The 35 I use the most is Barenia, which is not exactly known for being lightweight! But since I usually carry it by the shoulder strap, it doesn't really bother me. It can get heavy if I really load it up -- like with all larger bags, the danger is not that they're heavier empty but more that we have the tendency to load them up. I guess I'd say the weight doesn't bother me but I also don't use it every single day. The weight of my Garden Party bothers me more, but that's because I load it up and it's not as comfortable on the shoulder.

(My Dalvy's are my Sellier alternative)
Do you have any thoughts about Sellier vs Retourne?
I like the classic formality of he Sellier style but lately I'm enjoying the casual look of Retourne
Do you know if Sellier or Retourne was the original Kelly?
I read the bag was an adaptation of another style

Hi Catsinthebag, thanks for your detailed reply. Oh the confusion and the gut wrenching decisions H puts us through, lol! It's interesting to see you use the 35's more than the 32. I am 5.6" but I never let my height determine the bag size I choose. I tend to err on the side of bigger bags as I can use it daytime and running errands on the weekends. It is not a purchase for evening, and I find gold is not an evening colour anyways (at least not for me). Oh, yes I should mention it is Retourne and completely agree that a Sellier would be much better in a smaller size. I think I will take a day or so and think about it. If it's meant to be it will still be there. The price is great, it is 2015 and the price is not overinflated like a lot of bags are. It is also local (I live in Canada) so I don't have to deal with duty fees. So it is very tempting indeed! I appreciate your input on 32 vs. 35!!

You raise a good point about orange. I am not one that will collect bags. I want to carefully curate my bag collection that it is simple yet useful. I think gold makes much more sense now.

Hermes is not like some other handbag lines
The choices are more limited given availability

The original Kelly design predecessor was a 35cm saddle bag. I can't find whether it was Retourne or Sellier, but my guess would be Sellier.

My Barenia K is Retourne. I wanted retourne because barenia feels like a casual leather to me and retourne style seemed to fit it better. Also, I was afraid I'd bash the corners of a 35 Sellier into everything! That said, another member here has a Sellier 35 in Barenia and it is gorgeous.

My three Kelly's are all retourne. It's really personal preference (and, when shopping the vintage market, what is available). If I get another, it will be a 32, maybe Sellier, maybe Retourne -- it depends on what the H universe sends my way!

I don't know whether the original K was sellier or retourne but I bet some of the historical experts here will know!

I agree! When I got my barenia K35, it was a bit of a leap of faith. It came from a reseller with a return policy but I wasn't sure about the size at first. As I used it, I went from liking to loving it and now it's one of my most used bags. I think sometimes we need to use a bag a bit to really "bond" with it.

I own both new & vintage & wonder which I prefer.
There is a place for both in my collection but also something about the well kept older styles that give them character which is why Hermes is regarded for it's classic quality & design

Same here ! Always wanted only boxcalf in vintage all my other Hermes are new

If you can try the sizes on somewhere that would be ideal. I'm 5'5 I found this pic from my IG of my K35 on my lap. I do know it can be hard to really get a idea of size by pic. Hope this helps with getting a idea of the size of a 35. I know some people are totally big bag people and some are smaller bag people and I feel a 32 fits right in the middle of the two but get What works for you.
