Do you travel with your H bag?

The wife of a gentleman who used to post on tpf had a major problem with customs coming back into the US - over her Birkins. Since then, I carry a copy of the sales receipt for my bags with me if I'm going out of the US. I bought them in the US and sure don't want to pay duty on them due to some over-zealous custom's agent!

Another travel question. Do you carry receipts of your H bags when you travel with them? Last time we went through customs, I had bought my Jige Elan in France and I dutifully paid my import tax in the US, after getting my VAT refund in France. However, you know I've paid once and don't want to pay again! My Birkins are definitely a little used looking, but my Jige is in great shape and I don't want to have to pay VAT or something ridiculous again if I don't produce a receipt. My Birkin I like to travel with also came from a reseller, so I don't have anything other than an Ebay transaction somewhere...anyone have any issues? We do travel a lot.

I think you can show some pictures that you carried the bag last time (if you have laptop or camera beside you). Because I knew a lot of the peoples didnt have the receipt, they bought from reseller, Ebay, friend.......

Silly question but hoping someone can answer this.

How many 30cm birkins do you think one can fit into a regular carry on suitcase(without squishing them)? I'm moving across the country and am hoping to bring my b's with me!

If you must, can pack one in carry on and carry one in an enviorsac over ur shoulders.
Friend can carry more if traveling with you, but will the dorm be secured with so much H present, just concern for general safety ;)

babybaby, in a carry on suitcase?

fashionistaO, I'll have 5-30cm birkins by then so I'll need have them in my carry on suitcase. dbf is helping me move to NYC, but I am not sure how he'll feel about carrying a birkin, hahaha.

As for dorms, I'll be renting an apartment in Manhattan(either a studio or 1 bedroom/1 bath). Wont need to worry about thieving classmates/peers, :D

You just brought up one of my biggest concerns. I'm going to be moving at some point and have a fairly large collection. Do I ship them via Fed X one by one? Let the moving company move them? It's my only real concern with moving. Forget the china and crystal and computers and the jewelry, what about the handbags???

:confused1:

1 not squished at all, 2 slightly squished. I would suggest packing scarves or small jewelry within the bag, which helps prevent further squishing.

Personally I would FedEx overnight fully insured each one separately. Then you don't have to worry about security unpacking them, another passenger jamming something on top of the bag, etc.

I travel with 2 35cm, one in a longchamp I tuck *behind my legs to protect it (and drape a travel blanket over my legs) and then put another in the overhead in a structured LV travel bag. Maybe I already posted that here several months ago? Sorry if I am repeating!

i always travel with H bag to certain country...mostly with sellier kelly (more stiff) or Birkin size 30 (not so heavy)....

i put them inside longchamp bag during rain or x-ray check up at airport. then fold back my longchamp bag and use the hermes bag again for the rest of the day

Audreylita, any way you do it, you must have a full and detailed inventory and insure to the hilt. Particularly if you let them travel with the moving company and you are moving cross country. I have a sizable collection and have moved between continents, countries and cities. For most of my moves, nearly my entire H collection has been packed in special wardrobes and then shipped in the containers along with the rest of our worldly possessions across the high seas and insured at replacement values. Then i hope for the best. One time i airfreighted from 1 country to another, and that cost a double bomb as opposed to a bomb. If you are moving within the US and you don't want to let them go with the movers, i would suggest packing them in several suitcases and using Luggage Forward who will ship them through UPS. I use them to ship luggage when on holiday and they do a good job. Just remember, INSURE! Hope this helps.

I must ask, so sorry, but I wonder if for the price of insurance, would it be worthwhile to fly private, where you can carry all your bags on? I have never had to move a collection before, just a thought.:flowers:

audreylita, I enjoy long distance driving, so for the items that we didn't want to leave our sight, we brought it with us. But, if this isn't for you then fedex is best option with full declaration, overnight.

Unless you are flying short haul where there is a private commercial service like in CA or already have a sunk cost in flying private, insurance would be cheaper. Oh, if you already insure your H bags as part of home or similar policy, you should not assume that it will cover your moving the bags to a new home. You need to read fine print of your current policy and may have to get add on or separate policy.
3 years ago I moved back to the US from overseas and i packed some pieces in suitcases and used the luggage service to send them ahead of me to SF and then they shipped them again from SF to my home on the East Coast. All went fine. I have more faith and confidence in them and UPS than the airlines.
Sorry if I'm going off topic here.
