Yikes, MB! Is your internet back up yet?
I took a leather bag making workshop on Friday. It was free at Mood Fabrics (where they shop on Project Runway), which is unreal to me because it was such a great workshop. The instructor even worked through lunch and stayed late so we could finish. The plan was for everyone to make boxy totes, but he helped us draft our own patterns so we could make whatever we wanted. I didn't finish completely. The hardware I bought was too small (and I didn't really like it anyway) so I need to buy more before I can complete the bag. Since it was my first bag I didn't want to use expensive leather, so I got some slightly blemished cowhide from Tandy that they were selling by the pound -- about 15-20sqft for $22. It was a mushroomy brown, but I put a metallic gold stain over it to hide the blemishes. I made a slouchy hobo with a pleated bottom and mystery braided strap. I need to add D-rings to the bag and clips to the ends of the strap to finish. I wanted the strap attached with clips so it was less boring. The lining is a bitter-lime inspired sateen. I didn't have enough time to do pockets, but maybe on the next one. I was so tired when I got home. I didn't realize what hard work it was while I was doing it because I was too engrossed. I bought more hides at Mood for my next project, whatever that ends up being. It was so much fun.
