I’ve been into vintage Chanel lambskin lately, and I was psyched to find a medium flap in pristine condition and a rare color by a reseller. The body of the bag is pristine - I’m not sure if I should post photos and videos as they technically belong to the reseller themselves, and I have it in writing that the previous owner was a collector who never used the bag. Naturally I assumed the strap would be in the same condition, given that it was said to be never used.

I received the bag whilst away. Bag, flap, interior—as shown—though the color is faded as compared to the photos on the website. The strap? Another story. Cracked leather, brownish-red discolorations deeply embedded throughout except for one segment that was strategically featured in the photos. I’m usually a boutique shopper—but if I’m seeking a discontinued/rare item, I’ll buy from reputable sites with return policies just in case. This… was a lapse. I was elated to find a light blue 1990s lambskin with SHW in such beautifully depicted condition. Silly me.

Response: ‘you never asked for photos of the strap’. Maybe this is on me, especially as I took quite a while to return home and inspect the Chanel in person, but I feel that the seller should have disclosed the discoloration and cracking throughout the strap. Heaps of people are into vintage Chanel and if the seller had shown the damage, I’m sure they’d have buyers queuing up who would have the confidence and ability to repair the extensive damage, simply not mind, or elsewise! I’d like to avoid inflammatory words but this felt like deliberate strategic misrepresentation.

I went back and reviewed the videos and photos and noticed that in each instance, the strap was discreetly tucked out of sight or only the good segments were shown. :/ staged photo is seller. The rest are mine. No filters or camera trickery or lighting were used.

I feel like a massive dupe, when I usually pride myself on being a savvy shopper. Sticking to the boutique experience or Fashionphile from now on. I was so looking forward to this gift to myself after a rough patch, too!

This is unacceptable. If the site said the bag was never used, that was clearly a misrepresentation. Call your credit card company and file a complaint. Also file a complaint with the site where you bought it.

I have never bought a Reissue but it is growing on me lately especially the Mini. This is really gorgeous ❤️
You should consider it. I wanted the most classic one: black w gold hardware, but then I saw this purple and I told myself I needed to get this color because it’s so beautiful and rare. I’m glad I did. The reissue style, especially the mini, is more versatile and discreet than the classic, and the aged calfskin is way more durable than the mini lambskin.

I have to say, it is quite unrealistic to find a 90s Chanel bag that has never been used. Lightly used, possible.

And the tarnish of hardware, that's quite normal even if never been used, lots of hardware started tarnish even in few years, depends on the environment it stored in.

I’m not going to detract from this thread being a happy place (I posted mainly as a vent, it’s true, but also as a warning to ask for photos from every angle if you’re buying from a shop without a return policy. I will be doing a chargeback and filing a complaint, thanks @alxyoung! )
Just a couple notes: 1. I was aware of the tarnished SHW and prepared to deal with it. I was not prepared for whatever is up with that strap. 2. I’ve encountered collectors of various items who DO preserve their collectors’ items of choice in, basically, the equivalent of biohazard clean rooms, more as decor than for use. From luxury handbags to shoes to ancient arcade consoles to art to chairs to lamps to an actor who owns 1000+ board games and has a special room built to store them, I’ve seen some setups where the person in question never uses their stuff, so the concept didn’t seem far-fetched. I’ve scored some cool designer RTW / atelier clothes at a mad discount from wardrobe designers who amassed items that never got used in the show and wanted rid of them since they were just cluttering up space.

Anyway! Back to cheerful topics. @msbang, that is a sumptuous spring bag! I keep returning to the words ‘chic’ and ‘cheerful’ to describe it, since the color and lustre is such that it will a bring a pop to your outfits , a spring in your step, and joy to anyone glimpsing such a lovely, happy, beautiful color!

This is terrible and obviously deliberate. I'm so sorry this happened to you. Definitely dispute the charge with your credit card and persistence will pay off.
