Both Alex and Gustaf have talked in interviews about how different they are
in terms of personality. I remember an interview with Alex some years ago
for a swedish magazine (before the True Blood era) where he talked about their different
behaviour and approach to their problems during the teenage years, though he
never mentioned My and addictionproblems.
His reaction was to become more independent from the parents and he tried to
avoid them. Gustaf on the other hand was acting out a lot with big fights with the
parents all the time. Alex also told about his rebellion against his "hippiefamily" as
he called it, by joining the military. He said he was in need for discipline at that time.
He also sometimes got into fights mostly because he tried to help his friends,
Stellan even had to pic him up from the policestation once because of that.
So maybe moving from Sweden was a good thing for Alex.
Gustaf had a different career path, working in Sweden was probably best for him .
Taking care of the younger siblings must be Stellans responsibility as the father.

Btw, I don´t think any of us can know how close Alex is to his mother and
compare that to Gustaf, it is ridiculous. :weird:

I don't really think that's what's being discussed :weird: My has talked quite a bit and very openly about her issues in many interviews. It's always Gustaf she refers too and it's often Gustaf who's asked for a comment, which he has given on several occasions. That's one thing. Alex doesn't talk about their family history like that at all. There's nothing wrong with that, IMO, but it is a striking difference between how they choose to discuss that subject.
Also since we discuss just about everything from their work to their girlfriends to their choice of cars/socks/underwear/you name it, we discuss it, then isn't hardly ridiculous to discuss how their sibling relationship seem to be. No one is suggesting that Alex has a bad relationship with his mother and siblings :weird: But obviously him living in the US since what? at least 2008 would make him less close to his parents and siblings who more or less live together still.

Gosh! We haven't scratched on his halo. We've just discussed something that two of the three people in question have done also in interviews.

And all the above mentioned facts are known. They're also from his teenage years. I seriously hope he has changed since then otherwise ...

Well, I can´t help my reaction when I read some of the posts here.:wondering
There is this constant comparing of Alex and Gustaf, and very often
shade is thrown at Alex in a subtile way, thats my sense of it anyway.
Gustaf has been living in Sweden and of course he is close to the family and My, but
you assume a little to much sometimes. You have no idea of the relations between
them, unless you are a close friend of the family. You can have your fantasy and I
can have mine, thats all there is to it.
I hope we can agree that we are allowed to express different opinions.

We are here to discuss and express our opinions, I agree. I'm not sure I think it's fair to say that discussing what has been said in interviews is "having a fantasy" :weird: Fact is that Gustaf is very close to his mother, she to him and that he took care of the younger siblings when My had problems. My has said this in interviews, Gustaf has said this in interviews. I'm guessing you think our speculation on where Alex fits into that is fantasies? It's not, IMHO, presented as anything but speculation and again: no one is suggesting that he's not close to his mother or siblings.

I like reading different perspective and opinions.

I thought it was pretty much known that Alex isn't close to his siblings. I have no doubt he loves them but even Valter admitted that they don't really know each other that well because Alex has lived in the states for the past 10 years.

True! I remember one of them said, not sure if Alex or Gustaf but I think it was Gustaf, due to Alex leaving home soon after graduating (first studying in the UK, then the US) he didn't have to deal as much with My's addiction and the family at large. Gustaf was the one taking care of the younger siblings protecting them from the emotional harm that the realisation of your mom being an alcoholic and cancer patient could bring. So that's why Gustaf seems to be closer with the younger siblings than with Alex.

Yes, he's definitely close to them. Gustaf was like their surrogate parent.

I'm quite sure he gets envious from time to time of the opportunities Alex especially gets. I doubt he gets envious of performance though. He sounds quite cocky about his own abilities and downright pouty when he - on rare occasions - gets critizied for his work. But then again. They're all actors - to me most actors seem somewhat competetive and in envy of each other's succes so I guess the real question is, if their family relationship is affected by their different paths and succeses. I don't think it is. Alex and Gustaf never seemed especially close to me, but I don't think it's Alex's succes in Hollywood that's the reason for that. And both Alex and Gustaf seem very fond and proud of Bill so yeah.. I don't see sibling hate/dislike based on work envy here.

I think that's spot on Idun. Gustaf's too arrogant about his own ability to feel inferior to Alex. After watching Vi, he has every right to.

Without trying to scratch Alex's halo *shoutout to Bag* They're part of a famous family and pursued the same profession. Of course there will be comparisons about their talent and personality.

It's weird to me because if I would think who would be more nurturing out of the two of them, I would say Alex based on how sweet he seems. It seems like it was really Gustaf, arrogant and sometimes surly, who felt like he needed to be the support system for the family. Alex was not obligated to put his life and career ambitions on hold for his younger siblings but I still find some of his choices interesting.

I'm aware that I don't *know* any of these people but there it is.

I gave my opinion anyway. :happydance:

I mean that speculation is a form of fantasy and creates an image of a person and his
personality and relations to other people. It is just a fantasyimage unless he is a close
friend and you know him well. But that is what we all do here, we speculate and have a
fantasy of the person, more or less based on the actions and images we know of.
I am all for it as long as there are good wibes.

I know where you're coming from and I think part of that simply is that Alex has given more interviews in English where he could show a bit of his personality unlike Gustaf. Most of the time Gustaf gives Swedish interviews or short English ones. So based on that I think they're equally nurturing but Gustaf walks the talk.

Just because Gustaf stayed home in Sweden doesn't mean he's less ambitious than Alex. He might just look and wait for better work (good for you, Gustaf).

That's a good point, Bag. I've watched practically every Alex interview available and haven't seen that many with Gustaf.

I'm still so shaken by Vi. I'm going to watch it again in a few days when I regain my strength!

I actually haven't seen any nasty comparisons here between Gustaf and Alex. More it was discussing family dynamics and the difference between them as actors. I didn't see anyone painting one as good, the other bad. Especially when you see them both in interviews discussing characters, they are both aware that no-one is either, many people have elements of both ie gray :-)

I don't think Alex leaving at all was him abandoning the family, more that he was already popular in Sweden and wanted to get out and see what the rest of the world had to offer. Which left a space to fill as the eldest child in the house, which Gustaf filled.

I don't really think there's any ill will between them at all, but siblings do have natural competition and differences regardless of who they are. In regards to their mother, in family that size, it's natural and normal for there to be varying degrees in their relationship - with both their mother and father.

I do think their leanings and artistic interests are very, very different.

You edited your post to add this comment.

I'm not sure what you mean by the rhinoceros skin of Alex. Yeah he was toiling around Hollywood for years before getting cast in Generation Kill. He had the financial luxury to do so unlike most actors. So even if he got turned down for a role, he never had to work a regular job. He's handsome and blonde but I'm not sure what types of roles might be available to him as he starts to age. His hairline has gotten further and further back too.

I remember reading Alex said he worked in a coffee shop so he did have a regular job. :thinkin:

I can relate to Gustaf in that area. My mom was an alcoholic as well and she later on got sick. I was the one caring (and still care) for my mom who's wheelchair bound and has Alzheimer's. My sister was off living her life, going to concerts, clubbing etc. and never helped me once with our mom. As years went by, my youth was drained from me as well as my health. To this day my sister still doesn't help, and boy, let me tell you, I have major resentment when it comes to her. I also got addicted to stuff. Lots of baggage when you have to take care for someone on your own. I have to see a therapist every week just to let out steam, so I hope Gustaf at least had someone to talk to. :pullhair:

I don't know what happened with Alex and the family situation. I know he joined the Swedish Marines and did what he had to do with his life career-wise by going to school and stuff. He said clearly in several interviews, he just wanted out from his family which is why he first joined service. Stellan divorced My, got remarried and moved on. Stellan should have been the one caring for the kids, not Gustaf. Shi**y thing to do to say the least. I do notice in photos that Alex hangs out more with Bill and Valter and sometimes Eija. As someone who's on the outside, who knows what the dynamics are in that family. What hang out photos been leaked or not. I am hoping that Gustaf was not the only one trying to keep the family together at all times. I do hope Alex came back to help from time to time. But from what I read from My's interviews as well as Gustaf's, it was Gustaf who was handling the household and My's care. The only thing I recall Alex saying is that he is proud of his mother and everything she's accomplished. :shrugs:

From what I read, it does seem that Alex is the most open to his fans and nicest when it comes to meeting them. He also comes across so humble and down to earth in all his interviews. No arrogance or snobbery at all. Sadly with Gustaf and Bill, it's a different thing. They both comes across very arrogant in their interviews and I heard on several occasions Bill isn't the friendliest to fans. Of course, I wasn't there, just going by what I read when people met Bill. :shrugs:

Hi everybody!
I'm also a big fan of Gustaf and his work, crazy about Vikings, really LOVED Vi and his performance in Patrik 1.5! (among others)
I found pictures of his trip in Africa with a friend on this Instagram account :
https://instagram.com/ivanspee/
(I don't know how to post just the pictures on the forum, it's my first time at this ;)!)

Thanks for sharing this link. These images are amazing!! It must have been quite an experience for these guys.

Does anyone know if Vikings has been renewed for another season?

There aren't that many pics of Gustaf and I can't post the videos.
Looks like they went from Ethiopia southwards to Namibia. Gosh, that must've taken an eternity to plan.

You mean there is A LOT of Gustaf compare to what we usually see of him which is almost nothing, his instagram account is private :noworry:
There is also two another pictures on this instagram account (april 26, 2014 and november 16, 2013):
https://instagram.com/liwestling/
I love the picture of him and her child (just a friend or his girlfriend? cute girl!;) )

It seems like they spent two months in Africa! So lucky! That's my dream to go to those places, I should have gone with them :p!
