Do you baby your bags?

I AM A BABY-er! If wearing and using bag brings joy to you, keeping it pristine brings joy to me! A member mentioned earlier that there is a certain amount of coolness with the nonchalant use of a luxury item which I always, always try to pull off. At the end of the day, while I was acting "cool" my brain was telling me "do I look cool enough to not care because all I wanna do is make sure this baby doesn't get hurt/dirty/touched."

I hate it when random people touch my bags. I find this particularly rude. I dont know where your hands have been! This was a problem for me before with nosey co-workers but I found this particulary alarming and annoying with SAs. I always ask permission from the owner first before I touch a bag, even if I know it doesn't cost more than $100, out of respect. Unless a bag is on a store display shelf, that is why it's there, this should be the only time bags are touched by random people. So, my message to the SAs that plan to do this, (I know they are not here) ask permission from me first or wear your store-issued gloves! My SA knows better, this is not her or anyone from my home boutique.

Recently, I put my brand new Gris Mouette B35 on the marble (or tile?) floor at The Rotunda Neiman Marcus (afternoon tea) for less than 10 mins... I couldn't do it! Initially, I thought, it has plastic on it's feet. Then I thought, well, what if the leather touches the floor? Good thing I remembered I have a reusable bag so laid it like a picnic blanket and put my B35 on top. We were at a corner so I know I didn't make a spectacle. After the restaurant, my sister and I went to our go to our favorite place when we can't find anything we like at any Union Square boutiques... Nordstrom Rack, where there are always treasures to be found! Lol! I put a pair of shorts that I bought in my B35, which was so uncharacteristic of me, but it felt right. I even forgot to take it out for a few days. That goes to show, B35 is roomy. Lol!

I would not carry my bag like that lady at the supermarket because I always wanna look cool, but one way that works for my neutrotic behavior towards my bags is by hooking it on my son's stroller handle. I feel like I am able to protect it more because it is closer to me and I keep my eye on it every so often.

I wanted this post to be a candid recollection of my latest experiences so I'm not gonna enumerate all the things I do for my bags (keep in box, keep stuffed, lay on it's back, etc, etc, etc.) because I do pull all the stops but a few things that I thought of doing is climate control. I dont own and exotics and I live in the Bay Area (California) so I dont think it's necessary until I do a full on research about that topic. Another thing I haven't adopted is Lexol wipe. I've heard about it but always procrastinate in buying.

With all the babying, my bags have been through unavoidable circumstances like rain, water spillage, hardware/leather scratches done by me (unbeknownst) and others, leather dryness, etc. My bags and I, of course, survived these ordeals, but did it hurt like hell? YES IT DID! Every inch of my soul for days on end.

To each his own.
Awww I too have caused inadvertent "injury" to my birkins. I once brought the B to Target and put a tube of Vaseline in the cart where the bag was. Turns out the edges on the tube were extraordinarily SHARP and literally sliced the bottom of my birkin in 3 places. EPSOM. Thought I'd die. Beat myself up for days! But we both survived. =)

Oh my! [emoji50] I would have been upset that I let something as cheap as a Vaseline tube scratch my expensive bag!

I'm glad you survived [emoji14]

I looked through this thread and never once did I read that PEOPLE are less important than the H bags we own..... scratching my head.... terrible to even think anyone would think that way.

Er, no, no one has said that. And no one has claimed that anyone has said that. Speaking for myself, I was talking about my personal take on extreme fastidiousness, and suggesting that in some circumstances over-concern about stuff can make others feel uneasy--which is something I try like mad to avoid, however precious a thing is to me. It is too bad that people can prioritize the inanimate over the animate, but it happens rather a lot, actually, in ways large and small. Like I said, my specific history makes me hypersensitive to this tendency.

Ahhh yes, I totally get that. Thanks for sharing that.
Hmmmm, it never even occurred to me that anyone caring for their bag could make someone else feel uncomfortable.... interesting.
I do get what you were saying.... probably not so much about a bag but still...
I think I would be uncomfortable that they are uncomfortable about me wanting a chair or place for my bag ... and the resulting awkwardness would prompt me to fantasize about leaving the table :flowers:

tPF needs a sarcasm font, pronto.
OMG, I am laughing out loud. "Thanks for sharing that." "Interesting." The table pun.
Subtle.
:shrugs: Ignore button.
Back to topic; sorry for the interruption.
Oh, and a dearth of experience or a failure of empathy does not render any other person's pov false.

I can't put any bag on the floor (or wash my hair at night or when I have a cold).

I'm the most relaxed with my black B. Not so relaxed with my other H bags. I don't do anything special other than an insert, but I wont carry them to certain places or if its pouring rain when I leave the house. I am the worst with my Kelly. I only take it certain places. Our relationship is slow to move to the next level.

I just bought a black B with the intent of relaxed wear. Time will tell. I too am the worst with my Kelly's.
I never, ever put my Hermes or other bags on the floor. No matter what is in the environment, there is more on the floor.
I'm not sure it really matters in my case. Even if the bag is sitting on my lap covered by a napkin, something finds it's way to the intended target ...

Keeping bags pristine is important to me also and wish I were more relaxed about wearing them.
I'm thinking of trying a strategy to wear the bag soon after purchase and avoid the building anxiety of a first time out
I use the word "anxiety" loosely. There are a lot more important things to be anxious about.
Still, a lot of thought is put into buying a bag. Usually, they are not impulsive purchases for me

I think u took what I said completely WRONG (as I took your original post to be totally judgy, which was an error, I think).... But it's clearly not that serious.... for me.

Kumbaya, IF! Truly I wasn't intending to judge ANYONE--I was genuinely just relating my own, very personal and probably rather off-beat reaction to the topic.
I really do believe that all of us have the right to treat our belongings in any way we see fit.

Well, I think we are all just expressing our personal relationships with our bags without being judgemental. Hope we are having fun with it.
And continuing.....for me this is bag dependent. I put Birkins on the floor all the time, but I would not put a Jige on the floor.
There is a video somewhere here of Jane Birkin stomping on a Birkin (I guess to soften it up).....that is probably at the far end of the spectrum.

I did the same thing.... I shared my own personal reasons for they way I treat my things a few pages back. This came from my childhood and I clearly realize that things our parents do make us who we are to a certain extent.... Your reaction to my response just struck me as strange. I was attempting to be humorous about the whole thing (this is a funny topic to me)but you also said something that I genuinely NEVER thought about... making someone uncomfortable because of the way I treat a purse. I really might do that to some people (not my friends bc they are the same way as me)... but I never even thought about that. I can honestly say I don't wish to make anyone feel that way! BUT I can also honestly say I'd rather leave at that moment than make them comfortable by not being who I genuinely am. Is that insensitive? Or just keepin it real... hypothetically anyway. So that's what I meant. It was about me in that moment. It was NOTHING against you and the things that make you the person you are. I was making light of a fictitious awkward moment for me and being silly but I guess I'm no Adam Sandler.... xo

I agree about personal relationships with bags
I honestly admire you put your Birkin on the floor. I wish I could do the same.
We are supposed to feel comfortable wearing our bags. They are not intended to cause tension
