If it's zipped (not expanded) it fits as a personal item. My typical approach is zipped, purse inside (anywhere from J28 to K35, or more frequently Halzan 31), also along with a bunch of other stuff I might need.

And I always carry an extra in my luggage - if I do carryon-only on the way over, I can check the spinner on the way back and substitute an expanded LC full of goodies for overhead.

(Someday LC will figure out that adding a "sleeve" to fit over a spinner handle is a no-brainer. In the meantime DH and I use luggage "bras" to keep the LCs secure on top of the suitcases.)
I’m totally with you on the usefulness of the travel LC on the return trip; that’s how I discovered it in the first place :graucho: . But I’d always just assumed it would be too big to qualify as a personal item. Believe me, I couldn’t be happier to learn that my assumption was incorrect!

United Airlines website shows the following guideline for personal item:

Your personal item should fit underneath the seat in front of you. The maximum dimensions for your personal item are 9 inches x 10 inches x 17 inches (22 centimeters x 25 centimeters x 43 centimeters).

Perhaps check your airline first to avoid surprises at the gate.

I recently went on a work trip and found the harrods foldable tote bag worked for storing hermes garden file for the flight and during the training on the floor. I liked the handles were long so great to fit over the arm and it could fold down for packing when not in use.If i had one wish to add a top zip to the harrods tote.

Trying to figure out how to fit 2 Kelly 28s, one sellier, one retourné, in a carryon (not a roller suitcase, a second item, my suitcase is full of clothes) with a laptop and the other long-flight needs....I thought I had my bag travel sorted but this one has me stumped.....argh!!!

Put smaller articles of clothing and other things in the bags to save space, if you haven’t already?

i think if your second item is a ‘personal item,’ it may not hold more than one bag and your laptop. If you can repack some socks or underpinnings or jewelry in the one of the Ks, and then roll clothes tightly around the bag, so it won’t be crushed, perhaps one bag could fit in the suitcase? I pack rolled up clothes in travel cubes to compress As much as possible. I eliminate as many on flight needs as possible (BTW) or pack them into the remaining K and nestle that in the personal item.

It probably won’t help you right now, but in the future. if your luggage allowance is two full carryons (not just a personal item) the stuff you mention can easily fit in a piece the size of the soft sided Rimowa weekender (that has a built in sleeve that goes over the handles of the roller. The laptop can slide into the separate outside pocket. the weekender is large, but it can fit under the seat in front or in an overhead compartment of business or first class.

scroll down this link to the bottom for the weekender
