Ever purged your collection in pursuit of one bag? How did it go?

I had about 10 MJ handbags (Stam, single, 2 Blake's, 2 multi pockets and Elise, Stella and 2 wallets)- I purged in order to buy a Celine small luggage- and then DH's hours were cute at work and instead of buying the bag surprised the family with 5 days in Disneyland :-)

Thank you :). To this day best trip ever!! So memorable. My kids were 5 & 7 at the time and they still talk about it today. We did everything we usually don't do- ate at restaurants inside, bought a whole bunch of souvenirs from the park- and thoroughly enjoyed the 5 days. Dh never focused on his work and when we came back he had a better job offer 3 weeks later. So the purge was TOTALLY WORTH IT! :D

I'm bumping this thread...

I want to do this but it scares the flapjacks out of me. I love that I have a nice purse collection (I'm constantly buying AND selling, so it's a revolving door of bags) and it's kind of "my thing"... but I've found myself coveting 2 bags in a price range that I have never ventured into before. 2.5 times what I paid for my current most expensive bag, infact. I don't have the money to just buy them willy nilly... but if I sold off a chunk of my collection, I could have them. Would I be happier? Or would I feel bad that I have a lot less bags? I really don't know!

I own roughly 55 bags (not including small evening bags and random no name totes)... which is clearly INSANE... but oh my, it's hard to part with them.

What two bags were you thinking of? Are they two from your signature? I think it could be a good idea, but it might be good to start small, with things that you think you could do without, and without any regrets.

Yes... The LV Empreinte and the Chanel GST. I'm obsessed. I just want to start with one, the LV. Cannot get it out of my head.

sounds like you should go for it! both are beautiful bags. i admit that i've been thinking about chanel lately too. considering saving up for a vintage flap, since that's more in my comfort price range. i have a few bags that i think i will purge.

OMG! I recently did a purge and it was GREAT! I was in a similar position...had about 60 bags (not including totes, clutches, and evening bags) and was looking to add. My biggest problem was that I didn't have room in my closet to add any more! Here are my tips:

1. Don't worry about what you are going to get....yet. Just focus on the purge for now.
2. Go through your bags and make 3 piles: bags you can't imagine parting with, bags you're on the fence about, and bags you're OK with getting rid of. I ended up with piles of about 25, 6, and 29, respectively, on the 1st pass.
3. Sleep on it! Don't do anything for a few days. Revisit the piles, move things around if the feeling moves you.
4. Don't get rid of ANYTHING you're even remotely on the fence about--that way there's no regrets later.
5. Check eBay completed auctions, consigners, etc....get some average selling prices, then ask yourself if you are willing to sell for those prices. Case in point: I have a LE Dior saddle bag and don't use it...but they aren't bringing much, so I decided I'd rather have it than a few hundred dollars.
6. Sell! It feels great to have the $ going in your account and the space in your closet.
7. Buy! And buying felt great, too, since it was totally guilt free! I was able to get 2 new BV's and an LV wallet after my purge.

It was such a great experience I'm actually thinking about doing another round of purging...just need to find the time!

GOOD LUCK! :)

I love the flap bags, they are so timeless, classy and beautiful... but I just carry too much for one to ever be practical for me (thus my desire for a GST!). Well, I could probably make do with a vintage JUMBO flap but those are pretty up there in cost, too.

wow, sounds like your purging went great! love bv. good tips too.

the gst is a great bag too. some of the vintage bags can be pretty hefty in price. i think i may get a smaller flap more for special occasions (and the price is much more doable), but i love the vintage jumbos too.

i have done a few big purges, but my numbers always seem to creep back up. i just counted and i'm at 25 now (more than i thought :p), and have 3 that i'm planning to get rid of, which would take me down to 22, including some smaller bags/clutches and vintage bags i got for pretty cheap. i'd like to get a little lower but will start slow.

Go for it!

I started my purge and upgrade cycle 5 years ago. I bit the bullet and sold a load of clothes, shoes, and things lying around the house over a 3 month period, and made enough to pay for a Chanel 2.55 out right.

3 years later I had grown my collection of Chanel and sold all of these and some LV to fund a growing Hermes collection. I even made a profit on a couple of them!

I now try to stick around the 5 bag mark plus one evening clutch.

It works for me, and I really don't use more than 5 on rotation if I'm honest! It sounds weird but I'm actually happier with fewer bags, as they all serve specific purposes. Previously I had lots, but they weren't quite right for what I needed.

A tough 1 in 1 out policy stops me buying any more bags for the time being. Hermes are so expensive, that they have to earn their keep in my closet.

So I would sell those you don't love and focus on raising enough cash to fund your dream bag.

even if i want to, i don't think i can do it. i am trying to sell off my YSL chyc long wallet which i only bought months ago, i am already selling it quite cheaply (almost half price) but still no takers. i have the full packaging including receipt from the store :(
