"Don't buy clothes, save your money for jewelry"

I totally agree, I noticed that everytime I buy new clothes, I either hardly wear them and sits in the closet until it doesn't fit anymore or it goes out of style quick. But jewelry, no matter how long I've had it becomes more precious to me. I'm also like swanky, I don't really care to get stuff I won't use, I'd rather save up for that ONE special piece.

I've become very interested in this way of living, I'm starting to realise (duh!) that traditionally, this is what women did. It's only fairly recently that designer bags, shoes and accessories have become the areas in which to spend serious money and that most women under the age of 35 are no longer buying serious jewelry.
I'm still thinking about this recent trend and what I will/plan to do once I am out of uni and have my own money to spend but I will keep an eye on this thread.

I have bought some pieces for myself and others I have received as gifts. I view jewellery as an extension of my wardrobe - it should all be classic, transcend trends and should be of very high quality.

I have a jewellery list of pieces I want to accumulate over time - it makes jewellery purchasing more directed and less haphazard. Though some pieces on it won't be mine for a long long time yet...sigh...

that makes sense, there are so many clothes right now, you can get expensive looking clothes for less.

I think ima take that advice and go get me some jewelry. it would be nice to have something nice of my own, instead of stealing my mothers. LOL

I believe the best time to buy clothes is when they go on sale...unless it's an absolute must-have and classic that won't hit the sale rack. Otherwise, I stick to classic jewelry.....and classic bags. ;) Jewelery is part of my outfit which I will pass along to my two boys?.....that is if they marry when they grow up.

I prefer SOs to give me jewelry ... I really can't see myself wearing anything substantial until I am married. Just personal preference. Although I do think about buying myself some pieces once in awhile ... because it is a lot easier than waiting!

While wise words they are, I would edit her comment to: "Don't buy clothes, save your money for accessories" because I feel like accessories can make or break an outfit, dress it up/down, and anyway you like ^_^

I'm 21, and dress simply & cute, but do it through my accessories. Clothes go in and out of style, but my handbags and jewelry can be passed down to my children...

I agree to an extent... I buy clothes that will last me years like a classic DVF dress and wonderful wool trouser etc! However I always buy them on sale. However, all of my jewelry comes from DH but I am really understated when it comes to jewelry. I am a big band person like I have 2 eternity bands as my wedding rings and they total 6 cts and I love them!!! they are really simple and elegant at the same time... Lately I have been buying doezen of pearl! Especially black! I agree jewerly will hold its value in the long run!

I refuse to choose. I own beautiful diamond jewelry (earrings, bracelets, rings, necklaces, pendants and watches). And I also own classic well cut, well made designer clothing that compliments my jewelry. I buy quality as opposed to quality and do not clothes shop as much as some of my friends who shudder at spending more than $50 on a pair of trousers. I have clothing 5 years or older that never fail to get me a dozen compliments each time I wear them. And averaged over 5 year I consider the money spent initially to be money well spent. However, I never buy clothing at MSRP because I know if I wait long enough that $1200 pair of cashmere pants can be had for $300 and that although $300 is a lot those pants will last for years.

I don't subscribe to buying jewelry over clothes. My style and outlook, are probably why. I don't need more than a few pairs of earrings (pearl and diamond studs, hoops, dangle), so I don't see the need to buy any more. Same with shoes and clothes. I don't wear necklaces or rings. I have 1 watch and that works for me. I do have to say though, that my mom was a gem collector and I learned so much at her knee; which is the biggest reason why I won't purchase diamonds. The few I have are family pieces; the meaning behind them is much more important to me than their market value.

Honestly, do what works for you and don't be bothered by what others may do.

It is really a question of what you can afford, isn't it?

As for me, I'm in my 50's..and all the investment pieces I bought way back when, don't exist in my closet. My style has simplified over the years to a minimalist look: with fabulous jewelry. Jeans, a white shirt, red flats AND FABULOUS JEWELRY makes me look like a million.

I read how Swanky likes her DH to buy her the jewels. I have always bought my own jewelry because when spending that much money, I get what I truly want and will cherish and use. I think jewelry is soo personal.

So ladies, go for the accessories. Have a great bag, great shoes, great watch and jewels. You will feel like a million.

HA! my mom always tells me to buy jewelry instead of purses and designer jeans. I completely agree but i have no desire to have a safe and dresser full of jewelry because if someone broke into your house they would steal every piece of jewelry in sight, but wont even touch your clothes. I think having a reasonable amount of each is ok....
