and_yale.html about some New York parents trying to get into the private pre-k's there... At least Chicago has a few public options!!!! :sweatdrop:

I think I sent a "fix your POS server" email to all of the clients of one of our vendors due to their questionable implementation of distribution lists. :smash: I guess it isn't too bad since we already let them put out a press release saying they were working with us and I didn't mention anything specific about products.

Re: kids today -- there's really a lack of personal responsibility and drive, but also an overabundance of entitlement. I, however, lack the drive to rant about it right now. :D

Okay, for the student that couldn't make page length and had the spacing issues- WTF?!

Now, for that class your are talking about implementing.... I think it is a great idea. At the university I attended, we had the same kind of class that was REQUIRED for all freshmen (it was a 1 credit hour elective). It was/still is co-instructed by a faculty member AND a current upper classman (yes, they were volunteers)... I was a Peer Instructor for our freshman seminar for two years, and I loved it. It is not paid, but if you are involved on campus, it was a great way to branch out even more. I think I learned a lot from the freshmen, too. We had an "open" class at the end of the semester where it was just the student peer instructor and the class only. They were allowed to ask me anything they wanted (within my descreion), and it was great. Some of the required assignments for the course were to attend a campus email set up, campus tour, student budgeting class, alcohol/drug education class, visit to the tutoring center, tour of the career center, etc. It really was a good idea. I think one year I did a scavenger hunt for the class to places I KNEW they'd go (hangouts, eateries on campus, etc.) and there were prizes at each that were donated or coupons, etc. It was fun.

Jen--MLA updated in '09 but I doubt you're using it for biz proposals!:hugs:

Honestly, I'm to the point where I just want them to format the ESSAY correctly. I'm just talking the basics. Margins. Spacing. DH had a student turn in an essay yesterday (two weeks left in the semester) triple-spaced, in 14-point font, and she STILL couldn't make the page length. It's ridiculous.

.............. I'm on a committee looking at retention and I'm pushing HARD for a required 1-2 credit course that all incoming freshmen will have to take (most larger universities do this already) that just covers time management and the practical wake-up call they all need. No, mom won't drag your a$$ out of bed, so you'll have to make that 8am class all on your lonesome.

I still have students telling me they can't figure out their campus email, so could I please use their *[email protected]* account or some ..........QUOTE]

Unfortunately, I see all this same behavior at the elementary level. It's truly horrifying and today was one of those days. I spent my whole day wanting to throttle a lot of sixth graders who can't seem to do one homework assignment. One! I feel like I should talk to the wall instead of to these kids. There's no sense of personal responsibility and they take no pride in their work. Half the time I feel like their mother having to ask where their glasses are or where's your homework? Blah, blah, blah. I really am getting sick of my own voice and having to repeat every. single. thing. It's been one of those weeks. I can't wait for winter break. Two more weeks...

jenni - i hear you. I went to a nerd school so there weren't a lot of people there who didn't want to be in school. I did TA at a state school and the students expected to get an A if they barely followed instructions or still pass the course if they missed the one midterm. I don't think I was the best TA but still sheesh. I felt worst about one student who was actually trying but was unable to write in complete sentences in anything approaching proper English. I referred her to the school writing center but I don't know if they'd be able to fix it.

ETA - On the flip side of the no effort thing was the over competitive nature of a lot of the undergrads esp in pre-med and a couple of other majors. People would try to sabotage each other and do crap like steal reading material that was on hold. No wonder I hated that place.

Jenni, this killed me: "Bite me, comma splice fascist."

My world is somewhat different, yet the same. My employees are supposedlyl well-educated college graduates, yet they can't seem to rub two brain cells together. Yesterday, for example, one of them informed me that they forgot to change the phone number in a TV script, so I had it produced with the WRONG PHONE NUMBER. Hello? PROOF MUCH? I told him that the costs for the revision would come out of his next paycheck. He doesn't know yet that I'm kidding. Fun to see him sweat.

And I thought I'd share something comical from my casa last night... while Jake was reading jokes from a new book sent by a dear friend, Luke became supremely miffed at Jake's ability to read and demanded, "MOMMY! Teach me to read! RIGHT NOW!!"

Happy Thursday to all of the HHHotties!

Ah...Jen..I feel your pain in so many ways.

Re: Luke and Jake. Thanks for posting this. It gives me hope for the future of our country as long as they use their powers for good and not evil.

I'm biting my nails right now. I have to leave to go into Manhattan but Li, my younger DD, is taking (or has taken) her road test as I type this. I want her to pass, I really do, but the thought of her driving gives me a major stomachache. I trust her, it's the other idjits on the road I have issues with. I know if she doesn't pass today she will pass the next time. Then she will really have to master driving.

Yesterday I was driving on the highway during the monsoon. Visibility, even when using my brights was nil between the wind, the rain, and the fog. I couldn't see anything and felt like I was Stevie Wonder driving on the highway. Yet there were motorists weaving in and out of the lanes, while driving way above the speed limit. On local streets here in my hood, there are posses of teenagers speeding at more than 50MPH, running stop lights.

OMG..she just called me. She passed the first time out, no points off. More hairs are turning grey as I sit here. Now all three of my kids drive. Even less sleep for me at night until they all arrive home safely. I'm off to Manhattan.

xoxo

 Awe that is so sweet! That put a smile on my face. It's so cute that both he wants to be like his big bro and that he's got a desire to learn. Makes ya want to bottle it and break it out when he's in high school. LOL

Gingey - I feel your pain. Both my kids have been in accidents - luckily all fender bender types - no injuries to anyone - but (if I didn't have highlights) the extra grey hairs would be visible. It is a frightening world.

Aw, I love it Jwhit! And if I could have my way, (if I had any plans to have children, which I don't) I'd have two boys and name them Jacob and Lucas. I love those names!

RE: this generation
A friend sent me this article about Generation Y and Millenials that I found really really interesting, and also the link within that goes to the Pew Research Study. I think a lot of you guys will identify with the writer.

I'm so sad. I think my car is totally totaled and they don't make it in that color anymore so I have to get a different one. I also just filled the tank, I guess at least I kept putting off getting it detailed. I think it handled the impact well, the car twisted and the windows exploded and various pieces came off, but I didn't have to go to the hospital. I think the rear axel is toast and the trunk won't open and things just don't line up anymore. How sad for it. I guess I should decided if I should get the same thing or go cheaper now that I am a poor home owner. I'm pretty sure my mom is totally **** talking me at this very minute.

MT! What happened!!!??? Didn't you have a bad car accident that caused all the shoulder problems?! OMG! You have bad car accident luck! I hope you are really ok!!! I think if I was you I would have PTSD anytime I got in a car! Yiiikes!!!!

PS, I think you should get a Suburban or something.
