Do you have an (Hermes) clutch life?

The only Hermès bags I have are clutches. I don’t live a formal lifestyle, but I carry clutches often, more than any other style I have. (I have purchased primarily Bottega Veneta bags for about ten years, but prefer larger clutches than the Knot for practical reasons.) I also like Asian design and architectural influences in bags. So, when I saw an Octogone, I was hooked. Then I saw a Baton de Craie. Then a 2004 Verrou. What can I say? I see eccentricity as being a positive trait and a great cover for impulsive decisions. :yahoo:

Most of the H clutches I have also come in shoulder bag versions. I simply see my clutches as regular bags but without the straps. I occasionally carry a clutch in a tote, especially when I travel. The tote also carries other things and can stay in the hotel room or car trunk when I don’t need it and I simply carry the clutch. Did I mention my ability to rationalize my choices?

I’ve posted a few mod photos on this forum and I’m always casually dressed (usually in jeans) and carrying a clutch. A clutch forces me to edit how much I carry and that’s been a good lesson for me. I think it’s important to note that I’m vintage myself, so I don't need to carry children’s necessities with me or things like snacks.

All these are frequent flyers, except the Verrou. It’s just a bit too small for me to use often.
Yes, I could easily get by with one clutch if I just used it for dressy occasions, and I might get to that point some day, but not yet.....

I was just thinking of you when I saw the name of this thread! ... did your clutches multiply? Or am I imagining things? Amazing collection Diane

I have 2 H clutches. I am shocked how much I love my black box 1938, not only the minimal beauty but the practicality too. Out of the 2 it's the one I could use for day if I had to. It holds everything I need for the evening or an occasional lunch etc (25cm) but it's still compact. I don't have an H clutch life very often but when I do I like to be stylishly different. I was going to get a Kelly Cut twice and a Medor at one time but actually nothing compares to my 1938.

I’d love to see a photo of your clutches....and your black box 1938 sounds divine.

Some of my pics are on phorltobucket and are blurry. My other clutch is a 1950 Arceau and was one of 2 inherited bags.

Here's my 1938 though.
Thank you. I like that style. I’ve seen a few in photos but had no idea what style they were. There is way too much to learn about H. Hermès is almost it’s own language!

I'd like to get rid of some of my clutches. I love the idea, I love the look but they do not work for me practically. I"d rather be hands-free at any event. I neither have the time nor the inclination to take care of a handbag...Small talk is enough of a challenge!

Pleasure it forward &you might be pleasantly surprised that there is interest in "clutches" now

idk about the ppl who are saying they like to be hands-free, we kinda live in the age where we constantly have our phone in our hands, so it's basically the same thing holding a clutch in my hand. when i get out of my car and walk to the grocery store, i have my phone in my hand even if i'm carrying a shoulder bag. i don't think my phone ever really lives in my bag

i have 2 jiges and 1 medor , never had the need for them when i was younger, but after getting older and working, i've found that i use clutches more, esp for christmas parties and business events.

Me too! I find daytime clutch-use has multiplied. Our belongings have streamlined.

Either turn them into wall art like @diane278 did, or use them as a 'bag-in-a-bag' like I do with some of mine! If I'm carrying a larger bag, I'll sometimes use a clutch as a carry-all for my wallet/keys/makeup, and carry 'non-essential' items (notebooks, tablet, etc.) in the same (larger bag) with it.

I never thought I would be a clutch person, because I am a “no fuss” person in my daily life when it boils down to it. However, I discovered that a clutch is supremely practical and convenient when the correct size, shape and structure is chosen. I started with a Kelly Pochette and even added a second, but in swift they are too soft to hold under the arm, yet the handle is too small to hold easily, and the clasp takes a small bit of effort. Mine are swift, so too casual for evening, and I have other options for what they seem best suited for in my lifestyle (brunch/lunch/quick outings). Then I purchased an Egee on a whim, and it turned out to be perfect for me! Like others have mentioned, I often just grab my wallet when I get out of the car to go shopping for the sake of convenience, but with smaller and more minimal wallets that can feel a little sloppy (obvious that I grabbed it out of my bag out of laziness, as if I am just running into the drug store on the way home to pick up some toothpaste). Not that it stops me. However, a clutch can hold everything I need for a quick shopping trip, be a decent bag visually and be held easily under the arm when the right proportions are selected. For me, that was a clutch with a short height (I am petite and most clutches fall out since they come down to my elbow), moderately long for space, rounded for space and to hold more easily, an effortless clasp, and a stiffer structure and leather (Egee in box) so it does not wilt when pressed under the arm like my swift KPs. I would love to add more clutches to my collection!
So while I don’t have what would be thought of as a clutch lifestyle, my actual rushed and lazy lifestyle is definitely appropriate for clutches!

Wonderful collection you have!

My approach to clutches is very much like yours. I use them as day bags, sometimes combined with other bags. Of course also for evenings, diners and more formal events. I also like shoulder bags that look good carried as clutches, as it is true a strap can come handy sometimes.
I believe at the very least everyone should carry a clutch inside a big bag. I always dislike when a woman comes into a working meeting with a humongous work bag and starts fumbling inside for a pen or something. Girl, leave the bag in the office and bring a clutch!

I have 5 Hermes clutches. A Jigge, a Faco, a Rio and 2 nameles vintage. Well, they are all vintage (I dislike the East/West Jigge). Also have a 70s trousse that I use a summer clutch. I'd love a 1938, and the Verrou, although it is so expensive that I may prefer it with the strap (which I have), but a vintage E/W Verrou from the 30s would be a dream. Now that I see your Octagones I want those too. I am not sure about the KP... I don't have a collectors mentality with bags, but I find with clutches, they are so easy to collect and so useful... that the temptation is there.

I love my jige in Electric Blue. I use it for casual lunches or dinner with friends or family. I throw it in a larger tote for work days and i know I’m going to an event after. I always dreamed of having a KP but now my three mini roulises take care of the evening bag need plus shoulder or cross body is so freeing for my lifestyle. Im glad I have one in a minimal design and pop color! I use a beautiful monogrammed insert with it as my hold all too to protect the canvas lining.
