Do people go to LV, then Chanel and then Hermes?

That wasn't my pattern. But that's because I'm not a fan of LV or Hermes. Except for a couple of LV's new bags, I'm just not excited about either brand despite a lot of time investigating, viewing, shopping, fondling each.

And, it's also because I don't live in a fashion center or major metro area. People around me (rich or poor) aren't much for fashion. So, growing up, I didn't see high end bags (other than the ubiquitous LV) to consider or covet. (For comparison, I have only seen a Ferrari or Mazarati when I travel. Despite some having great wealth here, we just aren't a bling / brand city. When I bought a Jaguar years ago it was like putting a flashing purple spotlight on top of a raging pimple on my forehead. My city is just...modest and simple)

So, I started out with Coach / Michael Kors / Kate Spade bags. Then, because I saw other bags when I travel, I jumped to Gucci & Prada (with a short, troubled, regretful pass through Valentino pre rock stud). I've recently purchased Chanel and thought I'd build a collection because I LOOOOOVED my first one but, I just haven't been as excited about my subsequent purchases (or tours through Chanel boutiques) as I thought I'd be. I have two Chanels that I love but, I returned / sold two others. I'll likely add one or two more down the road but, unless something intriguing appears for Chanel, not much more after that.

That being said, I'm really more about the individual bag v. staying with or aspiring to a certain brand. As I've posted before, this past year has been a time in which I've recovered from serious illness, lost resultant weight (plus some!) and changed careers. So, I've overhauled my wardrobe, sold a ton of handbags and am replenishing. In the last two months, I bought vintage Chanel, brand new Prada, clearance Badgley Mischka, and sale Dooney & Bourke. Simply because I dearly loved each of them. Not because they had to be of a specific brand to which I've arrived.

I don't like the mainstream. Anything more exclusive, minimalist, small brand, not really popular would be my taste. Like Phillip Lim (not the pashli), Sophie Hulme, Valentino, Saint Laurent, Proenza Schouler, Valextra, Delvaux, etc. I try to avoid all the mainstream and monogram things.

Not me, but I don't see brands in tiers like that, although I think I used to. IMO, every brand offers something different, but not necessarily better or worse. I tend to be all over the place, and often liking only one or two bags from any brand.

I bought a Chanel GST and in a way it discouraged me from price point progression. It's a nice enough bag, but I have no idea why it cost what it did. I realized I can be happy without having to "move on" to more Chanel and Hermes, and that there is value in many different brands.

I am teenager and a student who recently bought Lv. Before Lv I bought bags from different designers like LeSportSac, Kipling, Lacoste, Cath Kidson, Ted Baker, Longchamp, DKNY, Calvin Klein, Coach, Kate Spade, Tory Burch. I do not foresee myself buying Chanel and Hermes in the near future. After Lv, I want to venture into other brand like Balenciaga, Chloe, Mulberry, Givenchy, Valentino, Proenza Schouler etc. I have no plan to save up for particular brand just because they seems more exclusive. I happened to appreciate each brand for it's own look so I do not think I will stick to any particular brand, be it Chanel or Hermes even I can afford them next time. If I own Hermes bag, I am pretty sure I will still buy other brands. Evelyn and Berline looks good for my age. [emoji173]️

I agree with vintagefinds, Every brand offers different style. Chanel and Hermes do not offer edgy style like Bal, Alexander Wang's, Givenchy and Rockstuds bags from Valentino! Since I like edgy look, it is impossible for me to stick with Hermes and Chanel lol.

Not for me either. Never been a fan of LV (though I like some of their leather bags, so I won't say never). I also prefer Dior to Chanel. The vote is still out on Hermes.

I started Prada/Marc Jacobs/Stuart Weitzman/Ferragamo/Armani/Burberry/Marc by Marc Jacobs as gifts or permanent borrows from my mom, with purchases of Michael by Michael Kors and Tod's myself. Then I had intended to buy Chanel, only to realize Dior was for me. I also didn't abandon Marc Jacobs, Tod's, or Burberry entirely.

Then I discovered Valextra, Mark Cross, Delvaux, Smythson, BV, Givenchy, and other designers. However, after an addiction/spree, I realized clothes were my real passion, and that I didn't need that many bags (or brands).

I still dreamt of a Hermes BBK though, but when I was able to purchased another Hermes first I was somewhat disillusioned. I admit it was only one bag, but it put me off my Kelly obsession, at least for a while.

For now I am content with Dior, Valextra, Marc Jacobs, and some Tod's/Delvaux/Burberry. I'll probably try Hermes again (as well as any brand if a bag catches my eye).

A bit like that for me too. Experimented with lots of quirky designers, then LV, then Chanel and now Hermes. I tend to build a collection with one brand (get obsessed ;)) and only when the essentials are in, move on to the next while not totally forgetting favourites...they are always there somewhere. Some of the recent LV designs, especially the non monogram ones are quite tempting too. I will probably look in on LV again in a bit.

I think it's an age thing too (not in a getting old way but about emotional maturity and increased purchasing power as you hit your 30s and 40s compared to your 20s in many cases)...I only started liking Chanel after crossing 35. And while I'm planning to buy some of the more casual Hermes bags during the next few hops off ban island, I'm hoping for a Kelly for my big 40.

Not emotionally there yet to want a B...or even a K quite yet. It'll hit me when it's time. Like with Chanel :)

I marked my big 3-0 by getting a tattoo and was hoping to mark my 40th when it comes with something a little more grown up...oh and also another tattoo :)

Well said! I think age is definitely a factor. I'm in the exact same boat as you! I didn't even like Chanel until I'm 35 (this year). It's always been LVs and Guccis for me. Now all of a sudden I'm obsessing over Chanel. No to Hermes as of now. Perhaps after 40. Not into the B at all but perhaps a kelly. I didn't mark my 3-0 with a tattoo but I did get it at 32. I started off with Gucci and it was my only designer bag for years. I was into saving and investing when I was younger. It was so addicting to see my investments grow...especially in the 80's. Then I got into Jimmy Choo about 10 years ago but really, I do not buy any one designer. If I love the bag, I buy it. Not really attracted to Chanel or Hermes, tho.

Same here. I buy bags according to my needs. Some places (like amusement parks, farmer's market, etc.) requires an inexpensive nylon bag, while other places require a structured elegant handbag.

Nice choice! Some of these brands make really beautiful and good quality bags. You have good taste!

Hehe. I wanted to do something drastic - had bought kilos of anti ageing products but it didn't seem reassuring enough, so I got the tattoo I'd always wanted but was too chicken to get. Congrats on yours too :)

Now I'm actually enjoying getting older and wiser and looking forward to 40. :) Wonder how our style and bag preferences will evolve. This thread must be such a gold mine of information for anyone from these brands listening in.

You ladies r just amazing!!! I just celebrated my 40th birthday but alas without a tattoo! Too chicken of needles [emoji16][emoji16]...but have to agree with age comes new found confidence and looking back I have seen how my style and preferences have evolved and I wouldn't change a thing about them in the past either!

Ketaki, I agree! This thread is a mine of info for any brand listening in. As a professor of marketing this is amazing stuff for me too!
