Family and Friends give you grief over your Handbag addiction?

My husband, however, still does not understand spending hundreds of dollars on a bag when you could buy a gun instead (his collector's hobby) "and that can kill someone."

I dunno... some of our handbags could do some hefty damage if you hit someone over the head with them, I think! :graucho:

My friends and family don't understand it either; I have to sneak new bags I buy into the house and lie about how much they cost to not endure endless grief over it, which is not at all enjoyable. It's my own money, I'm not struggling to make ends meet... so it shouldn't matter, but it apparently does. Sigh.

I often get this attitude too. Not just with handbags though. I buy nicer scrubs for work because they last longer and the stains actually come out of them. I had a coworker outright tell me that she thought I was unaware of what my job entails (I work as a CNA) I told her I was perfectly aware of my job duties but did not think it appropriate to dress poorly (her scrubs were the really cheap kind and were already really stained and two pairs had really noticeable tears in them already) in the presence of patients, who expect the people helping them to look nicer.

There was this guy I liked I went to visit him and he gave me grief over my handbag and doll collection (I also collect American Girl dolls) I thought, okay, whatever. I went to his condo in this posh guarded community and his house is filled with designer furniture and he was wearing a Lacoste polo! My parents are more affluent than him and yet his home is better furnished! I could not get over it, it angered me--spending money on handbags is wrong, but spending the equivalent of a new Chloe Paddington on a king sized bed frame is not wrong.

I have found with experience that people always have their things that they spend money on, and act jealous of those that have what they do not have. The coworker who had the attitude towards my scrubs for instance drives a brand new Neon and her husband owns a brand new Mustang.

Generally I do not care what people spend their money on until they tell me they think I'm frivilous. At that point all bets are off.

How many times have I sneaked a bag into my home???? Too many to count. How many times have I had to lie about the price??? Even more times. I have my new purchases delivered to work so that I can sneak them home - often they have to hide in the car if my boyfriend is around. It drives me nuts - it's my money!!! I pay my share of the bills, we have no kids, I work full-time and I don't smoke. I can't even confess to my friends (except one or two) as they either don't understand or resent my spending that much money on a bag! Even my mum can't appreciate them as she worries that I'll get myself into debt (I haven't done so far and I'm 43!). That's why I love tPF - it's so nice to be congratulated by fellow tPFers when you post that you've bought a new bag. I want to be able to shout it from the rooftops that I own 2 Chanel handbags - but I can't...

OMG they recently started, my parents especially. I was cleaning out my closet and I lined all my bags up and when my mom walked in, she started to nag me about having so many bags and I recently bought two new ones. She went and told my dad and now they both are on my case, so I avoid shopping with them now, at least for awhile...lol

My family has a hard time with my taste
what do you do?

Personally, I wouldn't automatically presume that your family members are jealous.

Your post isn't really detailed however I would assume that they do not favour it because of the amount of money you're spending?

If so, I would say as long as you aren't spending beyond your means or living at home forever leeching off of your parents to afford these things, then I wouldn't read too much into what they think.

I use to be the only bagaholic amongst my friends and family, now I can say ALMOST no one complains about my habit. But what I would say to you is that think about what you are going to buy and if you are really going to use it much, in plain, make sure what you buy is worth the expense. You will learn this the more you buy and understand what works for you. Good luck on future posts.

I suspect people may shut up if and when we decide to hand down one of our handbags. Trust me, after that, they'll be lining up at our doors for more, and it will be another kind of grief!

I see it among my kid's peers. They'll complain about the hobbies he has or things he does. When he gives away a toy or kit he would like another child to have, all of a sudden, they start coming around asking him what else he's got for them. It's about having or not having and they all want!

Most of my friends enjoy shopping and buying stuff as much as me. The ones who don't appreciate my collection. My husband doesn't mind, he says as long as it makes me happy, he's happy (you know the motto: Happy Wife, Happy Life)
However, my sister thinks it's a total waste of money, but loves the handb me downs, same goes for my mom. Hypocrites!

My mum doesnt know exactly how much my handbags cost, she doesnt really understand why I spend so much money on them but she realises that shed rather spend her money on other stuff like cars and music which I didnt. Although she does know im saving for a Chanel and hasnt said anything! My dad doesnt have a clue, he doesnt approve of designers and thinks a plastic bag can do just as good a job  and is horrified when I say oh they cost £50 (thankfully he lives in the Canary Islands so upto date fashion isnt something he comes across!!). My boyfriend knows how much I spend, doesnt really approve but lets me get on with it. My friends think im crazy but always ask about my new bags and love to look at them! My male (straight) manager finds the whole prospect amusing and always knows when I have a new handbag and thinks I should open up a handbag shop!!

I've had endless conversations, or make that fights, about bags I haven't even bought. They don't mind me looking at bags online, but when if I tell them that I'm planning on buying one they FREAK OUT! They just think it's a waste of money and that I should save for a car or just save them for later. If I just mention that I want to buy a bag they just go mental, haha. I just don't think it's fair that they should decide what I can or cannot spend my money on, when I've worked really hard to earn it. By the way, I'm 17 (turn 18 in two weeks) and live with my parents but I don't think that should make a difference. I've worked so hard to save a lot of money for my vacation (I'm going to New York, different places in California, Las Vegas etc. for almost four weeks this summer) and I don't see why it's such a big deal if I decide to spend 1/5 on an Alexander Wang Rocco.

Something that's kinda strange, though is that a couple of weeks ago I walked up to my mom and said "Mom, I've decided to buy this bag and they've put it on hold for me at Barney's. I know how you and dad feel about me spending this much money on a bag, but in the end this is my decision to make", and could see that she didn't agree at first, but neither of them have commented on it.

Wow, that was a long story, haha. Guess I just needed to let my frustration out.
