I had my ears pierced at a young age. From about 14 I enjoyed wearing silver rings, chains and earrings. In my late teens it changed to YG. I still wear yellow gold chains as I did as a teen. I still wear YG hoops. However, I’ve branched out in that I have loved diamonds and other gemstones for years, and also like rose and white gold. Other than that, my style really hasn’t changed that much. My go to jewellery is YG curb chains and YG hoops. I do change up my rings a lot, apart from my stack rings which are daily wear. I have briolette gemstone earrings, diamond hoops and studs, a diamond pendant, gemstone pendants, and a diamond bracelet that I tend to wear when going out (not all at the same time!). I’m basically typical of a British working class woman when it comes to my everyday jewellery.

I was just thinking about this the other day - my style has changed so much over the years, specifically with respect to jewellery. Of course when I was a young teenager it was completely different and I’m not counting back then. But when I was 16-18ish jewellery didn’t matter to me, so I never wore any except a cheap Swatch.

In the subsequent decade or so I first developed a very classic minimalist style (discreet Tag Carrera and super small diamond studs), then a slightly more “blingy” style (but only WG, bigger diamonds etc.), then a brief coloured stones phase, then I had a branded jewellery phase where I wore only either solitaires or my few Cartier/VCA pieces (love bracelet, VA pendant). Oh then a mixed metals phase where I had to wear at least one piece in a different colour. Recently I’ve been going back to my Indian roots a bit more and wearing more traditional looking pieces with my western/work clothes. They aren’t big pieces of jewellery but they are very traditional (eg enamel, carved or with polki/kundan, in bright YG).

It also hasn’t been a linear progression - I’ve had months where I’ve gone back to an “older” look (so going from branded weeks to coloured stone weeks to a month of classic WG). It also isn’t really tied to clothing style, because I’ve had the same clothing/makeup style for the better part of a decade. Also, this mixing up my look thing only really started a couple years ago. Before this I used to pretty religiously only wear the exact same watch and earrings every single day, only swapping them out for special occasions.

So TPFers - let’s hear your thoughts!

Hi all! I'm new to this forum. I can say that I'm not a fan of expensive purse, but I love fine jewelries, so I just jumped right away to this thread :).
This is an interesting topic :). I was born and raised in Southeast Asia and when I was growing up, I realized that older women often wore gold jewelries to show their wealth. Back then, gold jewelries had to be "on your face" with old fashioned design. With that in mind, when I was in my 20s, I preferred white gold. But now I see myself looking better in yellow or rose rose gold. Now that jewelries are widely available in various modern design, it's easier to get a subtle look with gold. So yes, now I'm stuck with loving yellow or rose gold jewelries :). Luckily in my culture, you don't have to wait for other people to buy jewelries. If you have the money, just stop by a gold shop and you can buy the jewelry on gram. :)

Yes, totally. At now I'm on pearls, brooches, and my family jewelry. I've known that pices all my life, but now at 44 I really appreciate and wear them. Sadly not for my everyday life, I work in a difficult part of my city and in a reeeealy casual company (we had a slippers day this year, yeah, I know). This means that I stopped also wearing my favourite watches  (even if nobody really notice your jewelry, if you wear casual clothes, but better safe than sorry).

Absolutely. When I younger, it was all about modern, statement silver pieces. I started to realize YG and RG flatter my skintone better and played around with costume jewelry for a bit. After DH proposed with a dainty ring in RG, I went down the fine jewelry rabbit hole, buying other dainty pieces that would coordinate and last.

It's funny how our taste changes over time.

I was very young (6 or 7 i think) when i asked mom if i can get my ears pierced. I wanted YG heart studs i saw (there was a jewlery store near where we used to live). It was nothing designer, just local jewler. Couple of years later i wanted a necklace with matching heart pendant. I remember other kids teasing me because of the necklace, making comments it looks ugly.. So i wore it under T-shirts. I really loved them, and felt special when i wore them.

Then, in my late teens and early 20s, YG was kinda outdated, so i first switched to WG, but quickly realised that it didn't mached my skin tone. So i ended up with silver. It was "muted" and fit me better. Now i have huge collection, because it was affordable. I still like them but i don't love them all.

Now in my mid 30s i'm rediscovering love for YG. I kept those from my childhood  I think i will wear the necklace again.

Like many, in my teens and 20s it was the cheap stuff I could afford. In my early to mid 30s it was the Nice/Fancy stuff a career woman was 'supposed to' have (pearl studs, diamond studs, Tiffany necklace, etc.). By the time I hit 40 (currently 41) I was happily in the 'what I like' and 'meaningful to me' stage.

My favorite ring is a wrap ring with a paw on one side and heart on the other - to show my love of animals. I have it in silver and rose gold. I have some fun, and cheap, costume jewelry for Halloween and Christmas. I still have my nice pieces bought in my 30s. I will still buy the expensive fine jewelry on rare occasions, but only if it's a piece I really love, not because I am 'supposed' to have/want it. A pair of Morganite and rose gold earrings are my current favorite.

I have several pieces that are Alex&Ani, with the charms that mean something to me. One is a bracelet with a USMC emblem as the charm. I also have a necklace that is decent, but far, far from High End; with the USMC emblem - that I love, and is my favorite necklace. No I don't wear them together, as that would be overkill, and they are different styles that do not look good together.

I have a few pieces from NOGU that I like. I've also become fond of pieces from local artisans, gotten at art fairs, farmers markets, etsy, and small boutiques; and am working to grow my collection of those.

I’ve had two phases. Nothing but my wedding band until I hit my 40s. No earrings or pendants or bracelets. Then 40 something hit and it was diamonds and ering upgrades. Never wore my ering and then just jumped to a size my family would wonder if it was real. Then completed the diamond staples and now it’s VCA and has been for about 6 years. Cartier occasionally but VCA daily and obsessively. And on occasion a unique vintage piece. Ok maybe three phases.

Anything I can get lol as I’m always chopping and changing so that it’s really annoying me.
I’ve ordered these two now:
1. Heart cut and princess cut .33 18k ring may look good on top of my Cartier ring.
2. iolite and white zircon 9k ring.
Once they arrive and I will decide on which I’m keeping.
Heart cut diamonds are to die for.
The smaller princess cut diamonds are 3.50mm x3.50mm does anyone know what weight they approx would be? Prob tiny.
It will say on the cert but didn’t have it on the website. Just the TCW. Hoping the heart will be at least 20-25 points .5169E74A-A70E-46D4-808F-541029B003DA.jpeg1F615870-1D05-490F-96A1-14904E597F25.jpeg 5062DD47-9908-4212-B05E-D46541445377.jpeg7F3853E8-F91F-4A4C-A92C-1D1502226441.jpeg A2A1AB00-3D4E-443E-AEF8-7FB5C46A13C5.jpeg

Great thread and great discussion!
I've gone through different phases: I've gone through only wearing white gold, only wearing yellow gold, gone through the rose gold phase, mixed-metals phase. I went through a phase of making my own and wearing bead bracelets with gold charms to go with my my gold jewelry.
When I was in high school I used to say I don't care for watches when everybody was collecting Swatch (OMG am I aging myself here lol???), but for a few years now, I've become a watch collector.
One thing I never got into was buying costume jewelry. I loved how it looks on other people but everytime I tried, I felt like it never worked on me.
And one thing that has stayed constant is my love for stacking bracelets be it all solid gold pieces or mixed with bead, leather or silk bracelets.

I am going through a phase right now where I am questioning whether to keep my costume jewellery or to sell them. I only have three pieces (Hermes Clic-Clac PM, Hermes Kelly Double Tour and Dior grosgrain choker) and the strange thing is that I wear my fine jewellery on a daily basis but add my costume jewellery for special occasions, whereas it should really be the other way around.

I have a special attachment to these pieces as I bought them on three separate overseas trips, however, I barely wear them. Only time will tell if I keep them, but the choker is probably the first thing on the chopping block.
