Sneaking in here for a minute. I just finished frying up a whole table full of hand grated (not food processed) pounds of potatoes and onions for home made potato pancakes (latkes). Served with traditional applesauce made with granny smith apples and not so traditional creme fraiche, chopped onions, caviar and more topping for the adults. The college kids didn't get the caviar..LOL.
Jen, I commiserate with you. I switched between right and left hand. Delts, triceps and forearms are aching like crazy. Best workout this side of Pilates.
DDs made homemade garlic bread with pesto, chocolate truffles, molten chocolate death by chocolate cupcakes, I made homemade (traditional) jelly donuts called sufganiyote. Lots of dairy and vegetarian dishes, soups, rolls, dips, finger food..I never want to see another potato until next year. I'm thinking about how much time should elapse before I serve anything with mushrooms. BTW, Latkes or potato pancakes are a European, Ashkenazi , Chanukkah tradition, while the suganiyote are Middle Eastern, Sepharadi, Israeli tradition. Both involve oil...lots of it..as in deep fried..and greasy..and heaven on earth when fresh.
This year, with all the craziness (I worked non-stop for days so didn't have much prep time) and with such a mixed group of guests (and crashers) I decided to serve both groups buffet style. Much less serving for me.
We trimmed the entire house inside and outside with blue and white fairy lights, including the palm trees indoors, tinsel, lit my huge Chanukiah (FYI, a menorah has 7 lights, the traditional Chanukiah has a total of 9).
Lu, I remember you asked about this. It's really anything goes when it comes to decorating, depending on a family's traditions. The given is lighting the Chanukiah. We have fun decorating inside and outside. We even have a Chanukah Harry (do not ask about this, again, it's sort of a family joke because my brother (may he rest in peace) would dress up like Santa each year and visit children in shelters....suffice it to say we re-dressed a Santa who looks uncannily like my Baby Brother..it makes me smile to see him but we hide him when Mom comes over, like tonight).
We also hang a Disney quilt that we bought when the kids were little, featuring a Chanukiah with the seven dwarves, and Prince Charming as branches holding the candles (a new one gets velcroed in place each night), and Snow White as the middle, taller branch holding the candle that lights the rest (Shamash)
Lots of a cappella singing and hoisting assorted potent and non-potent beverages and raucousness going on still.
Now a slightly non-traditional game of beer pong is going on. (I've confiscated car keys already.) Plus some sort of something rowdy involving shutting off the backyard security light lights, blindfolds, sheets worn as diapers or togas (perhaps some sort of quasi-Grecian or Maccabian costume attempt?), a frisbee, a football, badminton racquets and birdies (the shuttlecock kind, {no dirty jokes please} not my african grey/sun conure kind) and no outdoor jackets permitted even though it's about 30 and dropping, is going on in my backyard. Do I want to even venture a guess?
I feel old.
Gotta go downstairs and mingle. I hate mingling. I want to sit in a hot bath and brood. I used to have a huge family gathering most holidays. Now it's just Mom, me, kids and DH.
