Confusion Over Etienne Aigner

I have three Etienne Aigner handbags, one vintage, which is really lovely and DIGNIFIED, the other two were more recent purchases made online and I was really disappointed with the new ones' quality. If you plan on buying EA, just go for vintage ones, don't buy new. The older ones are better made.

I had no idea about Etienne Aigner, haven't heard of the brand very much. I was given a never worn pair of 80's/90's Etienne Aigner burgendy loafer heels by my mom. It is very elegant and understated, but I'm happy I now know about the "oxblood" color significance. Should pull it out of the closet and wear it out one day :)

The 50's-70's were the glory days for Aigner, so sad as I still have some oldies packed away, they wear like iron. I believe things took a downhill slide when Etienne died. He started out in the business making belts for Dior. Another company bought the name and started to make things cheaply. Let's face it, I remember being in high school and and all leather Aigner bag cost $25 , and that was alot of money then. You couldn't make that quality now without charging big bucks.Check out AignerMunich website. Their bags are lovely and compete with Celine and such in Germany.

They are VERY different. Aigner used to be very nice in the states (back in the mid-1970s). They are not anymore. German Aigner bags are MUCH nicer. No comparison whatsoever.

They are not even sister company?

In Jakarta, we never have Etienne Aigner, but Aigner bags are quite expensive. Last year, I was checking on their wallet, and it cost around US$500

You must have the German bags then. In the US you can pick up an Aigner bag for $80 No, the German and US are not sister companies, 2 entirely different entities. I have heard AignerMunich is very high end.

It actually is a ‘tale of two cities’ with Etienne Aigner. The designer was from Hungary and born in 1904. He introduced his first handbag collection in New York in 1950.

Atienne Aigner met Heiner H. Rankle, a businessman from Germany and a ‘new’ trendier brand of Aigner was launched in 1965 in Munich, Germany. So in essence it is the same company but two different divisions of one based in Germany and the other in the US. The company for their German division utilizes materials and craftsmanship from Italy.

Thank you for the information! It really helps. Aigner in Germany have very great bags. They are just so well-made.

Aigner Munich is also Etienne Aigner but it is a high brand designer brand that is still coveted in the world today. The logo for Aigner Munich is the horse-shoe A logo and Etienne Aigner doesn't have a logo but just words "Etienne Aigner". Two different companies with different aesthetics. Cannot compare!

so, is etiene aigner bag not aigner munich bag that has logo A. Right? In america, etiene aigner is cheap, in germany it is aigner munich with logo A which is expensive and high end brand, right? Because they have same name 'aigner', i become confused. I almost buy and cancell it! So that is why i ask you all here. Is it good brand still now?

Hi, I moved your post to an older thread. There's a great explanation here on page 1.

:smile1:

As renza mentioned before, Etienne Aigner has revamped the lines. So I think US version has become more like what we've seen in Europe? I've never seen their bags in Europe so I'm just guessing.

Price point is very much like Coach or mid range designer brands.
Looks like they use Italian leather but the construction is done in China.
Nowadays less and less handbags with this price range (about $500) are made in Italy.
