Hi Doc,

I don't know if the photos in the listing will be sufficient, but I've got my mind set on a used Jypsière and this one caught my eye. However, the listing photos show some funny stuff, FP says "smoothing" on one side of the flap and some mysterious white spots in the creases. Any advice as to whether or not these are issues that could be fixed, symptoms of previous repairs, etc?

Thank you!

Hi cool bag color is very attractive as wel. White spots looks like on surface not a big issue should be fixable , smooth areas are wear or press marks probably these will stay , color loss rub spots on front panel near toggle will remain unless color restored . Does not look obviously previously color restored from the photos to my eyes.
I hope this helps ?
All the best doc

Hi Doc.
So I picked up this vintage piece, 1997 Havane, said to be Veau Rodeo. I actually love love her well worn brown leather and casual vintage vibe. So the scratches on the leather and general worn look are what I love and don’t concern me.
I would like to have the shoulder straps, handle, and leather closure straps Spa’d or repaired or replaced. The lock and clochette didn’t come with the bag, am I able to have them replaced? I’m attaching a few pics here that are areas of concern and I wonder if this is a bag that is worth the time, effort, and cost to breath new life into? I am well within my return window so if you advise against the piece no worries but I’d love to save and enjoy wearing her for years to come if at all possible. (She was a great price too)
Thanks for any advice you can give :flowers:

Hi
To my eye It seems functionality quite good , are there cracks or tears or stiffness I can’t not ascertain from these photos which you have experienced in handling this bag?
yes you can order a clochette lock and keys from Hermes.Or hunt around for used ones in secondary market.
Personally I really like your fab vintage find congratulations!

Hi Doc, thank you! I love her vintage casually cool thing. So the bag is soft all over, no stiffness. The leather closure, on the back of those straps is very dry, peeling. F6470841-BCEE-42D6-9599-8935410A9920.jpeg
There’s light splitting or peeling or whatever you would call it(?) where the stitching is at the top side panel. There’s a couple instances of this. 718F7F18-C5DC-44DA-82F7-85AB2FBA4329.jpeg

I’d really love to maybe have her restitched and reglazed. I think that, with a new clochette and lock, would be perfect.
Do you think just the glaze and stitching will give me years of use with this one?
Also what do you recommend for perfume smells?
Will they be able to replace the backpack straps? They’re not leather.

Lastly, I can’t find much on this leather type, can you direct me to info for Veau Rodeo?
Thanks as always!

I’d take it to Hermes and see what they say …. Regarding the could of dropped stitches I don’t see those as seriously important flaws nor that the bag will fall apart because of them. The resins/ or glazing is also mostly cosmetic. The cracks near those stitches holes do give me pause more than other areas.
veau Rodeo if that’s what this is ( I’m not fully convinced, it could be veau gulliver ? )But either way this is a fairly oily ( inside the leather ) finished leather ( other finished leathers include for example clemence, evergrain, togo, etc) these modern tanned finished leathers are low maintenance. Light lotion type conditioner is most often all that’s required if the bag is in need of some care. However , if you want Hermes to do repairs just don’t muck with it abd bring it straight to Hermes let them do what’s needed for you
All the best

That sounds like a good plan. I’m not sure of the leather either, it’s very well worn but as a backpack the bottom hasn’t gotten nearly as much useBEA0962F-221B-4B29-B0E6-819F6AECF07A.jpeg
and the grains are so large when compared the the rest of the bag.
Can you tell me what could happen with the splits at the stitches? There’s only a couple and they’re fairly superficial. I’m wondering if after spa I might be able to fill them in or perhaps seal them? I will probably only send it to spa once to retain the vintage look.
Thanks!

Hi all,

I have just bought a vintage (from the 1960s) box Kelly. I live in the UK so Blackrock leather n rich is not available here for conditioning. Any recommendations for people living in the UK? Has anyone tried Saphir Renovateur? Any other tips? Photo because sharing is caring )) 20211027_091621.jpg

Hi there
I no longer recommend black rock or obenaufs for box calf as too many folks ended up using too much product and having sticky results .
The brands Saphir , Kelly’s and Wolly are available in the UK
I have a thread with leather care recommendations here on TPF in the Hermes Reference section.
All the best, doc

Hi there , splits at the stitches ? Can you show me a close up ? Dropped stitches with intact needle holes are not worrisome as you can restitch with fresh thread

Hi Doc, the splits are small and superficial but if they could effect the bag over time I might want to return it and search for a better one. Thanks! I circled the splits in these pics there’s only a couple and the leather does not feel dry or hard. EBEC7D51-5237-4032-AD92-5618F85E9202.jpeg
