Do you travel with your H bag?

I know it's been discussed over and over again throughout the years whether it's "safe" to travel with your Hermes babies and how to protect them at the airport, inflight, etc.

My question is about whether it's SAFE for me and my contents if and when I travel with my Birkin. This question is specifically for travel next week to Barcelona, Venice and Rome. I was so set on bringing my 30 B until friends started saying "leave your engagement ring and B at home!"

I don't really believe this is the way we must travel, especially to Europe, but I also don't want to be ignorant. I always carry my B with the flap closed so it'd be the same as bringing a tote with a zipper, but tell me ladies. Am I being naive?

I used to live in Spain and absolutely love Barcelona. However, pickpockets are numerous. I would also recommend leaving both very expensive handbags and jewelry at home. Wear a secure cross body toward the front of your body and make sure you are vigilant of it at all times.

I also had my wallet/passport/phone stolen from me (well, from my friend who was holding my items for me temporarily) when I was a teenager in Barcelona.

It can happen to anyone. We picked up an Australian police man returning from a secondment in LA. He had his bag lifted off his shoulder halting a taxi in Barcelona. Lost everything. If it can happen to a big Aussi policeman it can happen to anyone.

Would love to visit Barcelona though. Sounds fabulous! If we were to visit I'd probably take my Kelly Danse and wear it discretely under my coat a small shoulder bad is perfect for travelling and you can whip it out when the occasion fits.

Like any big city that attracts many tourists, you need to be mindful of your belongings. In Barcelona, because we are on the go so much, I usually carry a small chanel seasonal flap because it is lightweight and fits securely under my arm. Barcelona is a beautiful city with much to see. If you are going to be worried about your belongings, don't bring them... It's not worth it. Enjoy your travels!

Thank you all for your comments and sorry to all those that have had stuff stolen. It is a terrible feeling. I think I'm very close to making my decision but I am definitely very much looking forward to every city [emoji574]️[emoji477]️

Giuliana, I definitely put my LC bag with my B/K under the seat in front of me. Just once, I put it in the overhead bin and other passengers literally were trying to stuff their luggage on top of my LC. Of course, I quickly got up and removed my LC and B/K from the overhead bin but I learned my lesson the hard way. My H bag was still in perfect condition but my heart did stop for a brief second during this episode.
I usually just travel with my Evelyne and it's been no problem. I just came back from Tokyo for a wedding and my husband convinced me to take my Birkin. So I stored it in both places-- on the way there I had it under the seat, but on the way back, we were sitting bulkhead and so I had to put it in the overhead bin. My husband filled one part with my soft Vera Bradley carry-on, then right before take-off, he shoved the Vera Bradley down and created space for the Birkin with no squishing. Both ways I used a Longchamp bag to cover -- the convertible one with the zipper from Nordstroms that makes the bag length longer when needed--and it covered the bag great, and is pretty water-resistant. When I wasn't using the bag, it fit great into the hotel safe in its dustbag (it's a 30)

I've traveled with Bs and Ks in Paris, Rome, and Barcelona without problem. I carry a lightweight foldable grocery bag in my H bag and will keep my bag in there on the metro and at busy tourist places. And then I'll pull my bag out and put the grocery bag inside at other places where I feel it's more appropriate like FSH, Chanel and Place Vendome.

I love that you and your husband have an appropriate strategy to ensure your bag is not squished in the overhead bin! That's love! [emoji173]️[emoji5]️

I also travel with Longchamp Le Pliage bags to be more under the radar in particular places with my B inside.

I bought a pre-loved fjord B40 in Tokyo 2 years ago, which I pretty much use exclusively for travel. It fits my blanket, neck pillow, food and everything else I need very well. I bring the dust bag with me and store it in that when on the airplane. Since it's not a brand new bag, I'm not as worried about going through the security machine or getting banged around for a bit. DH always says, I bought it to use, not to stare at in the closet. Only downside of this travel bag is that it's super heavy, but pretty water repellent.

The only time I was really worried was when I went to Nevis and the humidity was very high in the room. The bag lost a bit of its shape and I believe the leather may have gotten stretched from the moisture. :(

Am happy to report that I've now traveled through Barcelona and Venice with B30 with absolutely no issues. I didn't bring B out to La Boqueria in Barcelona. Otherwise, I didn't feel uncomfortable at all having it with me.

Saw an older lady in Venice with a B35 and a cane walking aggressively through busy streets with it only half closed (only the middle part of her flap is over the bag and locked). She had it in her hand (not on her arm) and didn't seem worried at all.

Hope this helps for future travelers!

very helpful thread indeed, as I will be traveling to madrid, barcelona, and various cities in Italy. I am considering taking my B with me but afraid it would be too troublesome... I just ordered an issey miyake bao bao crossbody bag for the trip.

I find that a Kelly works better on trips because it has the shoulder strap. It is also easier for me to put in my tote bag that I carry on the plane. I do take along a black nylon non-branded messenger cross body with a fold over zipper top to use when touring in places where I want to keep a lower profile. Between the two of them, I am covered for any contingency.
