Hi doc,

I’m interested to purchase a vintage box calf mini Kelly, and noticed some veining (?) on the leather. Is this from the leather “shriveling” up? Not sure if it’s because the bag was over-moisturized and this caused a negative effect on the leather? Or is this completely normal and just a characteristic of the leather used?

Thank you
Hi there , if this is box calf then it’s become dry ,shrunken and damaged at some point . However , let’s see a few more photos like close up of stitching , the stamp and the bends on the flap sides ?

Hello again Doc! :)

Thank you for all your posts on vache natural care, they really helped me get my VN HAC in great shape when it arrived!

Regarding natural Chamonix, what would you recommend, if anything, for waterproofing and conditioning this leather?

Hi
Charmonix can be tricky especially if it’s rouge h so do take care . Rouge h tends to bleed color easily and if you have white stitches they can easily turn pink .
I have a thread which has most all the Hermes leathers and some tried and true
Products to try for each should you do choose

Hi Docride!
I have received this Togo Birkin as a gift - the bag is in wonderful condition all perfect except for there is an area where it looks like the Togo grain texture has been “smeared away”. Tried to capture it as best I can in these photos. It is a strange border that doesn’t look like natural edge wear. It almost looks like something spilled on it then rubbed away the top layer of the grain. Do you think a leather conditioner or cleaner could help? Thank you so much!

Dr ride is the expert here, not me but it looks like a water mark, like someone spilled a water bottle or something inside it and it dried that way
Thank you I really appreciate your input...that's what I thought as well but there is nothing on the inside. So maybe water spilled on the outside? My other thought was maybe the bag was stored in the box without the dust bag and the box lid was smooshed against that corner and rubbed off on the leather somehow 🤷‍♀️. All this speculation led me here to the superhero of leathers Doc Ride!

Hi there
It kinda looks like possible water or liquid damage ?
What does the inside look like ?
My first thought is do not apply a conditioner on top it will most likely not help. Does the leather feel stiffer or different than the rest of the bag ? Does this area smell different?
I’ll check back ..,,I see your reply.

Great questions!
The interior is pretty pristine (see pics). The stain doesn’t seem to seep through to the inside.
There is no smell.
The touch - the area is smoother in comparison to the rest of the bag…the “pebbles” of the leather not as pebbly as the rest of the bag if that makes any sense. But doesn’t feel noticeably stiffer or softer.
Thank you for your time on this you really are amazing with your wisdom 🙏

A lite gentle cleaning not a soaking with a clear clean water damp wash cloth might help … but not by a whole lot . I’d be careful to avoid soaking the whole bag to blend it in . I think your bag is beautiful and if you stand three-5 ft away ( magic this is what other people see when you are carrying it) and look at it in totality hopefully you will see just an awesome gift 🎁!
Sending best regards!

Hi @docride ,
I noticed these tiny dots on a part of my bag, they are visible under bright light and very up close. I started to research further and was told that it’s probably hair follicles. Which made me question authenticity of the bag, as it was not purchased at the boutique. Have you ever noticed hair follicles on Hermes epsom bags or is it something else?

Hey there , yes , I have seen this on authentic Hermes epsom bags. Holes where the hair was removed from the hide ? Quite possibly… sometimes also called pores … and also could be areas where the finish (on finished leather ) had air bubbles which opened …( I’m not sure exactly which is the case here but I have seen this on white/crae Epsom leather in a more recent bag ) either way finished or even unfinished leather can show these holes upon extremely close examination or magnification.
Hope this helps ?

Hello @docride
I’ve noticed these little cracks on ostrich bag I’ve been eyeing. The seller stated brand new but is it possible to have these crack, I am a bit hesitant, if it’s new and is there a way to reverse it to no crack. Thank you so much in advance for your kind advice.
