I always dress nicely when leaving the home, be it grocery shopping or going to LV. I am a put together type of person.

.

That sums it up for me too.. Unless i am running to the supermarket from the gym, i am dressed... Not a ball gown .. But a nice jean/pant and top and shoes.. Not sneakers

As much as I'd like to say "No it doesn't matter what you wear, they should treat you with the utmost respect whether you're wearing pj's or $500 jeans" the awful truth is SA's in most boutique's will not.

I usually try to be presentable, honestly jeans and a nice shirt is enough. No one needs to bust out the Rolex and CL's, but I can say it does help to be carrying large shopping bags with other boutiques on them! :p

I wasn't so much coming from the clothes perspective as the hair & make-up perspective. I absolutely HATE to do my hair & make-up, I hate the feeling of make-up on my face and product in my hair. Unless I'm going to work or going out, the LAST thing I want to do on a weekend is my hair & make-up. I want to shower, pull my hair back & go. I resent wasting the time to do my hair & make-up, just to spend 10 minutes in a store.

I usually try to be presentable whenever I leave my home, whether I'm running errands or shopping. The only times when I don't make an effort are when I'm going for a run or going downstairs to the supermarket to grab something. I won't exactly "dress up" just to go shopping at a high-end store; I usually just wear jeans, a sweater, and boots or flats, depending on the weather, wherever I'm going.

Oh...I think it's just depends on how comfy you feel without hair and makeup done. Without makeup I look like a kid, so I try to at least put on some lipstick and mascara on and obviously comb my hair. I think as long as you don't look like you rolled out of bed it should be fine.

I wouldn't go out in 'pajamas and slippers' but I usually wear jeans (not designer) and a T-shirt and no make-up to shop.

I remember one day that my husband and I were rushing out to do our Saturday errands, both in jeans and Ts and my hair was even still wet as I let it dry naturally, and I mentioned that I'd seen on tPF that LV was going to have a price increase soon.

So he insisted we buy my Speedy before they sold out (promised as my birthday gift and I'd already tried the different sizes on and knew exactly what I wanted).

We were in and out of LV in five minutes and he even said in from of the SA "ooh, I save money too" because I had shown it to him on the US website and the Canadian price was $50 less.

I was expecting the 'once-over and ignore' treatment that people sometimes report here, because we looked poor - or at the very least for them to think this guy would refuse to buy it once he found out the price, but the two SAs (we were the first customers when they opened) were very attentive. One rang us up while the other wrapped/bagged it.

I'll do hair & makeup to go to the mall, but not for grocery shopping only. I do get positive attention at the mall.

Recently I went to the "cheap" mall without makeup on to pick up a pre-paid order of expensive skin care & makeup at a major department store. The SAs behind the counter who were supposed to help me ignored me (well, they acknowledged me and then disappeared to empty the trash), but the manager and SAs from other makeup counters came out of the woodwork to ask if I was being helped. It was weird. I had showered and my skin looked good, hair was pulled back and looked OK, just didn't have makeup.

I ended up talking another customer into wanting a Clarisonic while I was waiting. At least I was working. ;)

Do I feel the need to dress up? No.
Do I recognize that we are constantly judged by how we look? Yes.
Example: Went to a shopping looking very put together and had the surreal experience of being waited on hand and foot. Would you like tea, water? Can we get you a personal shopper? No, No, let me bring that too you.
I’ve shopped in that mall plenty of times but never received the level of service.
There’s a youtube video showing a similiar experience. When the recording artist returned to the mall with her Video Camera dressed in her casual comfort closed she was surrounded by security and almost thrown from the mall.

I feel the need to dress up so they will at least give me the attention I deserve. In our if you do not look like you have money, they will not give you the time of day. Sad but true.

IMO if your clothing is "smart casual" and your hair is neat.. maybe a little lipgloss..i think that will work

Have to make an exception to the sneakers, with Isabel Marant, CL and other high-end sneaks everywhere now when an SA see's someone with a real pair on I think that would perk them up. I'm guessing however you were referring to casual tennies though;)

I agree:yes: I don't think there is a need to go overboard either.

I am in the professional field so I am typically well dressed when I am out and about. I usually go that extra step when I shop in Chicago, Toronto or New York, so when I stop into a LV boutique I can act like "I have been there before". My vet, whom I have know for 22 years, is very well groomed and can handle herself in any situation. She gets dressed up in her best LV jewelry and most expensive LV purses and gets THE best service when shopping in the Chicago LV boutique. Let's be honest and call it what it is...people judge whether they should or not. I worked high end retail in high school and college. I tried not to judge but it happens. I try to treat everyone with respect not knowing whether they have money or not! It really shouldn't matter...
