I also bought mine at blue Nile. Great customer service. Bought an engagement Ring and separate band. Did a lot of comparison shopping. Local quality and price could not compare.

I love bags, especially Chanel, but I get the sense you would get more use out of the diamond ring. If it's something you would wear every day, then get that! You could also get a preowned Chanel later on if you are worried about a price increase.

Don't listen to friends and family at home. If I did that, I wouldn't have one luxury item in my possession, period. It's a tough choice. I had a jewelry phase for awhile but my bag phase has lasted forever. I finally took the plunge a few days ago and bought a $1500 (plus tax) Chanel WOC, and I couldn't be happier. It's probably the most I'll ever be able to stomach paying for a bag, but I know I'll absolutely adore it and use it for many years. Someone mentioned Chanel's marketing scheme - "Buy it now before prices increase!" - and I agree, it's ridiculous, but as a Chanel lover, I have to admit that it's a pretty effective ploy. Good luck deciding and make sure to let us all know your choice!

I find the responses to this question very interesting as many tpf'ers recommend Chanel over a diamond. I was recently thinking how I could buy a really nice diamond if I didn't buy any more Chanels for a year.

As someone already mentioned earlier, one option is to get the Chanel and get some pretty costume jewelry to tie you over until you get your diamond. It's funny how I can't wear a fake Chanel but I am totally ok with cz or costume jewelry.

I hate to recommend this, but if I had a do-over with my engagement ring, I'd go CZ all the way. My e-ring is the only diamond in my possession, and although it is brilliant and timeless, I personally can't tell it apart from my CZ stud earrings or pendant necklaces. And you can get a really brilliant CZ for a fraction of the cost of a diamond, easily.

So CZ jewelry, Chanel bag.

And the reverse is true also. I got my "Chanel" look with a quilted leather Kate Spade and a Rebecca Minkoff at a tiny fraction of the price. Bags wear out if you use them. Good jewelry lasts forever and has universal value.

I have a diamond ring but no Chanel bags. Sometimes I worry over losing my diamond ring, but there is less chance of losing a Chanel bag, mainly because it is larger than a ring! Just my 2 cents.
