Dealing with Others when Wearing Jewelry

I didn't actually think about adding this...My parents are actually the harshest critics. When my rings were stolen two years ago, my mom pushed so hard for me to not replace it. When I did she had a cow. We both decided that if we didn't do it then we never would.

My dad is still on my account, from college, and I haven't removed him just because it's an epic pain, my husband doesn't care. But my mom can see whats going on in there when she logs in online to their account, since they're linked. When she saw how much we wired for this new one, it was like the world ended. I waste my money in her eyes, doesn't matter what it is. I can buy a pack of gum and she's giving me crap.

...I think Im going to remove them tonight. lol

YES! all the time, I have people ask me is that a diamond? a certain designer? how much was it?

I have even had girls try to take a ring off my finger to try it on!!

it's so awkward, it always happens in social situations and others tend to stare.

I usually handle it by just saying yes its made of this, I avoid the price issue and depending on where we are and how well I know them sometimes I let them try my jewellery on:shame:

ooops. I always ask my MIL if I may try her rings ... I hope I don't offend her.

noo thats different, these are girls are parties and they basically take my hand and start sliding my ring off my finger. so they don't even ask!!

I even had one person take the ring put it on her hand walk across the room to show her BF. I had to go over and ask for my jewellery back:nogood:

with my close friends and family, if they like something of mine I willingly take my jewellery off with no hesitation to let my sister or friend try it out!

^I think it is ok if it your MIL and she knows you are trying it on for admiratin purposes.

My mom always like me to try on her jewelry because she says she likes to see what it looks like on someone else!

Interesting thread! I don't get bothered too much by strangers other than the "thats pretty" but I get bothered by friends alot! I get the guilt trip of how they wish they had such and such but they have no money! Meanwhile they are stopping at Starbucks and restaurants 2 times a day! I did have a girl in one of my college classes ask if my wedding set was real and I was baffled, I was newly married and couldn't imagine why some one would assume I had fake rings. I wouldn't dream of asking how much something was, a quick " I love_ or thats pretty" is it for me.

I like to play with my moms jewelry. She has a massive solitaire that is flawless and I always ask to see it or borrow it, usually I cant get it past the living room! She hardly ever wears it but promises that I can have it someday far far away. haha

I don't know if anyone has ever tried to pull mine off to try on. I only let one person try it on, over carpet and not near anything it could whack off of if it were dropped. I don't even like jewelers handling it in my presence. I just cannot watch how cavalierly they hold my items.

I've shown interest in others jewelry, but only because I love it so much and I used to work in the industry. People have shown interest in mine too, and I have no issue with answering their questions providing a) I was working at the time, safe with a bunch of cameras and security staff! or b) they're friends and family.
It's only natural that some people are curious. The only time I've gotten pissed off is when a stranger has asked to try my jewelry on. Yeah.....ok, do I really look that gullible?!

I have some standard responses. When people comment on the size of my ER, I say "yeah, but he made me wait a million years for it!". Someone asked how much my Love was and I just said "Ugh, I don't want to say, I'll be embarrassed". The thing I'm struggling with right now is that my 5 year old likes to show off my stuff, probably because she knows how much I love it, but it's kind of embarassing when she shoves my wrist at someone and says "My Mommy has a REAL GOLD BRACELET."

^aww, that's adorably embarassing. I recall my little cousin being told by her mother to never show off what they own.

Usually I say my pieces came from eBay or second hand. Sometimes that's true, sometimes it's not, but it stops the questions.

one time I went to a new goldsmith to get a quote on a spinel ring I was making, he took my gemstone literally threw it on the counter, took the various gold settings I was choosing and threw those on the counter as well....I was like:wtf: I started examining my spinel and the goldsmith was just like "don't worry it's hard enough it wont break" spinel's are hard but still only like an 8 on the MOH.....it didn't choose him to set my gemstone!!!

I don't really own that much fine jewelry, mostly costume and chunky statement pieces.

My YSL arty ring gets lots of attention and most of my girlfriends have asked (and gotten) to try it on at this point. I don't mind, but there's always that funny moment after they put it on their fingers and realize it might be stuck.

Strangely enough, it's my not-that-expensive-or-glamourous Bulova watch that gets the most comments. I get compliments and questions on cost from co-workers, people in elevators, random family friends. And people always want to try it on!! It's a pretty watch, I'm just surprised some people I know with super fancy watches find mine desirable.

Good call. Random OT: I went to a random jeweler near me to get my gold chain extended. He gets to work at the counter trying to balance the awl on the hard counter top glass and failing miserably because the awl handle keeps sliding around. This goes on for 2 minutes as he's desperately trying to get the links apart. I finally tell him that he should put something soft under the awl handle, and the man looks at me like I'm a genius. *facepalm* He gets a padded jewelry roll and the job is done in 30 seconds.
