im 5'5 and i have a 35 and its perfect, the 30 is too small i hate carrying it, it think its about your size, and how much you carry in your purse.
Interesting. I'm debating on whether the next Birkin is 35 or a 30. Thus far, all mine are 35- and I'm 5'.
If a bag is too small, it sometimes makes me look like a child, so I know what you mean.

I feel that way about a 25 Kelly or a 20 Kelly. It looks as if you are wearing your child's bag. I have a 25 Birkin and that just passes the size test and works for me as a dress bag. I am taller than you by 6 in and I don't feel the 30 is too small, but I am carrying it as a handbag and not as a tote. That could really be the heart of the matter and in the end, you have to try it. Make a mock up in cardboard using the dimensions of the bag and stand in front of a mirror. Also scout around your closet as you may already have a bag with similar dimensions. I have found the mock bag trick works very well.

I'm 5". for 30b it's ok for me and looks proportionate on me however it doesn't carry as much as I like. The 35 can carry everything i need on a REGULAR day but weighs a ton and I suspect, makes my shoulder lopsided. I don't think a smaller bag makes one look like a child, it's also often how we are dressed. if we are in frocks and overalls...well. But if dressed professionally, the 30 could well complement it.

Do you think body shape plays a part as well? Or just height / dress -style?

I think attitude is everything when carrying any bag. iI you can't feel comfortable, it doesn't matter how tall you are or you body shape. You won't look right because you don't feel right. That said, people can evolve and their comfort zones can change. I know it did for me with Kellys.

so true!

i am 5'1 and i used to love size 35 bcause somehow it looks cooler but finally the weight of birkin 35 changed my mind especially when travelling. i Have moved on to 30 and 25 now, and i will never look back to 35...i realized its not just about the look...the functionality (in this case the weight) also matters and for me the best ones are birkin 25 and birkin 30 =)

I am contemplating getting a second 30 and thought I would check out this thread again. Weight and look of the bag are both considerations. I am 5'2, medium build (size 6 us, 38 fr, 42-44 italian). With my build, 30 belted in closed is too small, purse like, conservative (JMO), but 30 batwinged out feels like a natural sized bag/tote to me. I live in the city and walk a lot, and the 30 batwinged out is more understated (JMO) full disclosure I never owned a 35 but I did have a 32 HAC)

The 32 HAC was slightly too big and bulky when batwinged, so I kept it belted all the time which was a problem when you had to whip out your phone or wallet. The 32 HAC was also considerably heavier, and big enough that I could and did use it as an overnight bag and to lug wine.

If I recall, 30 batwinged out can fit a Mac book air, iPad, iPhone, sunglasses and cosmetics, wallet and a spare rain bag, collapsible rain hat and a small umbrella. I recall that a magazine or A4 file could also fit, but I'd have to double check. I normally carry iPad, iPhone, sunglasses, cosmetics, wallet and spare rain bag. Also I can fit a GM or a light sweater on top.

With weight and bulk being an issue, when I want to carry more, I use my double sens (also heavy because it is reversible, but it is a shoulder bag and conforms to the body. Or my Victoria 35. I usually don't use it for evening - I use a clutch.
