Coach ? Yay or Nay

I can understand your concerns. But if you already have premium designer bags already, mixing coach with them would be fine. It's not like you're buying coach because you can only afford coach, you're buying it because you like the style, I think that makes a difference.

I agree, crazyforcoach! :dothewave:

Personal preference outweighs any other consideration when choosing a bag. :hbeat:

Coach is far too often unjustly slammed for some of their lesser successes while luxury designer brands‘ godawful miscues are shuffled into the “limited edition” archives by their apologists.

As far as I’m concerned, it was a Coach that carried Cinderella to the ball. And we all know how that turned out! :queen:

Because you can only afford coach is elitist and is saying more about you than someone wearing a bag from whatever brand it might be.

People with a mindset like this is why OP is questioning wearing a bag she likes.

I was once carrying a dinky while going for a walk in my neighborhood. Neighbor across the street from me said she loved my bag and wanted to know who made it. The moment I told her Coach she scoffed and said she would never carry Coach. I can't imagine what people think of themselves to be able to respond like that to another person.
Odd, she liked it enough to ask about it.

I know how I would’ve responded, AstridRhapsody.

When she said she would never carry a Coach, I would’ve given her a pitying smile and said, “That’s all right, dear. I’m sure you might be able to afford one someday.”

I'm going to weigh in because both Coach and I have been around a while! (Coach is a lot older, LOL.) I can remember when fresh out of graduate school, I purchased a cheap knockoff. I knew nothing of Coach at the time; I was just drawn to the understated flap bag with a turnlock. It was after the fact that I discovered Coach and had to a long time before I justify paying such a large sum for a bag. And I was hooked. I sold many on ebay also. That was the Coach for "women of a certain age" and decidedly middle-class aspirational luxury. Then enter the Cs logo. After that, Coach really changed. It was made in Asia and became ubiquitous. Somewhere along the line, it fell out of favor for many. There were changes in designers, marketing, etc. People were migrating to LV. It's only within the past few years that Coach has reemerged. There was a certain time when you would have asked yourself if you wanted to purchase and ask that Yay or Nay question.
The Cassie is a classic bag that's great for those of all ages. It's timeless. No worries about vachetta or cracked canvas. When compared against the price tag of the Metis, it's worth a look at least. I wish they'd done it in smooth leather, but I still love the bag. As for LV, I think I came close to owning 25 to 30 pieces. Except for two pieces, I don't have that collection any more for different reason. Good reasons. It was at this time that I also discovered it was pointless to purchase anything to impress people who probably wouldn't give much thought to me. It's when the toughest times hit that you find who your true "friends" are. I learned not base certain choices on what other people like. If I'm stuck and I ask an opinion, it will validate what I already know. If you are really drawn to a bag of any brand, then try it. Make sure you can return it.
In the end, it's all stuff.and it ages. Just like us! Life's too short to worry about what people think of your bag choices.

I think this is a very interesting discussion and it’s fun to read everybody's perception of the brand so I though I would share mine:

I really love what Coach is doing lately, design wise. Personally I think it goes very well with my personal style. I love how most Coach bags are understated while timelessly classy. Personally I’m not very interested in the monogram C pattern or large “C” logos. There is something rustic, naturalistic about the current Coach design. I love the embroidery and weave of the latest collection, and I love how the colors they have chosen are colors easily found in nature (I’m not a hot pink girl).

For reference I’m in my late 20s and live in Tokyo. Here vintage Coach is super popular and we import a lot of vintage bags from Europe and North America.

Personally I would choose Coach over many higher end brands, mainly for the aesthetic. Chanel is to feminine and frilly/heavily detailed (because of the many chains) for my taste, LV too “rich looking” with all the logos. The Italian brands like Gucci and Versace is often too sexy and edgy. I do generally tend to like the Spanish designers better, maybe because it’s more natural and earthy looking, like Loweve. While the Hermes Birkin and Kelly is a bit to severe for me, I do love a small Picotin. I also really enjoy the newer printed fabric Lady Dior that have been released the last seasons, but I wish there was a version without the bling-bling Dior charm (it’s just a bit too much for me).

In general I just tend to enjoy vegetable tan leather, unglazed edges (which I don’t think Coach do anymore), lining with natrual looking canvas rather then logo patterned nylon, cute soft shapes, happy but muted colors (like a rich caramel, a soft muted pink, or the greens and blues from Coach current collection). I try to support smaller leather artisans in my area, because I want to support the local economy, but also because I really love the look of many Japanese designers.

So to summarise I really enjoy the aesthetic of Coach, and even if it might not be as prestige as some other brands, I also would never want to spend my money on something I don’t love (especially not for designer bag prices!). I would personally want to invest that money into something that gave me more pleasure.

It feels like everybody already had a variation of "you do you, boo" but the best thing is to go with your gut. In some circles a Coach bag won't do. In other circles it is even priced out of their range. Some people don't care what other people might think, while others do.

We can give you all the advice in the world, but we won't feel what you feel. You don't need to wear it. If you love the bag but are afraid of your friends, wear it to the grocerystore. Nothing wrong with thinking before you buy, but there is no need for you to be uncomfortable because of a accessorie.

This. Totally agree- it's as much you do you as you do what's comfortable for you now. Used to wear designers like armor... now that I'm old, grumpy, tough-skinned... sometimes I'll use an ikea bag as a tote.
As for quality - coach and hermes are my favorites and all that's left on my shelves. Besides ikea bags.

The best suggestion is here!
