Do you think it’s hard to go back to purchasing other brands after owning Chanel?

No, most of my bags were chanel until 2008, when I moved to Hermes. But, now that most of my bags are Hermes, I find myself really enjoying a few others like my mens dior adjustable seatbelt strap saddle bag and my Loewe mini puzzle. I also wear a lot of chanel and some H RTW, and it’s nice to break it up with a different bag

No. I’m an LV lover from 30 years ago, and never found Chanel fit my lifestyle until the past couple of years. I love the look of lots of Chanel bags but I don’t find them as functional and low maintenance for the price as LV. So a few Chanel bags Are enough for me, and none of them are classic flaps. I tried Hermes but so far I haven’t gotten that “thrill” that lasted long enough to justify the price. Stranglely I’m finding LV designs becoming more and more functional.

Totally depends on your day to day needs.
I only recently purchased Chanel and I also very much love YSL. But sometimes I need a non luxury bag. Someone recently gifted me a very simple Kate Spade crossbody bag and I was surprised by how functional and comfortable it is. I especially love to use it when I don't want to draw any attention. I also enjoy Coach and Tory Burch for that purpose.

I bought a few Chanel bags 20 years ago (white ceramic chain bowler, metallic leather flap , and a black caviar jumbo shopper) and that was it. I buy mostly their shoes now. I buy what I use so I never resell my bags. Grew up with LV in the household as they were standard workhorse pieces. LV has grown with me. Hermes as a whole does not really jive with my style/personality.

Interesting thought…
I purchased my *first and only* Chanel and thought I had accomplished something, reached purse peace or whatever …haha little did I know that you rareley stop at one Chanel bag

And yes, the whole CC experience is a thing on its own. But I have to admit that I carry my Chanels way less than my LVs. They just don‘t fit into my life, surroundings, social circles etc… the way I wish they would.

For example:
Most of the time I choose a Pochette Metis over my Business Affinity (although they fit the same and are both the same style of bag- flap, crossbody with pocket on the back)
I have Chanel bags I have never used since I have bought them  just enjoy having them, enjoyed purchasing them…
Am I weird?!
Now I am getting more interested in other brands (YSL, Gucci) and I am going back to my first love: LV.

So the short answer is: NO! I like Chanel a lot, but I still love, carry and purchase other brands.

EDIT:
There was definitely a time, when I thought that any other brand wasn‘t worth my money.
If I planned spending 1500€ on a purse, I would immediately think: ‚for the doubled amount I could buy something from Chanel‘.
However, that has changed now…

I’ve heard from a few ladies that it’s difficult because they absolutely fall in love with Chanel and the only other option sometimes is Hermes.

Hermes is the ‘other’ mass crowd (influenced by social media) option for status screaming. There are actually haute maroquinerie brands, other than Hermes, even more reclusive-exclusive aka the ‘either you know it or you don’t‘ types. Chanel is not haute maroquinerie (being a couturier) and the hardware isn’t that special since it is so easy to spot the usual classics.

Even the late Queen Elizabeth II uses Launer, not Hermes or Chanel.

Some of the Hermes bunch on the forum do hold other luxury brands including Chanels , plus share their non-Hermes indulgences which include one of a kind atelier bespoke bags made entirely by hand. Personally, I hold a range of bags myself, not just Hermes or Chanels.

It just depends on whether the person is more style oriented, status oriented or haute maroquinerie oriented. Different people, different styles, different needs.

OMG yes! I eventually got rid of all other branded bags because I felt like they dated too quickly. I just feel that the thing with Chanel is that it never dates (even the older styles). I wouldn’t feel silly carrying any kind of Chanel bag even if it wasn’t the most current style, like the Boy or Gabrielle, as I feel they are all iconic. I feel other brands, even Dior and LV (apart from the Neverfull), have hot bags and then those bags look very dated a year or two later. I want to venture into Hermes and get my first Kelly, as I feel that Chanel and Hermes are the ultimate brands. Having said that, I’ve been coveting a white bag for years now and really want a white classic flap but can’t justify spending that amount of money on a bag that will discolour, so I am considering a YSL or Bottega Jodie.

I agree with this.

These generalities are simply fantasy based. Brand hierarchy (should) only exists in our heads.

I don't have and Moynat, but I have Delvaux and other 'obscure' (non globally exploited) Italian, US, Spanish, Belgium and French brands, and I know @880 has too. Globally there must be the most exquisite bags out there but they are not brand juggernauts, I would love, love, love, a Joseph Duclos Diana. It's great Chanel is still a family-run independent company, but it's HUGE.

I had Chanel before H, but plenty of Gucci and some BV and others after/during buying both. Chanel is not a leather goods specialist, it's a (mostly) women's fashion house. There is very little aftercare, quality control or incentive for better CS. H, BV and Gucci have IME always been excellent in standing by their products, esp. leather.

If people only go to Chanel (which is easy to do) you will only ever know about what Chanel has to offer.

I buy products based on quality, usefulness and aesthetics, and I've a varied life(style) that swings from remote countryside to city/cities and back again. I also prefer trains to the car for environmental reasons and because I can work en route too.

One major difficulty for me carrying Chanel all the time is getting past the conspicuous logo on many products. I have to know where I'm going and how I'm getting there when using Chanel. The bags I have are very low-key and/or don't have the chain handles, Chanel shoes I have, have really tiny logos, only one scarf has a very visible CC - but I can fold it. It's tough avoiding logos at Chanel apart from the RTW. Even wearing a Chanel leather vest/waistcoat last Friday was a bit much with my skirt, it's too easy to overload, next time I'll wear it with something plain. Hermes is getting that way too recently. I love Chanel, but a little goes a long way.

Anyway, major flaws at Chanel that prevent me overloading and reloading are: too logocentric; price/quality ratio; often an overly 'feminine' aesthetic; (mostly) chains/weight of bag; similar new looks to what's already in my wardrobe. Doesn't stop me looking and appreciating others' new things though.

There were very few non-British things she used, most famously H scarves.

QEII wore Launer primarily because they were a British brand. She didn't merch brands, but she promoted the UK. I agree, very good quality though, and taste/style always trumps status-flashing, obviously QEII didn't need help with status.

Purdey for her rifles. Haha, yeah scarf wise Hermes but bag wise…the late Queen used launer bags even to communicate from what the royal courtiers revealed. I miss seeing her face, it’s better than poor Charlie.
