Do you baby your bags?

With the talk of washing our kellys and birkins, I am reminded of some IG posts from about a year ago. Jamie Chua and at least one other (probably) well-known IGer posted photos of their exotic birkins and kellys smashed into the snow and in the surf at the beach. IMHO it was not meant to show how the bags are just "things," but to throw in viewers' faces just how very wealthy they are.

^^^This is a contemporary potlatch:
"Dorothy Johansen describes the dynamic: 'In the potlatch, the host in effect challenged a guest chieftain to exceed him in his 'power' to give away or to destroy goods. If the guest did not return 100 percent on the gifts received and destroy even more wealth in a bigger and better bonfire, he and his people lost face and so his 'power' was diminished.' "

Ok, sorry for anyone that's had MRSA-it sounds terrible and I'm glad everyone is ok now. It's clear that no one here has gotten MRSA from their Hermes however and we've established how gross the world is, germs and bacteria are everywhere and yet sometimes my bag must go on the floor. It's just life and I'm not saying anyone HAS to put their bag anywhere they're not comfortable with. But I don't believe I'm going to get MRSA from putting my bag on the ground in a pinch nor do I believe that bad luck is coming my way because I put it by my feet.

Back to topic, the Karl interview is a fascinating read. His perspective about not considering fur or diamonds as investments is really thought provoking in the world of tPF where many consider H an investment.

My original question was if enjoyment is lessened by caring for the bags but it truly seems that pampering bags gives many people just as much joy as I get from mine

Oh, and I've only named one of my bags. My K25 is named for my dad because the first time I carried it was to his birthday celebration at Leydoyen in Paris. So now I think of that when I take her out of the box. And yes, she's in her box at the moment, stuffed and felt covered while I wait to move into our new bedroom with a bag closet. Despite using my bags in a somewhat carefree way, I am not a total philistine [emoji8]

PS Leydoyen did have a hidden bag stool so of course I put it there, the Maitre d seemed thrilled to offer it so it would have been impolite to plop it on the carpet but my dad did roll his eyes at me. And the plastic is on but I had just gotten it two days before. I took it off when I got back the US.

Very interesting, I don't consider any bag or object an investment personally I think if you look at this way you would be less likely in my opinion to enjoy it and use it. But, I do plan my bags for the occasion that way I feel I can enjoy them. For example, I wouldn't take an Birkin or Kelly to Disneyland but, I would take a Evelyn bag. I would not enjoy the bag in such a place because I would be concerned about potential damage. I wouldn't want to worry where to put my bag when getting on a ride or it getting wet things along those lines. So, yes to your question in some circumstances being overly concerned with your bags can take away from the enjoyment of using them. This is why I have bags that I can use during those times that I don't mind getting wet and/or smashed.
BTW, Your Kelly is gorgeous

Life and ideas can change very fast. What you consider truth today might change tomorrow. I became the happy owner of a BBB today and it's so shiny and beautiful and perfect in every way that I have to go and buy a tote at Fauré le Page tomorrow in order to protect my black beauty during flight. So I will spend money on a tote (I don't like shoulder bags, never owned a Neverfull etc) just to get my dreambag scratchfree home. The plastic is still on but it comes off asap at home. With a barenia bag I could relax but now I join the bag babying extremists [emoji33]

I just came back from our National TPF meeting in Vegas** and it was very heartwarming for me to see some of our lovely members placed their gorgeous B and K on the floor* against the wall on one side and on the opposite side, about 6 or 7 H bags were quietly lining up side by side on a spare table* next to the window looking out to the resort swimming pool. The rests placed the bags right behind our backs sharing a chair (including me).

Everyone was so happy to finally meeting each other (new and old friends) and we were so involved with group activities including buffet lunch and cake cutting .... I even found a little bit of cake on my beloved Kelly later :p, I wiped it off and she was glowing again. My observation tells me that everyone should be different and there is no specific way how we should treat our handbags, is all about our "preferences" because each one of us is unique and special :hugs:.

Personally I will never try to change what other people believes in their life, instead I change myself first if necessary .

*It was a private meeting in a secure room so our bags are safe in the meeting room without supervision.

Very well said indeed, the meet looked like so much fun! :)

Thank you dear Mrs O [emoji173]️

It's the only brand I could consider for a shopping canvas tote, have bought 2 small accessories over a year ago and they are great. Inside the tote I feel relaxed with my new bag, the dustbag only cannot protect enough = babying extremist

Serva- have you done a reveal yet? Love to see it!
I'm sorry to disappoint you, I'm not a revealing person [emoji1] and I need to learn to watermark my pics. Perhaps I will create a tread where I introduce all my H bags, when I feel my collection is complete. I will definitely have trouble sleeping tonight, cannot believe this bag is mine!

Thank you dear ehy, for me H is about the leathers and black box was my unicorn.

Now I'm wondering should I turn to our lovely Docride and follow the steps to treat my box bag more waterresistant =less prone to blistering, or what is the best for my bag? Luckily I have treads to read helping me in this question. I can also consult my favourite leather craftsman. I have only had the bag in my possession for a couple of hours, already worrying, babying and when this euphoria of having a grail bag calms down I hope to go back to "basic babying" [emoji1]

I totally understand!! I have a Delvaux Brilliant in the most buttery box leather and I worried too in the beginning...but it is incredibly sturdy!! I see scratches on it but its still sooooo beautiful!!

People did seem to have their bags all over the place! Some started on the crowded tables with water and coffee, some on the floor, and some ended up on chairs. There were a variety of bags and personalities there and I didn't see anyone make a fuss over their bags. I think, in general, we all take care of our belongings. To what degree depends on the personality of the person.
