Coach vs. Louis Vuitton

It's only worth it if you think it's worth it! I bought my first LV last year and love it! Well, I actually started with the Galliera, returned it, bought the Damier Hampstead MM a few months ago and have used it almost exclusively since. I regret returning my Galliera and will hopefully get one within the year.
I have a bunch of Coach bags (my first love) but just haven't been happy with the styles lately. I love the Damier pattern- I vote you should get the Speedy

I own several bags from both brands, but honestly, I think it all boils down to what you like, regardless of brand name. As for durability/wear, both brands hold up pretty well, but I would say Coach is indestructible :smile1:

I have bought Coach for years. Last year I wanted an LV so bad...couldn't shake it. I first bought a Speedy 35, then a few months later bought a Neverfull GM. Both are monogram. I love them both...but for some reason I carry my Coach handbags mainly. I know several girls that did what I did and sold them on ebay to buy a Coach or other bag. I won't sell mine...they do hold their value and the prices continue to increase, which makes mine worth at least what I paid for them. It does irritate me that LV holds its value and Coach doesn't. I try to stick with the higher end Coach that I continue to enjoy carrying and I don't see as many people carrying them. I would buy the damier canvas if I was buying another one. Good luck.

That's exactly what I"m looking at. I'm looking at the Damier Azur Speedy 30 in probably the Ebony. I don't like the Monogram stuff, but I do like this. I just wanted to know if it's worth the investment. Coach has my heart still too, I just want to own ONE LV in my life.

Thanks for bringing up this topic jlbanks! Good discussion!

Since I don't live anywhere near a store that carries LV....for those of you that have one, what gets your vote for an "all-around" favorite? I know that the Speedy is mentioned so often, but I'm not sure that I could give up the shoulder carry option that my Sabrina & Julianne provide. But does the Neverfull have thin straps that dig into your shoulder? And I know that the Hampstead has the gold plate on the front, but what makes it so different from the Neverfull to add a few hundred $$ to the price tag?

Thanks gals...(sorry jl-not trying to hijack your thread;))

Scorpio, definitely try the bags on for fit, style, and comfort at your local LV store. Which bag style(s) are you considering?
I am looking at the Galleria and the Neverfull. I definitely want a shoulder bag. The only store near me is about 3.5 hours away. We are going to make a trip in March or April so I can pick one out! YAY!

One thing I really don't like is the Speedy has one LITTLE pocket. The Neverfull has one LARGE pocket. But, basically, not all those wonderful pockets we're used to with Coach! I'll probably buy a cellphone carrier that matches my LV's...but $325 is hard to swallow! I wouldn't order it if you can get to a store...you need to look them over, try them on, etc.

The Neverfull has the thinner straps and you can't beat the price, especially compared to that of the Galliera. However, my pick would be the Galliera due to the strap length, style, and comfort. It's truly a great shoulder bag and it's quite roomy, including the PM size. I've got the Galliera on my wish list as well.

Thanks! The Galleria PM was my first choice. I then started looking at the Neverfull. There is a big price difference. I will probably only get one LV, so I am going to try and make it something classic, that I will have/use forever.

This thread is so interesting to me as I grew up with Coach (I'm 42 and got my first one at age 12), then became an LV girl. And I just bought my first Coach bags after well over 12 years.

LV versus Coach, like many others have noted, is entirely a personal choice. LV has the history and quite a bit of panache but it's also heavily copied which lessens the brand a bit.

I've had several Speedys--all epi. The mono canvas speedy can be a bit droopy. Speedies are definitely hand carry. The Alma is still my favorite style.

But I digress.

The Galliera rocks!!!!! I have Hermes, LV, Balenciaga, Miu Miu, Marc Jacobs and some others and the Galliera ( I have the PM) is my absolute favorite. Worth every penny!!!

If you are interested, check out the second hand market on e-bay. The ladies in the LV group can certainly help you authenticate.

I agree.
I'm getting ready for my first LV purchase and although I love my COACH stuff, I'm branching out. I might buy an RM, too.

This latest stuff from COACH has made it "easy" to go elsewhere. :)

I only have time to skim the first page of the replies, but from what I've read so far, they're spot-on. Coach is more like "affordable luxury" (a term coined by Coach for themselves), while LV is in the upper echelons of the luxury heirarchy.

Personally, I love LV more than Coach, so I totally think the price is worth it. I do get irritated that they keep raising the price a few times a year, but I theorize they do this to keep the brand's status as high as it is. LV craftsmanship and quality hasn't been as strong currently as in the past, but I still stand by it. Just go on eBay and you can see auctions for Speedys that are 15, 20, 30 years old.

Another reason I adore LV is for its timeless style, as I think of some of their classic styles (ex. Keepall, Speedy, Papillon, etc) are like pieces of art and well constructed. Like someone else said, it's heavily copied, but I'd rather have the original. Honestly, I didn't see what all the fuss was about first, but then I went into the store and tried some items, and I was hooked.

Another reason I love LV is how well they retain their value. LV never goes on sale, EVER, so I think that has a lot to do with it. I think of my purses as investments, that I'll either 1.) get a lot of use out of, or 2.) will fetch me some money if I was ever in a dire situtation that I needed some cash fast =P

I finally bought my first (and only) LV Speedy Damier Ebene Speedy 30 (the dark brown square pattern) a year and a half ago, and I totally baby her more than any of my other bags, even though she's meant to take alot. She can jazz up a simple, casual outfit like a white t-shirt and jeans like no other. What I like most about her, is how elegant the dark brown is, and being a neutral, it goes with everything, even black.

As some of the others suggested, if you're not into the idea of your light, khaki-colored leather handles turning dark from use, I'd look into the Damier Ebene line, because the leather is dark brown and coated, so it'll look as good as the day you bought it for years to come!

On a side note about shoulder vs. hand-bag, I was scared about getting the Speedy as my first LV AND hand-bag, but I am still happy with my choice! I am usually a shoulder-bag girl, but I use my Speedy when I'm going out for dinner, relaxing (and don't have to worry about having to carry a bag on my arm for awhile), or dressing up (ex. Sunday church). There are ladies in the tPF LV forum that use their Speedys all the time, even with kids!

So if you're confused as to which bag to get, go to the store and try on all the bags to your heart's content. Hopefully the customer service at your local LV store will be good, but sometime's it's not (unfortunately). I would defintely look at the classics like the Speedy, Papillon, Noe, etc (there are more, but I can't remember right now). Out of those three that I mentioned, the Speedy would be my #1 choice. If you're looking more for a shoulder-bag, the Galliera is a good choice. Many ladies here have it, and seem to love it. Someone mentioned the Neverfull, which is a good tote, but personally, I don't like how there's no zip-closure, (or something more secure than a clip).

The bottom line is that it's your choice to buy one, but only if you LVOE it, and not because it's a "status item." It's like finding a man - when it's THE ONE, you just know. Good luck, and let us know how it goes!

I ordered a great Speedy organizer / shaper from eBay, since I HATE saggy Speedys. The organizer I got keeps my Speedy 30 in shape, and has pockets (5) on the sides.
