I would like to address Swanky's post and some of the rebuttals to her post. Swanky is not coming out of the blue with her statements and would have to have been contacted by quite a few members expressing their concern. No one questions the incredible value of the authenticators and the services they provide, but on the same token no one has carte blanche to take on a "mean girls" persona and gang up on suspected fraudsters, this just bleeds out negativity. We all know that authenticators and many others are sick and tired of fakes and those that are responsible for making/selling them and are coming out of the right place to try to stop them but who else gets caught in the crossfire? New members are always going to come to this thread and ask inane questions about the same 500 BIN NIB birkin but that is the reality of an authentication thread. Do we all forget we were once naïve about these details and nuances too and asked the same questions? As far as taking things to PM, how realistic is that for a new member that doesn't have PM access yet but has a (in their minds) burning issue? I can think of one specific instance where PMing would have been futile.
Perigord and Ardneish you're both right. Calling some bullies and vigilantes isn't nice and isn't going to make anyone feel better but its hard to escape that perception held by more than a few. Though the strong reaction is coming from the right place (to halt fakes) it is off putting to many and sometimes you have to have the b*lls to say that.
Can authentication be done without name calling, taunting and ridiculing? ofcourse it can since most of the time it has been.

Joking, banter, johnny depp and armand assante (and who can forget the barenia thongs of days past) will always be integral parts of this thread and this blip too shall pass.

I love you! YOu always have a way of making a great point through humor, and you are right on! Here is the thing, when we can't take it to pm, I am going to suggest a cardinal rule: IGNORE THE IDIOTS and let me or the other mods deal with them:graucho: Really, even if the poster clutters up the thread, just report it and we can clean it up. Let us do our jobs, there is simply no need for any member here to feel compelled to call someone out or take on what appears to be a troll. Just use the "report" button so we know the exact post that is at issue, and we will take care of it.

And trust me, your point about being once naive is well taken. Three years ago, I found this forum because I wanted to authenticate a birkin that I now realize was a gross fake (for sale for a ridiculously low price at that too). Lucky for me, I stayed, read everything I could and made some excellent friends along the way. So lets all try to be more tolerant and accepting of eachother

^yes ma'am:yes:

I want to comment on why I said something publicly. . .
because some members were not respectful of people asking for help and were very public about it. If we/I did not say something publicly it would appear as though we condone this behavior and we do not.

This has nothing to do w/ how grateful we are for our authenticators, we're more than grateful.
This is a seperate issue, it's how we treat people, it's the environment, the community we're creating here.
EVERY forum's AT thread has people w/ less than honorable intentions, just best to not call them out publicly.

I really don't know. It's okay for everyone to discuss general niceness, and "don't be mean, anyone" statements, but notice the people who did authenticate, and who aren't on the AT thread anymore aren't responding or posting here? (well, except for DQ, Leah and ardneish).

At this point I figure, if it hasn't been done already, it's best that a private discussion take place between them and the owners and/or moderators if they feel the need to.

I agree about if people want to PM about it. . . but I also think it's important for people on both sides of any issue to feel like they're heard. KWIM?
We've overcome much bigger issues than this on tPF and the one thing I've learned is if we try and hush people too quickly it festers. But I agree about PMing as well, some things don't need to be beaten to death publicly.

I miss them:sad:

True, Swanky...but at this point I feel like only one side is talking. Other members come along and say "oh they were so mean on that thread", "we didn't like to post in that thread", "they didn't say please and thank you" and so on.

There is a deafening silence from the people who used to authenticate. We can only guess as to why they don't render their services anymore. People can drop out for a while due to personal issues, but not everyone quits at once. If you rebuked only a couple of people, where are the rest of them, why are they posting everywhere except on the AT thread, and why aren't they saying anything?

Otherwise this thread can continue to be a litany of people posting on how bad the authenticators made them feel. It might soothe those people's feelings, but is it going to make the authenticators feel they want to come back and continue doing the volunteer work they have been doing? Is it going to solve the problem of the lack of good authenticators on the thread right now?

ETA: And saying "We love our authenticators" at this point doesn't really cut it.

merika, maybe you and I should PM?:confused1:
I've seen opinions from both sides here.
And I'm not just saying we love our authenticators to try and patch anything up, to me what they do here is completely irrelevent to what has transpired.
If whoever 'they' are don't want to discuss it, that's fine too, but the floor is open if anyone wants to. That's all I'm saying.
If everyone feels it's been beaten to death, let's close this and start anew.

ITA- this discourse is about being polite to one another, yada yada yada.
Some of us just want our absent authenticators back. We miss their expertise and their lively banter. I, for one, am not too concerned about
what went on- this is a diverse forum and we are all adults here. Did that
exchange really hurt someone's feelings? I doubt it and if it did- well,
sorry, but it's time to move on.

It needs the mods and vlad meg etc to make contact with them
It should of been taken to PM, and not a full blown public flogging of one member who has an individual personality that I have grown to know and love

We are not all perfect I know I am not, but that member did not deserve to be devalued in such a pulic way. members will not come back to that thread unless someone from here offers an olive branch, sure others will take their place members without the huge experience they have, which will cause more problems long term

I know my dear mother always said never let the sun go down on an argument, even if you feel you are right, make amends life is short no time later for regrets, were all human and there fore fallible.

That member along with so many others have saved people the heartache of having their hard earned money " Stolen from them" by fakers.

An important thread in my view

... The AT thread and the volunteer authenticators should def. be recognized for the gifts they so openly gave the subforum members and complete strangers.
I really appreciated reading gga's entire wise post. And I wanted to echo this last sentiment, as it cannot be overstated, and IMO deserves to be said at least once daily!
