Hi everyone,
I am from Germany, sent many items to overseas countries (incl. Hong Kong, Malaysia, Japan, Australia) via DHL/Deutsche Post and never experienced anything similar, except for Russia. Russian postal service is worst, there are tons of mail pieces sitting at the various Moscow airports that are not processed. I shipped two scarves and one purse to Russia that were sitting at some Moscow airport for six weeks (!) without being processed until the recipients complained with Russian postal service. Due to such unpleasant experiences I will never ever ship anything to Russia again.
However, it is true, once the destination country does not provide online tracking for international mail pieces, it is impossible for the sender to track the item once it left Germany. It's no problem with usps or Canada Post and I noticed, especially in the U.S., that usps is sort of snail mail! Sorry to say that, but the items I shipped to the U.S. always arrive within two or three days in the U.S. But then they are sitting at the local customs for up to ten days and usps does not update their website until the mail piece arrived at their main sort facility. Then it takes up to another 5 to 7 days until the item arrives at its final destination in the U.S.
I ship all my items by airmail (which is far more expensive if it is a heavy parcel), rather than (more reasonable) regular mail. Many buyers blame the seller for high shipping fees and prefer to keep shipping fees as low as possible.
If you are located in a country like India etc. you should check with your local Postal Service, as in case of investigation DHL/Deutsche Post will have to contact the foreign Postal Service in written form. This may take several weeks and depends on how fast the Postal Service in the destiation country will check the status and report it back to DHL/Deutsche Post.
Would be interesting to know how long it might take to receive a mail piece IN Germany sent FROM India, Russia or any other overseas country. I purchased a scarf ring in France last summer and it took three weeks to arrive - and that's within Europe!
You should always insist in having your mail piece shipped by airmail (or even "Express"/overnight shipping), even if it is four or five times higher than regular mail. Overnight shipping may cost a fortune (e.g. to the U.S. approx. 300) but it's worth it.
Sorry for my lengthy post.
