My only rule is any new bag either has to be better than something I already have or fill a gap. I've often sold a bag when a better example has come along. At one time I could buy 2 bags a season from Gucci, H or BV but for the last 4 years only 1 a year. I think the key word is patience.
I have adopted this rule of yours ever since you posted it on another thread. It’s so helpful to bat down “almost” purchases. It also keeps upgrading my collection.
Thanks everyone for your sound advice!
I definitely know that I prefer top handle bags with a detachable shoulder strap for my "going out" bag. During the day when I'm running errands, I have 2 totes that I use: Mansur Gavriel during the spring/summer and a von Holzhausen during the fall/winter. I have a large collection of smaller daybags and an even smaller collection of evening bags.

I guess I'll wait a while before I decide to purchase/pass on the red Elleme Baozi bag. I think what's attracting me to the bag is the amazing red color.
Did you post a photo? And, red bags are show stoppers.
After awhile it seems kind of crazy to keep purchasing bags. Look at all those folks on Instagram, they rave about their new things and months later those bags they “loved “ are up for sale. Once it becomes a useless obsession, think it’s time to stop buying.
Yes! This. For those slike me) who want to use all our bags, at some point, you have to stop buying because you’ll run out of days in the year to wear everything.

I definitely have a soft spot for a red bag. I have a red bag that I purchased in London years ago, but the bag is so dinky and doesn't have a shoulder/crossbody strap so I can never go hands free.

@Sparkletastic Here are pics of the red bag I'm interested in.

@Sparkletastic - There's something about a red bag. I also really like the detachable chain detail. And I've been in touch with Elleme and they're willing to ship out a separate detachable leather strap in red - which I think will be perfect for more "casual" days.

@luxurybagsilove - When you add a new bag to your collection do you rehome any of your other bags?

I think I'm going to have to return the Mansur Gavriel mini mini lady bag (in navy) as the bag is so tiny that it looks like a bag a small child would carry. Not enough space for a small wallet, keys and sunglasses. What was I thinking?

I'm not quite satisfied yet, because the first few major purchases I've made were blunders. They ended up being wrong purchases because they were beautiful to look at, but not practical for my actual lifestyle. I loved how romantic pastels were, and in my opinion, this made them even scarier to use because they were mid-large sized.

I've then switched it up and bought black Coach bags, and I've been getting good use out of them. I'm not quite satisfied until I fill certain practicality holes, but after that, I do believe there is in an end in sight and bags thereafter will no longer be fulfilling a "need".

@Icing_Time - Having a wishlist seems like such a smart way to purchase since you've identified a need and then spend money on filling holes, as opposed to buying on a whim. I'm not entirely sure whether a red purse fills a hole or is a whim, but I know I've been wanting one for years, so does that count as filling a hole? :)

I would say it does! But I would recommend before you splurge on a red one, if you can make a red one work for your lifestyle in the first place. It is certainly a statement piece and isn't always easy to match - but if you already are comfortable wearing red or would like that to be the statement of your outfit, then why not?

I would personally recommend a low-budget version of the bag first. And after that trial period, you feel good about using that color/style, then that might provide you with good reassurance.

Gorgeous! Red is one of my favorite bag colors! Does that kind of strap feel comfortable? I've never had just a chain strap except in a tiny evening bag that I use as a clutch.
