In almost every single interview Gustaf has given the last couple of years, he has expressed frustration with the casting show that's going on in Hollywood. I think if he coud skip it, he would. Because he's ambitious he needs to go there, just like parts of him wants to too. It can be tough enough even when you're a traditional good looking guy (was it 10 years Alex got rejected over and over again until he got GK and TB?) - if you're someone like Gustaf who not the traditional heartthrob it must be even more difficult. Add that Alex and Bill are always named as the pretty ones.. at times it must be BRUTAL, even if he doesn't seem to lack good parts. He seems pretty good at dealing with it though but since he does mention it from time to time, it must be a bit of an issue IMO..

I watched Vi and I just have to comment on it even though the film came out a while ago.

The performance Gustaf gives in this film is astonishing. I thought he was very good in Patrick 1.5 and Evil.

Vi takes him to an entirely different level. The nuances that he brought to the character were superb. The film is disturbing as you witness the dysfunctional relationship of these broken and toxic people.

Every time Gustaf is on screen he brings such tension and power. The way he could change his character from vulnerable to menacing was astonishing. No gimmicks. No scary music. Just his face and body language. He's absolutely brilliant! His scenes with Rebecca Ferguson made my toes curl. I'm still rattled.

I respect him so much.

If there's any justice in the acting world, Gustaf will be considered for better roles. He's so much more than quirky Floki. It's a waste of his talent even though it's given him recognition.

I watched Vi several times. I absolutely hated his character. It was a brilliant piece of acting! I hope Vikings will open more doors for him outside of Sweden.

He'll definitely never be a Hollywood leading man and his looks probably have something to do with it. But I also suspect that he's a little spoilt. He rolled into the trade thanks to his father and he never seemed to have had any problems getting parts in Sweden and Norway. I don't think he was ever willing to start from scratch again in order to 'make it' in Hollywood.

I can imagine there's envy there too. I remember reading what he said when Alex got to work with Lar's. It was all in good fun and laughter but deep inside you know that must have hurt a bit.

I'm quite sure he gets envious from time to time of the opportunities Alex especially gets. I doubt he gets envious of performance though. He sounds quite cocky about his own abilities and downright pouty when he - on rare occasions - gets critizied for his work. But then again. They're all actors - to me most actors seem somewhat competetive and in envy of each other's succes so I guess the real question is, if their family relationship is affected by their different paths and succeses. I don't think it is. Alex and Gustaf never seemed especially close to me, but I don't think it's Alex's succes in Hollywood that's the reason for that. And both Alex and Gustaf seem very fond and proud of Bill so yeah.. I don't see sibling hate/dislike based on work envy here.

True! I remember one of them said, not sure if Alex or Gustaf but I think it was Gustaf, due to Alex leaving home soon after graduating (first studying in the UK, then the US) he didn't have to deal as much with My's addiction and the family at large. Gustaf was the one taking care of the younger siblings protecting them from the emotional harm that the realisation of your mom being an alcoholic and cancer patient could bring. So that's why Gustaf seems to be closer with the younger siblings than with Alex.

I don't think I've read any interviews adressing this but since Gustaf has worked in Sweden more or less all the time and Alex was abroad for various things, it must have been so. It's a bit funny in a way that both Gustaf and My have talked about that time but Alex hasn't. I guess he doesn't want to talk about that kind of private thing, which is fair enough. It is however very touching to see the relatiosnhip between Gustaf and My - they seem very close and supportive of each other and I love how they're both so open about their addictions - God knows, we need more people who are that here.. It's very brave of them IMO.

You can't talk about something you haven't experienced. If Alex was away for most of that time it's clear that Gustaf has bonded more with his mother over that than Alex. And given, as you said, he's still not talking about it it seems he's avoiding that subject for whatever reason (his own or his mother's).

I have read/watched an interview where Gustaf said that he had to take care of his siblings and Alex wasn't there. I think Gustaf might had a hard time and therefore he turned easy to addiction. Just my thoughts and yes I know how if feels to have an addicted parent.

*kram*

Addiction is a horrible thing and it's even more horrible when there are children involved. I'm glad My got sober and Gustaf seems to have been a very good support for her and his siblings.

They're really different people. I generally don't like to compare apples and oranges..but as actors Gustaf is very intense. I'm enjoying him atm in Vikings and I've seen him in quite a few other things where he's been really good.
