Excuse me for butting into your conversation ladies ......
May I ask how you would clean off/reduce/remove that 'shiny spray' ?

It depends upon what type it is and on which leather. for instance some are acrylic based like using mop and glow on your floor it lasts for a while and then it wears off and some are wax based like spray shoe polish.. often times and good cleanser can break it down...
some shine sprays are made by Melitonian and Feibings and Master leather for instance.. also there are no buff instant shine polishes ... And I don't know what they are made of ..
.
Im only guessing because I can not see what the poster is asking about...

A shiny spray would explain the unnatural look. Did not know there was such a thing. Like Millicat above, I'd be interested in some removal ideas. Thanks!

Hi there,
I would NOT use a oil or grease on a dyed barenia bag... clarify what type of dye was used... and by whom...
To use Hemes balm on barenia that's been dyed is to end up with a mess...
Scratches wont go away by slathering on grease... conditioners can make scratches look less noticeable but they don't make them go away...
I'll check back to hear more ...

Thank you for the advice Doc, I haven't bought the bag as yet ,it's dark blue Barenia .

Thanks Doc! i will do just that! Anyway here she is! I just got her and she is so pretty! The shade of the vert claire green is :love eyes: My H collection is filled with lots of basic and natural colours like Black and Golds, so this green is such a great pop of color that I'm hooked now. I am gonna inject more color into my H collection from now on! :D The colours i have my eye on next are anemone or blue atoll. Thanks once again for your valuable advice on how to care for my Hermes bags. I really appreciate it loads

OOh what a beauty! Congratulations!
Thanks for showing! Enjoy in good health!

Just wanted to say, Docride, that I checked out your blog from your signature and I think it's great! I used to be fairly active on the Coach Rescue and Rehab thread, and I have definitely benefited from your tips. I especially liked your wisdom on the blog about how a bag should be viewed from 3 feet way, not under a loupe. I was guilty of this over the weekend - buffing up an essentially new bag that had been stored away in a closet. It had a ding on the piping simply from storage! And I realized that a bag is going to get some wear and tear no matter what.

Just curious Doc, but what are your thoughts of using apple care cleaning products on a vintage hermes? Also do you know why the Hermes spa does not clean the handle of the bags sent to them? Thank you

Hi there, Im not familiar with their products and because not all products are correct for every leather I would say simply this test a small hidden are and wait for 24 hrs to make sure you are happy with the results before doing the whole bag :) OK?
Regarding Hermes and cleaning the handles.. gosh I don't know why exactly.. sorry
I do know that handles with color change and or color loss is not the same as needing a cleaning...often times someone thinks te handles are dirty when in fact the staining and color loss isn't going to be improved with a cleaning... maybe that helps?
They don't clean the interiors because its called "personal space "

Hi Doc!
I hope you can give me some advice :) Just bought a K28 Barenia/ toile bag at a good price, as it needs some TLC. I am hoping this is fixable, but I have never had this leather type before. Maybe the best idea is to bring it to Hermes, but wanted to see if you have some advice on a leather cleaner or something similar which could remove/even out spots? What kind of stains do they look like to you?
Also, there is a small spot on the canvas/toile part, is that also something that can be cleaned?
TIA :)

Hi Doc, thank you for your response. I will try the product and wait 24 hours to see if it is safe to use.

You are so informative :)

Hi there,

I'm looking to purchase my first Hermes bag, and have a question about a vintage porosus croc Kelly. The seller states that the leather is in beautiful condition, but that the flap, straps, and handle need to be changed and some seams are disjointed. While I know that you don't comment as to cost of Hermes spa services, does this sound like something more simple or substantial? The bag is very well priced, but I'm trying to figure out if it's worth fixing or passing and waiting for something in better condition.

Thanks!!

Hi there this bag is not barenia, its vache naturelle those spots are most likely water spots. They can sometimes be improved a bit with a wet wash cloth I know yikes right? Well you can use this on unfinished leathers.... but many times the spots will simply remain and the hopes of improvement will may sometimes be found as the bag darkens in color as the leather patinas.

Hi there, great question. Id be happy to look at the bag for you. A key thing to keep n mind is that if some parts of a bag are badly cracked then other parts may be weakend also suffice to say sometimes its not just a case of replacing straps or a handle at all... often times the rest of the bag is too weak to support the new stitches needed for repairs.. this is the most important thing to keep in mind... will this bag be sturdy enough to be repaired?
