As some of you know I have been in the process of building my own loft closet. When we downsized 3 years ago I didn't spend a lot of time on TPF and consequently didn't need as much closet space as I do now. We have spent the last 3 years remodeling our home no room has been left untouched. Now for the final renovation creating a loft closet over our master bath.

I started thinking of this project over a year ago. I knew that the space above the master bath could be put to good use. I started the actual planning with my contractor the end of February and the project began the first week of March. It has been a long haul and we aren't finished yet but I see light at the end of the tunnel.

I am going to share the process of this creation as well as the final results during the next few weeks. This is the space that I started with. I have in essence created a room addition. We closed in this area and added lighting to the bathroom, took out the windows, moved walls, added hardwood floors, lots of lighting and a spiral staircase to access the loft area.

Here is the sub-floor going down and the drywall going up. During this time we have lived with our home being torn apart. At times I really questioned whether it was worth it. As we near the end I can see that it will be in the end.

The bedroom had to be repainted which was fine with me. It took 2.5 months for the stairs to come in.

The stairs are still not quite finished but they have been worth the wait. They really are beautiful. I never thought that I would ever look at stairs and think that but I do.

I got a lot of inspiration from some of the ladies here who have posted pictures of their closets. I knew that I wanted an island and though there wasn't a lot of room I had a small one made. I was able to find remnants and that saved a lot of money.

The back wall in the 3rd picture is where I have added a Murpy Bed. I know that it may seem strange but it is nice to have a spare bed for those nights when you have a cold or whatever.

I had both windows taken out to maximize my area of cabinet space. I went with custom cabinets and there have been issues with that. Once they are resanded and painted again I think I will be glad that I went that route. I chose glass doors for all my cabinets because I want to be able to see what I have in the cabinet. I also have 2 curious cats that need to stay away from my clothing. I found a nice chandelier on line and it fits the space perfectly. I choose glass knobs for the cabinets in an amber color.

Love them
Meg... Keep posting pics... ESP whats going inside those closets!!!
Thanks Amacasa, I am hoping to get to get to the putting my shoes, bags, clothing and Moto jackets up there in the next couple of weeks. I have had issues with some of the cabinetry. Some had to be redone because the cabinet maker didn't come back after the contractor put in the recessed lighting. The cabinets then didn't match up, had to be redone and the paint job was horrible because he then got behind and tried to rush. Now I have a different guy coming in to sand and spray but he can't start till next Friday. That is going to be a 3 day process. Believe me I am ready. I have been shopping in anticipation of the day. That day has taken longer than even I anticipated and now my closet runneth over, lol.

Here are more pictures of the cabinetry. I tried to make sure that I had enough display cabinets for my handbags and shoes. Unfortunately with the Murphy Bed I lost a wall that was to be dedicated to handbags. Also I had to get rid of my dresser in the bedroom to accommodate the stairs. Everything had to be rearranged. I think that I have made use of every available area of the closet. The last picture with the cats is my new jewelry storage area. It is also no complete. When the rest of the closet is done my jeweler is going to have his guy come out and design inserts for the space. The front of this cabinet is full length mirror.

This is a great thread. I can't wait to see the finished product, and I love that you're sharing the journey.
Thanks Creighbaby, I thought that it would be really helpful for anyone wanting to take on this project. It is great to see the finished result but it is also nice to know what you can expect along the way. It has been really stressful at times.

i am so happy for you OP. great closet!!
i am as excited as your cats. they are so adorable.
they probably think, this is their new playroom...

Thanks June. I told you I would start the thread I just thought it would have been a lot sooner. Oh well hopefully just a few more weeks.

The cats love the closet! They love the stairs and do indeed think it is their room. Sam the tortie spent the first few nights trying to get into the cabinets. The banging was mind numbing. Now they have taken to chasing each other up and down the steps in the middle of the night. My 2 dogs have shown no interest so far and that is a good thing since it is a long way down and I don't think the stairs would be easy for them to navigate.

I love how it is coming along, it is great seeing the beginning to completion - I can wait to see how it looks with it filled up with your clothing and bags.

Thanks again for posting this thread.
