its soooooo beautiful. I couldn't pass her up. one more... just one more I'm bidding on, on my hook an I'm gonna sit down somewhere... thank you

repeating the mantra *I don't need every bag I love in every color*

Yesterday I carried my Dooney Florentine Aston Tote in Chestnut.
Of course, I got a few drops of water on it while washing my hands.
I'm happy to report that the handbag is fine and after it dried, there are no spots.

I've had good luck with black, dark brown, and navy Florentine
surviving water spots without incident. I haven't been as lucky with
other colors, even my red Flo bags seem to retain water marks.

I'm happy there are no spots. The only Florentine I own is my red Toscana satchel and that leather (as you know I've posted in the past) seems to do well when wet. I had a red Florentine pocket satchel but I gifted it before I moved and it had not gotten wet before then.
I'm still longing for a red Florentine micro satchel but it'll probably be a while before I get one. It's just not practical for me now.

RN: my red Toscana has water spots! I'm glad yours had stood up better.
The first time I used my Red Toscana I got some water on it and the spots have
never gone away.

Chestnut seems to do very well with not water spotting. I’m glad your tote is not spotted. I think chestnut will be my go to for rainy days. Was misting/ raining here, pulled out the chestnut satchel, and no rain spots. I was not willing to risk my navy birthday bag…
sunny for the rest of the week and moving back into my birthday bag. I absolutely LOVE her… I can’t seem to leave her alone.

is toscana like alto leather? Are you able to buff out scratches from toscana leather?

Dang! I'm sorry to hear that. I would have recommended red Toscana to someone if they were looking for a worry free red Florentine bag. I'll have to add a disclaimer that it could get spots.
Mine has been in pouring rain and there are no spots.

Here's my post when we got caught in rain:
Flo and I got caught in the rain yesterday morning. We walked about 4 blocks. She looks scary when she's wet, but she dries off well! It's raining in SF again today. (I'm happy because we need rain!) Olivia is hanging in my sister's closet and I can hear her calling, "Put me in Coach! Put me in!" If I go out today, I'll carry Olivia.
Also, I know a lot of women don't like the strap on this bag because it's not leather. When I bought it I didn't care because I said I wasn't going to use the strap much anyway. (I rarely use the strap on Olivia.) But the strap is so comfortable on my shoulder I use it 80% of the time. I'm loving the strap!

When the Toscana collection was introduced, it was called Florentine Toscana.
However, I think the leather is treated differently. The Toscana leather looks more
like Alto leather, you cannot buff out scratches. I think the surface of the Toscana either
has a very light treatment of some kind or it's been buffed. Toscana handbags also seemed
to be more structured than Florentine.

Does the Toscana scratch easy like Florentine? I’ve noticed my nails scratch my Florentine, and I had no idea I scratched it. Thank goodness they buff out. I wanted the alto arietta when the price was so low for Labor Day. It’s a beautiful bag. But I saw the peg fastener closure and watched YouTube videos on it, I saw the nail marks left at the closure. So I let it go….

I see they have the Tilton on ild in 2 colors. Way more than I paid for the Labor Day sale. Im glad that I pre ordered the navy Tilton and was able to get it at that Labor Day sale price. Says it’s still processing so fingers crossed it comes next month with no issues.

I won both of my bids and one bag will be here today. The other maybe saturday. Both are kinda hard to find. I haven’t seen many up for sale. They both appear to be in great condition and they hit that sweet spot price for me. Was a real nail biter with the crimson, but it was meant for me to have.

LJ in your collection, past and present, have you purchased a bag you love, works for you in 4 different colors? The mantra isn’t working. The color is beautiful, perfect for fall and winter. I know I would carry it. I’m hesitating because of these 2 bags plus the Tilton coming. awaitng your advice

Yes, I have purchased more than 1 handbag in more than 4 colors! Sometimes even a variety of shades of a color (like multiple shades of blue- navy, royal, light, turquoise).
And I've done it more than once. For some reason, at the time, it was important for me to have the color and shade that perfectly matched items in my wardrobe.
I realize that was not necessary.... styles have changed as have my fashion needs.
But in some styles I have a rainbow of colors.

But at a higher level.... If you are certain the style of handbag really works for you,
I see nothing wrong with purchasing multiple colors. Just don't go down
the rabbit hole of multiple shades of the same color. And be sure you have carried
the handbag style enough to know it really works for you. And keep your multples to
1 or 2 styles, the ones you reach for most days of the week.

I'd categorize a handbag collection by function.... work handbags (which may include totes), weekend /casual or errand handbags, nicer going out handbags, and maybe even
dressier handbags (depending on your lifestyle). Each category might have mulitple
styles. For some categories you want to have multiple color covered.... but not in each
style in that category. Does that make sense?

Congratulations on winning your bids... on finding the treasures and the right prices.

My goodness. Please don’t hurt the bag lol. It looks awesome. Your patina is fabulous. thank you for that. It’s awesome it doesn’t rain spot. How long have you had it? Do you keep it in its dust bag when not using it?
No Toscana bags were hurt in this photo shoot.
I received it in November, 2016. It is a 2016 Christmas gift from my DD, but she let me carry it before Christmas. I carried it every day for about 4 1/2 months, then 2-3 times a week for about 2-3 months. I was spending half the week in SF and I finally had to admit it was too heavy to carry on my walks, so I only carried it the days I was in Oakland with the family, driving or riding in my DD's car. I also used it as a carry on bag once but it was heavy. It survived being shoved under the seat in front of me with no marks.
When I stopped carrying it I hung it on a Clipa purse hook in my oldest GDD's closet, no dust bag. In 2021 the family moved when I was staying with my sister in SF. They packed my bags in a box with no dust bags and my Toscana bag was almost at the bottom of the box. It was pushed in from being in th box, but no marks or scratches. It's held up very well!

Water spots and Florentine and Toscana handbags....
really a mystery to me. In my experience... some bags have
survived water spots with no remaining evidence and others still have
spots long after the water has dried.

I don't know if it's the specific piece of leather and how it was manufactured
(dyes and process), or the mineral content of the water that dripped on it, or the color of the bag, or even the life history of that specific handbag (how much has it been
handled, was it every conditioned or treated with water repellant)?
Every piece of leather is unique...from start to finish. Even details of the
tanning and dying process can vary, especially with vegetable tanning and
more natural dyes. We often see color variation from batch to batch, and
differing thickness of the leather, or pebbling. Why should we be surprised
that different bags react differently to water spots?

And that's not even getting into the discussion of marketing terminology...
smooth or vachetta leather, undyed, natural, or dyed! Even a pebbled leather
handbag which is very water resistant my show water spots on
the trim that is smooth vachetta leather. If the vachetta is undyed,
the spots are obvious. But even dyed vachetta trim can show spots,
depending upon how dark the dye color.
