Hi, Doc -

I did a search in this thread for “wine” and nothing came up.

My best friend is away and was eating at a restaurant - the waiter spilled a glass of red wine on her brand new Barenia Faubourg B30.

My heart hurts for her! I suggested she call our boutique (which has a lovely craftsman) or go to the local boutique where she is, but I don’t know if she has been able to do anything.

For future reference (for us wine lovers [emoji6]), what would you suggest if you were in that situation? With a wine spill - what would you do immediately?

Thank you!!!

I’d wash the barenia! Start rinsing it immediately with water......
Good luck [emoji256]

It’s hard to say exactly what’s going on here... I don’t think this will be an easy do it yourself project . Might be colored polish or it might be someone got over zealous with cleaning ... or some bad lighting making it look more noticeable than it is in real life. Red bags can be harder than most colors in my opinion.....
A skilled restoration person should be able to sort this out.
All the best doc
Thank you Doc for your advice!

Hi there,
I have a thread in the Hermes reference section with lists of care products and instructions
Suffice to say you can use what’s recommended for semi-finished leathers like swift and veau gulliver or the one’s recommended for finished leathers like Togo and Clemence. All the best doc
Thanks Doc!

Hi Doc,
I recently bought a vintage Evelyne PM in Barenia. While I am overall very happy with her condition, there are two areas I am unsure of.

a) There are some white-ish areas on one of the side panels and
b) The front side close to right side of the punched H / ellipse and above is slightly different in color. It is difficult to photograph and best seen from a side/top view. When looking straight at the bag it is barely noticeable. The area seems somewhat lighter?

I ordered some Lexol PH wipes through the evil bay, but that is all I have for the time being. The bag does not look dirty to me or in desperate need of something, I am just not sure what these white stripes and the area with the different color are and if / how I need to take care of them. I don't want to "kill her with kindness / overprotection" as you mentioned in an earlier post.

Thanks in advance for your feedback and best regards from Germany.

Hi
I’d just gently clean it with a luke warm water soaked and squeezed out not dripping wet old washcloth. With a light hand pressure using your wash cloth use a small over lapping circles type technique see if the white discoloration is just something on the surface that will lift off. Note you may not see your results until the leather dries. So do not start scrubbing back and forth with strong [emoji123] pressure or panicked intent.
I would not use any product on top of this at this point. First rule out if it can be simply wiped off.
Good luck [emoji256] doc

Good morning!
I have tried to carefully treat the side and front panel with the damp washcloth method yesterday. The white areas on the side are completely gone, thank you!
When I worked on the front panel close to the H, I noticed that the area with the similar color where not soaking up the water in the same manner as the rest of the leather. It seems sth. works as a barrier between the water and the leather in this area. I have taken a photo to illustrate what I mean.

So I decided to carefully keep going, thinking maybe whatever "blocks" or sits on top of the Barenia can be washed off carefully.

After drying the respective part of the leather looks more than the rest. It is still there, but whatever surface change this is, has become less noticeable.
IMG_0950.JPG
(I believe it is most visible in this photo in the lighter area on the bottom right that looks like the light was being reflected differently)

While it is less noticeable now which I am happy about, I am unsure how to proceed. I had intended to finish off my cleaning routine applying a small bit of Saphire cream for greasy leather. But now I am unsure now if this will not "seal in" whatever works as a "water repellent" / causes the leather to still look slightly different.
This morning I did a test in the same corner and the water was still blocked in the same way when I used my damp cloth.

What could I do now? Leave as is and use Sapphire once?
Try to wash it of with a damp cloth carefully once again?
Use a different product?

Thanks again in advance for your input.

How does it look now it’s dry?

The photo on the bottom shows how it looks dry.
It is still somewhat visible but a bit better. When I dab the area with a damp cloth, the water still does not reach the leather at first, just like the first time.
Sorry; I am sure I have explained this in a cryptic manner, my English is limited.

The barenia looks good, it’s not going to be perfect I don’t know what was in the bag you could wash it again and see if it helps.
Good luck

Hi docride!

I was so excited to find this thread. I love vintage bags and am so glad someone else has a passion for fixing them. I noticed today when I was carrying my Kelly sellier 35 in Veau grains couchevel that there is a slight crack on the side. I am not sure when it happened or how but I was wondering do I leave it be? Do I do something to it? It’s not very deep but I don’t want it to continue to spread.

Also on that note I don’t really condition this type of leather- should I?

Thank you!
