If you go for a yellow diamond, radiant and cushion cuts are the best to bring out the color.

Are these classy? The reason why I thought yellow gold is better is because she is a bit warmer in skin tone. She has a year round summer tan! But I love how crisp the platinum looks.

Also. She is a gloves girl. She wears leather gloves and I feel a big high set ring would interfere. What do I do about this?
anything Leon Mege is classy:D

Christine LOVES yellow diamonds. She was watching gossip girl (I know, a grown woman) and was FAWNING over the brown haired girls ring from that prince guy.

I was snooping (forgive me) in her drawer to see if I could pull out any more personality pieces to share with you guys and I find a Cartier catalogue that I didn't know she had. I looked at a bookmarked page and lo-and-behold, this is what I found.

Next to the picture it said "with a yellow diamond." I think she was hoping I would find this LOL.

I personally associate pear shaped jewels with royals. Its always on their tiaras. Maybe I am crazy! Maybe a pear will help her not be another cookie cutter woman - which she is not.

-- The idea of an emerald is glamorous but I feel like its so trendy. I did massive googling and its on the fingers of all these hollywood ladies. She is not a trendy person - she wears what is timeless and what will last forever - with a few pieces give or take.

Right now, I really wish I were the woman in this situation. This is getting to be super hard.

OHH one more note - I would also like to avoid halo rings like the plague.

- K, how do I attach a photo?

haha you've got a great hint there! what cut diamond was the one she noted "with a yellow diamond" ? best of luck to you!!! you sound like a very attentive boyfriend, she is lucky and I'm sure she will be thrilled with the perfect ring that you pick out :smile1:

Well thank you so much - now, I just need you to tell her that :p

It was a HUGE pear cut. It had diamonds along the band on all 3 sides - it was nice but it looked like a real sparkly attention getter.

For a pear solitaire, do you recommend a certain size point and above? I googled some pictures and noticed the small ones look a little underwhelmed. She has slender fingers and her hands are a decent size. I checked her gloves and they say 7 1/2 (I dont know what that means) and I know her ring size is 5 1/2. Where should I look to not overwhelm nor underwhelm her hand? I want to be luxurious without being distasteful.

I think you cannot go wrong with a 2 ct. If your social circle wears big stones, then a 3 ct won't look too over the top in her eyes.

I have a three stone that totals just over 2 cts, with the center being 1.06 carats. Since my ring size is a size 3, the stones cover my ENTIRE finger. Side stones take up finger real estate, and if you do a custom solitaire (it sounds like you don't need much help now that you know what she wants), the thinner the band the more the stone stands out in contrast.

Not in my price range but WOW, look at this. This is more like it!

For something of this calibre, do you recommend going to a non-named jeweller and looking for a VVS1 + diamond? Would I be able to get something huge at a cheaper price for good quality?

I have VVS diamonds and I love how clear they are. People will tell you that nobody notices clarity, but I've gotten quite a few unsolicited compliments on how clear/clean my rocks are from strangers and acquaintances!

What kind of budget are you playing around with? Over $50k? Under $100k?

Sounds like you don't really know what cut or color to go with. I think you should go with your GF and do some "window shopping" to see what cut excites her. Pear, emeralds, rounds, radiant, etc.. are all different under the light. Remember, she'll be wearing this ring forever so it's best that's she's happy whenever she looks at it.

For emerald cut it's best to go big.

I saw this thread and the end result from a fellow tPFer. You may end up going the same route.

I know you don't like halos and may want to keep it simple. It's a good start. :smile1: If you go with a non-brand name, YES, you could buy this for a lot cheaper for an equal or better quality. It's best to see the diamond in person. They look different under natural lighting, rather than relying on a piece of paper such as EGL or GIA. Good luck!!

I just want my woman to have a show stopper (whilst being tasteful and non-Kardashian).

What do I do if she decides she likes something non-traditional? What if she goes the Princess Kate route and gets a huge gemstone? I am kind of opposed to that - I think it should be a clean diamond or a yellow one. How do I get in to that? I feel like emeralds, rubies and sapphires are just found at any local who-ha of a store and are not really 'bridal' (if it were not for the history, I do not think that Princesses rock would be suitable) but that is just me.

I am just stressing possibilities!

That appears to be a radiant. And you can't go wrong with Harry Winston!!!

Depending on your budget (as in you really have a loosely defined budget), you cannot go wrong with a huge rock from one of the big jewelry designers. You're undoubtedly paying a mark up, but I'm sure your fiancée will enjoy the various perks like free cleanings and servicing from a reputable company. You can definitely get a quality stone elsewhere but if you can afford the fancy packaging too, why not?
